View Full Version : Uh oh - Soul Calibur IV on Xbox 360 requires a hard drive
Over at the official Xbox 360 listing for Soul Calibur IV at Xbox.com, there is a box which clearly states that a hard drive is REQUIRED for the game. This will surely annoy core owners and even those with a 20GB hard drive who are frequent content downloaders.

if you dont have a hard drive by now you are not using your 360 anyway.
I hate this news that people put here just to make ps3fanboys happy!
Big deal Soul Calibur 4 needs a HD on 360... ps3 needs HD for instalation of much more games... even with the "super, hyper, mega , blast" BD media...
Please stop with this news that try to blame X360!

Hard drive installations are always better than loading something from optical media. I'd like to see a mandatory install on all games. Some titles just load too f*cking long off the DVD or blu-ray
i quit pc gaming because of instalations... i like consoles because you put the discs and play. period....
but...if i need to install SC4 to play on 360...you bet i will! ;)

Seeing it still only supports the same resolution as 'Soul Calibur 2' on the original Xbox (720p) did is kinda funny to me. Not that it won't look better.

Lol, you sound so scared and defensive in your post.
no way... but it's boring to see the "big" news of "ibm's ps3's chips help with oil..."
and almost every x360 news HERE is bad
edit: by the way..i don't need to be scary...i have the x360, the wii, psp and the last gen games... in the future i'll get a ps3 to complete the colection...so, i'll be able to play the good games of all plataforms.... i just don't like to see fanboys made news...

MS was always pretty vocal about their games never needing a hdd to be played in the past. If they changed their policy, I think that would have made news before this SC4 article.
It may be that to play everything the game has to offer, a hdd install would be required. But a Core user could still pop the game in and play without a hdd.
Wasn't there a game which came out a short while back which required a hdd to play extra content?

This is good news. I would love for more games to have some installs on the 360. Helps with loading times (not that they're long, but even if they're quick it makes them quicker). Helps run the games smoother (and games already run smoother on the 360 compared to the PS3, so if they get any smoother it's really going to make the PS3 look like it runs fugly). And if it makes it to where it runs the disc drive just a little less when playing it thas a bonus too. So many pros to installs, it's worth the one con, which is space required on your HDD.
if i remember well... final fantasy on-line needs to be installed

Honestly if you were to read all the articles on here you will see that it's bad on all three sides. I might as well say the same thing your saying about the PS3 version of the game. "Big deal Soul Calibur 4 needs an install of 7 gb on the PS3...360 needs a HDD for use of the game even with the "convenient, not hard to develop for" DVD media disc.
Please stop with this news that try to blame the PS3!"
No matter what side you choose to defend, it's always going to sound bad.

That was kind of a one off, it didn’t integrate with Xbox Live and if I remember right you had to pay a separate fee to play that anyway.

but it's not make me happy... i like both consoles. just don't get my ps3 yet because i think the big part of good games are in x360 too

Splinter Cell Double Agent required an HDD/memory unit to play and that was one of the earlier games in the 360's life.

MS with the "no install games" , sony with "we have the best retrocompatibility" and "sixaxis is goood, no need to rumble"

FFXI and SC4 are 2 totally different games.
If I remember correctly there where other games that require HDD aswel.
Just hope it wont take 7GB lie the PS3 version.

You just pay for FFXI service/account, (Like most MMORPGS). And you can play whit Xbox live Silver account. the server is from SE not from Microsoft.

i known they are diferent games, i just was answering the friend question... and yes...HOPE the x360 don't take so much to install, but i think that won't be, x360 always needed less space in HD :)

It definitely wont be 7gb for the 360, and will most likely not require an install. But rather be used for caching like with the first Xbox. But 1mb left? no way that would be enough, you dont need all those demo's

What about people who wanted a game console and didn't have the money to buy the more expensive sku. Think about it, there are people who love games but don't have the cash to buy the best. Not everyone can dedicate their funds for games alone when it comes to other things more important.

Doesnt matter. The console is essentially useless without the HDD. And the memory cards are about $50, when you bought the core to save $100. So you're only saving $50. And 360 saves are pretty big sometimes, that card fills up too fast. Think about it, they should have never released it without the hdd. If you want casual gaming at a low cost, get a Wii... I did (and two 360's).

Of course every sku should of had a hdd in it. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out when the original Xbox had built in memory also but when the 360 first came out the hard drive wasn't really emphasized to the public as a mandatory necessity for playing games. Now times have changed and people are noticing the need for more space. As time goes it's only going to get cheaper. I was defending the early adopters, the ones who wanted the latest in gaming but couldn't afford the best.

It's also funny how MS is a huge supporter of digital distribution yet they offer a SKU without a harddrive. They even insist that devs do not use the HDD.

As recently as GTA4. Rockstar are on record saying they explored the idea of an install but MS would not budge.
So now we are to believe Namco hold more sway?
Most likey it is a typo and will be man install for online like Burnout.

Wait - the ppl who didn't pay the exorbitant price for a 20gb HDD are the retards? Wrong way round perhaps.
I have a clean elite I play online and a modded arcade in the living room - it would be nice to play SC4 with my friends on the second machine without having to lug my elite down.
You only really need a HDD if you go online with your console. I have found in practice the memory card holds a lot of saves. Most are small and only games like Forza take up a big chunk.

well we'd all like our games in 1080p but we can blame the beloved game devs for that. on the other hand, comparing SC2 and 4 by their resolutions and worrying about the result is ridiculous. did you know that an Atari 2600 and a PS2 handle the same max resolution? resolution doesn't mean THAT much

come on now where are the people whinning about required installs. here people seem to be saying its the consumers fault for not buying a 360 with a hard drive on ps3 threads its sony's fault for not including a faster drive . when will people realize the blatant bias on this sh*te site.

Its about time they did that. Hopefully more games will require the drive more in the future. The drive thrashing around searching for files never sounded very appealing anyways and I doubt its all that good for the dvd drive.

yeah i think it was that football manager game from awhile back. i'm sure the hd will be 'optional' on 360, that's microsofts policy, the games must be 'playable' without a hard drive.
perhaps microsofts is readying an announcement that they are finally offering a hard drive as standard on all skus perhaps?

It won't install only mmorpg's are allowed to do that on 360 even they they have a limit on how much they can expand too.
Burnout paradise needed an hdd for online play too only EA/Crit didn't tell us, its probably a 2mb profile and settings file or at worst a 100-200mb cache that won't even be there if you're not playing the game.

The HDD will not be required for normal gameplay. It is only required for custom built characters. You will not be able to use custom characters without a HDD because the memory cards can't hold the custom character save file.

well thats hardly a 30 min install.
And tbh yes if someone bought a 360 without an hdd they have no clue what the last xbox was about and deserve to be left out. Shame they had to make the arcade package at all since it ruled out another blinx.

The 360 should bnever have sold without a HDD, and by now there shouldn't be any still available. The core/arcade should have been pahased out a long time ago. The lack of mandatory HDD has gimped the 360 a bit, while it doesn't "need" a HDD unlike the PS3 of late, a HDD for caching would have been an advantage.
On the plus side, at least the 360 is free from the chance that devs may decide you need to do installs like on the PS3
