Microsoft Pwned 'BenDoverX' gamer tag - is it right?

After two long years, Microsoft had finally done something about a gamer tag 'BenDoverX'. Is such a tag truly hurtful and have you ever been requested by MS to change your tag?


Last night, the name BenDoverx finally made it into Microsoft’s crosshairs….

As you see from the picture above, I finally had to give up my gamertag after having it for 2 years. I don’t know if my name was reported by someone I played online or, since I deal with the folks at Microsoft through this site, maybe they caught on to my name and I was forced to change it. Or, quite possibly, it was all a mere coincidence. The thing that’s probably the most annoying about having to change my name is I was going to meet a friend to play online. Instead of getting into a game, I had to sit there for 15-20 minutes to come up with a name I could use without getting in trouble again. I decided to go with a variation of my PSN ID. My new Xbox Live gamertag became ‘TheBeebsta’. Yea…very anticlimactic indeed. Going from BenDoverx to ‘TheBeebsta’ is pretty much like riding the craziest rollercoaster at the amusement park, and then having a seat on a bench.

Nevertheless, I’m paying homage today to my lost gamertag. BenDoverx was a name I was damn proud of, even though there have been times that I had to inform a pretty important contact of mine what my gamertag was so we could get a game going. A lot of them were cool with it and gave me the reaction I expected. But there were a couple who have yet to add me since my gamertag was “risque”.

It could have more to do with the fact that Ben Dover is a famous porn Actor / Director / Producer. I find it more amusing that someone at MS would realise who he was unless they were an frequent viewer of these films of the natural form!

I do think this name banning or whatever they call it is seriously getting out of hand.

The ToS mentions any names that may be considered offensive and so on, i cba to go and find the section the live ToS is like 3 full pages of un-litigated bull**** tbh :D

This happend to me a few months ago. I had a gamertag of "TheMadBoobies", after well over a year they made me change it.......M$ is really becoming "gay" about this.:rolleyes:

In my experience listed above, they do not charge you the 800 M$ points or anything if they force you to change it. However it was still a pain in the rear. It wouldnt let me login because of my name, but when i'd go to change it. I'd get an error saying i have to be signed in to use this feature. So i was stuck not signing in. Then when I finally called xbox support i was instructed to go to "recover my gamertag". This took 20-30 mins and as soon as it was done i was told to change my name and then it would work.

So, they dont charge you, but they make you jump through hoops and waste your time in order to change it............

Personally, I don't care...but, you've got to consider what MS is trying to achieve. They want to be a 'family' console. It's not about adults gamers being offended, it's about parents no liking what their kids see on live.

Maybe MS can update the dashboard to include some kind of option to block out these names. That way, if you have the option turned on, you will see something like "Unknown" or "Nameless".
