View Full Version : £500 million for Xbox 360 Elite Red Ring of Death
Fresh reports indicate that MS are facing a massive £500 million repair bill after a large amount of their Xbox Elite units were hit by the well known Red Ring of Death. The Elite systems were thought to be immune from the RRoD but now there are many angry owners sending back their expensive systems for repair.
Computer giants Microsoft are facing a £500million repair bill after their Xbox Elite consoles were hit by the notorious "red ring of death".
The console was originally thought to be immune from the problem, which permanently freezes the unit after a ring of green lights on the power control button turn red.
Now, hundreds of angry owners are sending back their £290 consoles, which are being shipped to Germany for repair. But the fault remains a mystery. Jamie King, 16, from Gomshall, Surrey, said: "I got my Xbox in September and it packed up eight months later in June.
"First, it kept freezing, then it developed the red ring of death."
In a statement, Microsoft simply said: "The majority of Xbox 360 owners enjoy a great experience with their console.
"Anyone with a problem should call Xbox customer service."
Last year, the company had to recall 230,000 Xbox steering wheels worldwide after complaints that they overheated.

its the mirror look at the link, this is them so late haha.
Last year, the company had to recall 230,000 Xbox steering wheels worldwide after complaints that they overheated.
And it spent £500million recalling power cords supplied with units made before 2003 after 300 caught fire and burnt seven gamers. (since when did 300 catch fire and since when was the xbox 1!!! subject to the RROD?, power cords happened to be replaced not recalled and no they didn't work)
12m Xboxes have been sold since 2005
33% Xboxes will overheat say experts (was actually the Gamestop return rate/one third party repair center)
230k steering wheels were recalled in 07 (most happened to be offered replacement parts)
This the the mirror trying to be smart, the £500 million is the $1 billion MS already spent, the elite rrod is how old news?
I suggest using their forum or contact us link to flame them for being around two years late

Only idiots thought that. The decent people left in this world saw the problem everywhere on forums. No offense to the idiots.

Near enough the truth the expected life of a 30 hour a week 360 is one to two years, once the die shrinks happen the problem will go away, i doubt just the cpu shrink will do it.
The best thing a mate ever did was wait for his rrod then sent it in for a third party reball and demanded leaded solder, its been working perfectly inside an entertainment unit since.

My Elite runs great and I don't think it is going to RRoD any time soon. It froze on the Dashboard a few times about 2 months after I got it but not since then.

been using my 360 for well over 2 years, no problems, it's still running fine and has seen many an hour of gaming sessions, sometimes lasting over 8hrs per session(s).
i wouldn't hesitate recommending a 360 to anyone, the game library it offers is outstanding. that being said, i would recommend the ps3 also, as long as they pick up mgs4. with resistance 2 shaping up nicely, that'll help things out also.

Not saying you are lying, But I am the only person I know that has an Elite and everyone else that I know has had RRoD at least once.

Congratulations, you spun the wheel of luck and have a 360 that is working (so far). That that does not detract from the fact that there is an extremely high failure rate or that your 360 could eventually fail as well.

well, sorry but it's the same system i've been using it for over 2 years (april '06) and its never rrod, never. my brother in law has had one for over a year with no problems at all either. both our systems are the pro versions.
i don't understand why people can't believe someone has a 360 that has never had issues?

it's given me over two years of gaming with no issues, not hard to understand. not everyone has had a 360 gone bad. sure the failure rates are high, but even though the wii and ps3 rates are low, what's to say mine won't fail tomorrow? the ps3 and wii aren't infallible either.

Do you use any kind of cool device for your 360?

Every PS3 will die. Every single one. Just a matter of time ;)
Had to say it... sorry :p
At least once you get the xbox repaired, you can use it to play games... the PS3 doesn't need fixing, but you cant do anything with it anyways...
again, sorry, i don't neccisarily belive those statements, just had the urge to say them :)

i used to use the intercooler, but heard so many stories of it killing systems then my started having a loose power connection so i removed it and trash canned it.
other than standing it vertically with open space behind it, with it standing next to my wii and ps3, no cooling device is used.

Cool thx, I guess I don't need a 3rd party cooling device. Maybe I'll just get a small fan and blow on my 360.

I've had mine since launch with no problems, never used a cooling device but I do keep it elevated and out in the open. I dont do many long hour gaming sessions though so that probably has made the difference. I think the longest I have ever played was 10-12 hours when I bought Bioshock...but my wife was so irritated I probably will never do that again :)
