there seems to be several symptoms and they are random, but occur often.
drive unresponsive (disk in or not in) it may make sounds of the drive moving. if this occurs while a disk is being inserted , it will take the disk in little then stop then take the disk in more and more every 1/2 sec or so.
also if a game is started while this is happening (wiiware or vc game) a message will appear that you need to eject the disk and reboot the system even with no disk in the drive.
the system is v3.3, the mod chip has been updated via a 1.5 disk and had this problem before the 1.5 update.
could this mean that i need to run a wire to J and remove the clk? also another thing to note is this behavior goes away without the chip

get a programmer and update the d2pro9 firmware, problem solved
didineedthis
Thankyou didineedthis, i didn't realize that the alternative firmware would solve my issue.
i had thought that since i updated to firmware 1.5 that it would not affect me, but now i realize that the update is for hardware version 2.0 (the upgrade disk states that it is hw version 2.0)
also, is a D2pro9 for D2E (some places call it D2pro9 V3) the same as a D2pro9 v2 with 2.1 firmware?
thanks again, your always very prompt and helpful.

no the d2e has its own firmware, D2e will not work on d2c wiis, d2pro broke the code trying to ram all the firmware on 1 chip, it will work on d2c2 drives though.

I just bought a D2Pro9 V3 chip and installed it on a D2C2 Wii with a Chip Clip. About 50% of the time the drive will start clipping (about ten times) then go to the "eject and restart" black screen. I have a few questions.
I have the J jumper soldered and w/ the CLK closed I get nothing. After a reboot the game will start fine. I've tried TDK, Memorex and other media and it seems to be that way with all of them. I have a D2B modded Wii and these games play flawlessly.
What version of the Firmware is on the V3 chip when shipped?
D2Pro's website says that with a firmware update these "clipping" issues and "drive" issues are fixed. I'm thinking that these V3 chips will still need a new Firmware?!?!?!
D2Pro's website is missleading making me think that the new firmware is shipped on the V3 chip. The fact that the drive works most of the time is strange. I would think that if the install was bad that I wouldn't get a drive to spin at all. Sorry for the length post but this seems weird to me. I have modded 20+ Wii's and this new chip is giving me headaches...
*EDIT*
*This is a solution for a D2E Wii, while using a D2Pro9 V3 "blue sticker" 2.3 chip*
D2E with D2Pro9 V3 "BLUE STICKER" - If you are getting the solid red light AND the drive spins, you will want to solder the J to J connections and NOT jumper the CLK (on the Chip-Clip). I'm my case I'm using a V4C-9 chip-clip and the D2Pro9 V3 "Blue Sticker" (used D2Prog to verify 2.3 D2E firmware). I have everything else connected and NOT the J connection on top of the chip clip. DO NOT bridge the CLK with the D2E. Use the small red wire that comes with the chip clip, you don't need anything longer than 3" or whatever comes with the clip (this chip-clip comes with only one wire). NO ISSUES after this!! Use the latest Updater DVD from the D2Pro9.com website to bump the version after you get the games to run... :)

burn the 1.5 utility disc (http://www.d2pro.com/resources.html) and pop it in ur wii , it will tell you what firmware is on ur chip

How do I burn the latest software version 2.3 to disk and then load it on the Wii?

there are 2 firmware locations on the chip, there is the spi, that can be updated via an update dvd(v1.6). the second firmware location is the hw version. this is the firmware that can only be upgraded via a programmer.
the programmer is the only method to flash the chip and fix the issue people are having where the drive either gets stuck and wont eject with a disk in it or where it sucks the disk in little by little then wont eject.

get yourself a programmer then get the 2.3 firmware from here (http://www.d2pro.com/resources.html) reprogram your chip, problem solved.

By doing the J wire jumper I no longer have an issue with the inching problem never did have a problem with ejecting a disk. So what can the programmer offer to me at this point? I upgraded the v1.6 Utility Disc from V1.5 and the firmware indicated it was 2.3 with the utility disc. If it was updated with the Utility disc I don't know but but I do know it changed my utility version from 1.5 to 1.6 and after doing so I noticed at the top of the screen Firmware 2.3.
Everything is working fine for me now after the J wire mod and Utility upgrade.

no need to do anything else ,you have 2.3 firmware and you have updated the spi to 1.6 ,that's you sorted.

I have the d2prog and a d2Pro9 V3 chip. If you have a D2C wii and you slap the D2Pro9V3 chip on and it starts to make repeating drive noises as soon as you turn on your wii you have a D2C2 Wii and you'll need to do the following.
What I mean by repeating drive noise would be: the drive makes a grunt noise for 1/2 a second then stops sharp then repeats over and over again.
First off, the V3 chip has the D2E firmware on it. You'll need the D2Prog and the firmware located here: Link (http://www.d2pro.com/downloads/fw/d2pro9_winxp_i386_v2.3.tar.gz)
You'll have to grab the drivers for the d2Programmer and use this firmware. The ribbon cable needs to go "blue side down" or you won't see any lights on the chip (should be solid red) run the utility from a command line don't just double click it from the desktop. You're going to remove the D2E functionality from the mod chip when you do this firmware update so make sure you have a D2C chip on your wii and not a D2E. Once the flash is done the chip will work like a champ.

See my other post below about the D2E Solution. This is the only time I have found needing to remove clk and jumper J from the chip. Anyways... read on.
jonxy... I'm guessing you have a D2Pro9 V3... (Blue Sticker)?? Lot's of factors here we need to process...
If you do, then I have had luck doing the following:
1. Downgrade the chip from the D2E code to the older code using the D2Prog and the firmware from D2Pro9.com. (Or get a Wasabi V3) :)
2. Using a chip-clip solder all points including the clk.
3. You shouldn't need any extra wires, just the clip and the chip.
If you're still having issues, there are other threads that have a, try this or try that opinion.. I bought about 15 D2Pro9 V3 chips and have successfully installed them on D2C2's, D2E's and D2C Wii's. My solution below for the D2Pro9 V3's on a D2E works everytime (NTSC Wil's). I've found Wasabi V2's and V3's work best for D2C's and D2C2's. It is all a matter of trial and error, but most of the time (as long as you don't have a D2Pro9 V3 *blue sticker* and need to mod a D2C2, thus needing the D2Prog which cost extra) everything is very straight forward. Have plenty of solder removal rope and lots of time/patients and you can get it to work. Here is a Warning, you CAN de-solder the pads off of these chips, making them worthless...
