Everyone's favorite gaming analyst Michael Pachter has commented that MS is legitimately concerned by Sony gaining traction on them. He says they worry that every PS3 sold is a lost opportunity and MS is feeling the heat from the PS3 more than ever.

Microsoft may be feeling the heat from the PlayStation 3, which has seen sales improve after a slow start, according to Pachter. While the Xbox 360 retains a much larger installed base, the PS3 has managed to outsell the 360 in the U.S. market so far in 2008.
“I think Microsoft is legitimately concerned about Sony getting traction on them. They worry that every PS3 sold is a lost opportunity,” Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities told MarketWatch.

No, but they want you to buy your 2nd or 3rd replacement XBox 360 instead of a new PS3. :P

A year ago I was the only one I knew locally that had a PS3, now I know lots of people with them, but all of them are people that had 360's or Wii's first. I really dont know anyone who didnt have a console who has bought either the 360 or PS3 over the past year or so, not sure if its the economy or if the price is still to high for the casual gamer but around here neither of them are exactly flying off the shelves. Most of the part time gamers I know are still content with the PS2 or have bought a Wii and keep asking me when games im playing are coming to their console...

MS charging money for xbox live is whats gonna kill the 360. even if you have both consoles why would you buy a game like gta on 360 and pay for live when you can buy it for ps3 and play online for free. this is why they are so worried. it wouldn't make any sense to pay for live when most of your friends that you would to play with are on the sony network for free. besides the red rings the 360 is a better console, but if ms wants stay in this game they better drop the price to about $200 or make live free. they need to choose one. They cant have the cake and eat it too.

Stop complaining about You have to pay for Live blah blah blah, if you find 60 euro a year (5 Euro a month) to expensive you better stop playing games the energy cost it takes to let you TV and game console play is match higher then 5 euro a month.
I own WII, 360 and PS3 they all have there good and bad things, I like Live more then PSN to play games online and all my fiends whit a 360 pay for live aswel and they not complaining neater. So stop using that stupid excuse from Live is expensive, you have to pay for the services they are giving, something you have to do for allot off things these days, not only for Live. I don't care what console will win the "War" I just wane play the games I like to play on what ever console they are on.

Edit: most off the ppl I know have a PS3 and a 360.

If you look at the current ps2 user base and take it chances are alot of them will upgrade to the ps3 when price and content is right then he is right.

The 360 had a year to a year and a half (in Europe) to aim games at the ps2 audience but still very little is available to the more casual audience and younger audience. So on those thoughts an opportunity has been lost.

I bought a 360 as I got sick of waiting for ps3 release but play it very little now even though its flashed. I wonder how many did the same and now have ps3's aswell or like a few of my mates just where more patient for ps3 release as ps2 releases have still been there to support the wait.

There are allot off kids whit a PS2 it has allot off kids games, and its really cheap thats the reason why it sold good, you think a parent wil buy a game console for there kids that costs 399 euro, and cant play any ps2 games they have? so they need to buy new games aswel, and there aren't many kids games on PS3 just like on the 360.

You are right the ps3 doesn't cater for those who bought a ps2 yet but it didn't have a years head start and is not so close to mass adoption price as the 360 but is still gaining on it. So still even from what you have said Microsoft has missed on an opportunity to steal Sony's customer base.

You do know you don't have to trade in your PS2 to own a PS3 right? It's not a rule or anything. If you want to play a PS2 game, get out your PS2. I don't see what the big deal is, that's how it always used to be. Can't play 64 games on the Gamecube, the NES on the SNES, etc. People are just getting too spoiled nowadays that any little thing pisses them off. Stop being lazy and just bust out the PS2 whenever you want to play a PS2 game.

M$, I hope the EU and US courts hang you out to dry for what you did to consumers. If there is a lawyer out there, post here to discuss a lawsuit...at this point, I got nothin' to lose! I am sure that there are many people on this forum ready to go to court! M$, can you say CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT? Oh ya, fanboys are not replied to. Trolls are immediately ignored. Now go and say a prayer as you turn on your 360!:D

PSN is going to shock alot of their users when they realize that it is costing them money to run free dedicated servers. Why do you think you have to pay WoW 15+ bucks a month and FFXI 12+ bucks a month to play? Its because it cost money to run these servers and keep them managed which cost ITs in order to do so. When Sony realizes that they are getting heavy traffic and it is causing people online games to freeze and jitter 80% of the time they will have to reconsider. Everyone remembers NetZero the free internet dial up service with unlimited internet access right? Oh after everone was sick of paying for AOL and Earthlink or what ISP they had they all jumped onto the free Netzero internet. Then Netzero started giving you a 30 min popup that would disconnect you if you didnt click OK to continue and then they capped you from unlimited to 10 hours a month. Why because with more people joining the server mains more money to keep them up for free. Its all a matter of time and this PSN for free stuff will not be the matter. And by no means am I a Xbox360 fan boy for I own every 2nd gen system sense Dreamcast to a PS3 so Im not taking sides this is just a matter of cause and effect.

I am a 360 fanboy too, I'm not taking sides either, and i hear what you are saying, but by the time sony does start charging for the network the damage will already be done to microsoft business wise. For all we know this is probably sony's strategy for killing 360, they probably already realized what you are saying. another possibilty is that the advertising dollars would maintain the network itself. while sony concentrate on the profits from the console itself. I mean think about this; it cost money to run a local television station right, yet for over 3 decades we have been getting it for free. another way to look at is that live is nothing more than a website that generates alot of traffic like google. and we don't pay for google.

Local TV is a proven commodity and can survive off of ad revenue or in the case of channels like PBS through donations and government subsidies. Online gaming and the Internet in general are still in their infancy as far as advertising value is concerned. Television is a great example of how most dont want to see games become. Here in the US there is an average of 12 minutes of advertising per hour of programming. A banner here and there isnt going to pay the bills in the long run especially if there is not a noticable return on their presence. It looks like what is shaking down now will end up similar to TCM and HBO, both have their own audience, and both are sucessful one has commercials and is free with most cable packages the other is commercial free but costs extra. Its all a matter of which is more appealing, plenty of room for both.

what is with you children thinking that dreamcasts/ps2's/etc are 2ND GEN SYSTEMS!!!.....NO NO NO NO

The 2nd generation was the Atari 2600/Intellivision/Colecovision/Oddysey generation!!! i'm willing to bet most of you kids weren't even born then.

i will repeat what i said in a thread the other day :

VIDEOGAMING DID NOT START WITH THE PLAYSTATION!!!!! THE PLAYSTATION IS NOT 1ST GEN IN ANY SENSE AT ALL!!!

now back on topic. you guys do know that malloc/zeus just use this analyst michael pachter's lame "stating the obvious" quotes to goad you all into a fanboy flame war right?

as far as the live vs psn pricing comments go, i too agree that psn cant sustain a free service forever. maybe once more people own a ps3 and theres some highly played online games on the ps3 there will be a need for a pricing structure to handle their resources. i just hope that they dont do it the backwards way m$ has gone about it. i think that the online play should be free (but time limited to 3-5 hours a week) but you pay for extra services like voice chat/video chat/DLC/access to demos (time limited, gold gets demos 1 month before silver customers get access), if u require more time or the extra services then you pay for the premium account. atm, m$ has it backwards and let you access everything for free...but cant play online. so those on silver dont even know what theyre missing. offering a time-based free online service would allow people to try-before-they-buy and potentially increase the player base (it worked for MMO's).
