Ok a first hands on with the datel 4g hardrive, with great thanks to www.darkplanets.co.uk for the sample.

so lets get on with it when first opened the package i realised that this device may be HUGE but light beyond belief in comparison to british 2 pound coin not much difference in weight, so your not going to feel as if your lugging about a brick.

As you can see the battery has it's own custom cover that fits pefectly in place of the orignal without any give just like the original, picture of cover and battey below .

First thing to do before anything was to strip the thing down
and examine the inner workings of the hardrive, first impression this device was created not to be duplicated.

Datel used a military grade actel ic which is near impossible to reverse engineer, many modchip makers use this ic for that very reason it's secure
and almost impossible to extract any original code fom the ic picture below.

Onto the compact flash micro drive the drive is a magistore 4g i personally have used the 2.2g version for photography which was known for its problems losing data and simply failing altogether its not a solid state drive it's much like a real hdd just much smaller, it has plates and moving parts = possible problems if knocked dropped etc i dont see people planning on dropping a psp or the 4ghdd atleast i hope not.

However the 4 gig version is a different build alltogether so might not have the short comings of its little brother the 2.22g.

here is a close up of the fake memory stick with flexi cable quite secure and not much chance of doing damage to the delicate wires encased in the cable

finally a shot of the pcb cf and its cover sorry its bit out of focus rushed these shots had quite busy day and didnt have time to set tripod up etc

http://img458.imageshack.us/img458/6376/dsc00983sm.jpg

Putting the little chap back together it's time to test for a 1.3g movie the time taken to transfer, was 8 mins the time estimated said 14 so i decided to open the little fellow back up and go directy via a card reader to the cf much quicker at 5 min 34 sec not dramatic but enough this made me think why didnt datel make the cf card removeble so [A] you could carry more cf cards round with you and [b] for the quicker transfer rate via a card reader.

ok time for sleep mode ok this thing gets hot when you either use sleep mode or pause a game as expected this is normal and should not be problem anyway for the drive itself but maybe to the circuits below the hdd of the psp over time.

last comments its a great little device and does what it says on the tin, its not anywhere near as big and clumsy looking as it looks in the pictures it flows with the contour of the psp feels nice to hold still maybe not so good, if you have really small hands the main downside really is any current case you own you would have to remove the hdd and battery from the psp to put it away nother downside where is the white one :P

in reality it would have been better to simply have the cf convertor connected on an extendable cable so you could put the device away in your pocket, with the option to hotswap the actual cf card having multiple ammounts of cards just like you can with ms's.

usb charger with the psp usb power cable giving me 10000 mah of juice.

a damn sight better than the datel or sony battery fits in my pocked nice not heavy or bulky either just got to do the same with the hdd and im all set.

Hmm.. having slight difficulty deciding whether to get this or not.. lol.. Also having seen neoflash's version, think i'd much rather go for datels product.
4gb cf card, 3600mah battery, cf cards swappable n much cheaper than mem sticks, better grip.. why wait 1.5yrs for 4gb mem sticks to come out n drop in price similar to datel's price?? *sorry just trying to convince myself* :D

Anyone know the best place to buy this if living in the uk?

ok we have problem, you cant play head to head over wireless unless you both own a datel hdd.

datel hd head to head with a memory stick craps out because the memory stick is faster than the hd.

cf to ms duo adaptor so you can also plug in your ms sticks in

EnTiTy
i try cf to ms for head to head the compact flash is faster than the micro drives but if all els fails the the adaptor above i think will do the job for your head to head matches. EnT blank duo dummy ones any idea were i can get one other wise it look's like a pcp board and etch some out

im going to try a solid state cf i have a 2 gig kicking around.

as for blanks use a peice of vero board and modify it never scene a dummy duo i could blow mold some tho :) and use some fcc ribbon with correct spacing for the contacts.

still not dispatched, yeah i mailed'em on monday and tuesday, no response. I chose the free delivery, so maybe that explains it. Anyhow, i cancelled my order today. lol

A number of reason, primarily becoz $ony has now got the upper hand.. which u'll notice with gta. Requires 2.0! So think i'll be wise and wait to see what develops! Stickin to my 1gig mem stick for now...

Are you referring to a 5GB CF card hooked up to the psp via the Datel HD adaptor? If so, how well do homebrew and iso's run , if at all? How fast? I own the Datel 4Gb HD and may considering buying such a CF card when the prices come down.

Thanks

I read somewhere on here you cant multiplay using a psp with a mem card duo and a psp using the Datel device because of the speed accessing the data is quicker on one over the other, did I get that right?

What if I had 2 psp's using a Datel device on both, will I be able to multiplay then?

Or do I just stick with 2 x 1gig mem card duo's?

bro that makes no sense...the hdd is faster than umd...that would make people playing games from UMD and memstick impossible...has to just be you

i never said from umd doh i said mem stick vs hdd and it aint just me learn to read ;)

if people want to test it gives connection failed when tested with need for speed, swap to an identical mem stick vs mem stick all is fine its tad too slow the hdd im afraid, the link up is fine its the head to head level load where the memstick pips it and it falls flat.

btw the same happens with different brand mem sticks because of speed difference i would imagine from umd also but have not tested yet.

and dude chill i get nothing wrong during my tests and it is triple checked FACT
so before coming on here trying to discredit someone reasearch it yourself
before saying "it must be you" if it does not work it dont work simple the same test with another sample gives the same result, the same iso on identical memory sticks work still me ? :p

no its not possible the firmware wont allow it simple, later firmware might when sony release offical mem sticks over the 4 gig limit.

you insult me i insult you same deal :P
