View Full Version : WiiKey vs. D2CKey

My Wii installation has completely failed and left me with an unusable drive. I tried to install the D2CKey with FlexPCB and it ripped off an IC leg during a tug test. So, I need a new drive. I have the choice of spending about $100.00 on either a D2C or D2B drive, and it would cost an additional $30.00 for the WiiKey and about $30.00 for a local to install my D2CKey with wires. So, it's the same price. Which one would you recommend? I've heard the D2CKey is a lot better, but I know I can install the WiiKey myself. Thanks.

BTW: I know they are two different chipsets, but they will both work with all Wiis, and I'm trying to decide which chipset with corresponding modchip to get, not which modchip to get on a certain chipset.

D2ckey all the way. No doubt about it. It is the most stable chip out there AFAIK.

If you ripped off a leg it's not entirely dead. You can always use a dremel. The way you would if you had a d2b with cut pins.

OK, so far I have one vote for D2CKey.

As for dremelling the thing to expose a leg, I've already shorted it out with too much solder (removed with braid, but it still didn't work), and I'm sure I overheated it since the pads started lifting off the mess of a molten PCB, and the D2C IC started to get a little shiny on the plastic. I've had terrible luck with this install. :(

well wiikey only works on old consoles and ds2key wont and vice versa so there's not really any point saying which is better. depending what version of the console you have you only have 1 choice which 1 to get.

But if you read his post properly he's buying a new drive so can pick what type he's getting

I personally would do for the older chipset then you can fit the wiikey yourself and save some extra dosh plus there is no problems with the wiikeyregualrish updates when needed the abilty to update vis dvd and it's so bloody cheap i just bought a few of them for £3 each :) (yes that's original ones as well )

if your getting a new drive than get a wiikey their way cheaper than the d2 and they do exactly the same thing.

if you can get an old drive model , get your self a wiikey! cheap as chips, and does what it says on the tin.

I'd actually go with the d2pro or infectus chip. They are both upgradable.

Wiikey is cheap but they have pretty much ended their support at 1.9s. They are much more willing to support the d2pro chip because it is a lot harder to clone. For the wiikey team if they release a new firmware it also benefits the wiikey clones who did nothing but rip off their design.

So for a future proof solution I'd recommend the d2pro.

They have a proven to work solution for the d2c2 drives! Wasabi has just released news that they have one too now -- but there chip as some have claimed is a little flaky. Hopefully, the new Wasabi has ironed out all the old bugs.

if he gets an older drive version ? he wont be putting a d2pro or an infectus/aragon in it ,that's just throwing money away. if he gets a d2c then yes ,this would be his best option. and there will always be support for the wiikey as long as they keep selling them.

Wiikey would be the way to go.

Now they did recently release a new fw did they?

Anyways, this one would be easy for you to solder.

The fact that the WiiKey is cheaper or easier to solder makes no difference. I have a working D2CKey, so I'd be paying for drive + install or drive + modchip, and it would come out the same. What about the rumours that the D2B might eventually be able to detect the WiiKey because of its firmware modification instead of the D2CKey's on-the-fly code modification?

I'll have some pictures up in a little Even though it might be savable, I don't trust myself to do it, and even then, I'd rather have a brand new drive that will work pretty much guaranteed. I will sell it as-is, though, so someone who's good with a soldering iron and has a broken drive, like a modder, can make good use out of it.
