The producer of the Soul Calibur XBLA port has explained why the game is missing the mission mode and doesn't have online play. Basically, the original game was far larger than the 150MB size limitation and mission mode had to go, secondly there is online play as in many cases this is just added on poorly and ruins the gameplay experience quality.

The producer of the Soul Calibur XBLA port, Robert Johnson, has explained why it's missing the original's mission mode and doesn't have online play.

Despite being a port of the Dreamcast version, its mission mode isn't included in the Xbox Live Arcade version. Johnson explains why.

"We started this project with the full intention of hitting the 150MB size limitation as required by Microsoft," he says. "However, the original game was much larger so we did have to make one major adjustment, and that was to remove the Mission Battle Mode... it wasn't until the end of the project that file size limitations were no longer an issue, but at that point it was too late to put Mission Battle Mode back in."

He also reveals why the decision was made not to include online play for Soul Calibur.

"We wanted to avoid the same pitfalls of other retro fighting games that have been ported to the 360," Johnson explains. "In most cases online play was simply tacked on and the gameplay experience was lessened because of it. We don't want the players' impression of Soul Calibur to be tarnished by the restrictions that would have occurred by including online play in this game, which was never designed for that feature."

I hope they release for the PS3 with online and mission mod just to stick to Microsoft's size limit on XBLA! I know Microsoft is forcing this limit to have simple, easy to pick up game but all it's doing is hurting the game quality.... Hopefully they'll come to their senses at E3.

Are you retarded? Answer: YES. They already removed that limit, did you even bother reading the article? Why do I even ask...

Don't normally point out typos but this makes the article seem strange, *no online play<_-

forget about mission mode the 4:3 kinda kills it for me.
If they cannot be assed to set it for widescreen TV's then i cannot be assed to buy it.

I bought it and completed it with Sophitia in just over 4 minutes without losing a single round and I havent played Soul Calibur in at least 8 years. Its aged terribly now and my method of semi button mashing and rememberence of the special moves as the game went on made it a cakewalk.

It was a complete waste of 800 MS points and I will likely never even look at it again.

And you are right 4:3 in this day in age is a disgrace.

Is it me or developpers at NamcoBandai don't seem able to work their magic without some sort of downfall? Well, the ones working on the Soul Calibur games... as both the XBLA and the PS3 version seems to have some kind of problems.

No Widescreen option, no mission mode, no online play for the XBLA port.
Now I know that there was some limitations to keep the file size down, but I still find that a little bit lazy for a port. I wasn't interested in it because of the lack of 16:9, but no mission mode completely kills it for me.

7Gb install + 2Gb for gamesaves on the PS3 version of Soul Calibur IV...
Taking more or less 9Gb of your HDD space for a freaking fighting game is something I find very scary. Especially if someone has the 20Gb PS3... or even the 40Gb PS3... And 2Gb savefile? Why the hell it takes so much space to save when everything (including your custom characters) in SCIII only took some little space on your 8Mb PS2 memory card?

Now there is also mention of the 360 version of SCIV requiring a HDD too... Hey! We're talking about a fighting game here! Not an MMO! Unless there is some super duper special feature we still don't know about that would make a HDD mandatory, I don't see a reason why it should be. (And the PS3 HDD usage (if those numbers are true) just boggles my mind.)

I have to agree, it's the best Soul Calibur to date.
