View Full Version : MS confident the 360 will have 7 year life-span
Microsoft Game Studios boss Shane Kim has said that he is confident the Xbox 360 will have at least a 7 year lifespan which should see all the games in the Too Human trilogy appear on the console. " "You're going to continue to see technical innovation, it might be additional capabilities to the current format - but honestly we haven't made those kind of decisions yet." said Kim.

Okay a little over the top, I just don't think it will last that long! Mine keep dying because of **** hardware but the software will be okay.

A seven year life-span when the console can barely last 3? my 360 is now one year old but is a may 2006 model im just waiting for it to die.
To have a lifespan this long you need hardware stability not just games pumping out. The moment MS release a new console or a 'stable' 360 rehash this thing is going.

Maybe old consoles are still dying but I haven't heard of newer consoles (65nm CPU and extra GPU HS) having hardware problems, and with the new rev. (the one that has the GPU and the CPU in one chip), things will be better.
They made mistakes and they pay for them (an not only money, I also talking about negative fame), but now everything seem to run smoothly (or should I say cooler)

Of course, that doesn't mean we won't see a next-gen Xbox sooner than that. They'll just keep the 360 going for an extra year or two after the release of the new model like Sony has with the PS2.

Fantastic, hordes of fucking idiots with their RROD comments on the way.

That would be about 4 more Years. They would have to be working on all 3 right now probably to pull that off. I love how they already have 3 planned, when the game could be a flop.

Obviously they are not talking about the time until the successor as that is probably about 3 or 4 years away. But nice to see Microsoft confirm continued support for a machine once its replacement is out. Now do we actually believe what they are saying as they are know to say one thing and do another.
They are lucky not to get that bad a press fro shafting original xbox owners after the dumping it early. 4 yrs in the U.S. and 3 yrs in Europe is a very short lifespan for a console in my eyes. And I know about the foolish hardware deals that Microsoft always lost on the xbox, but software support could have continued if Microsoft weren't so keen to move on.

I'm not a 360 lover in any way, but I agree with you. I've not heard of any of the newer 360 dying in ever, or one even dying in a quite a while. I'm glad that MS are planning this, since we all lost when the xbox was dumped so early, even those of us that didn't own one. For future reference I sincerely hope that ms refrain from releasing a console in the state the 360 was at first, but talking about now, I think it's safe to say that RROD is a thing of the past, or at the very least an oddity instead of a given.

I would be surprised if Too Human 1 managed to release during those 7 years... That game started development during either the N64 or PS1. Yes, it's been that long.

Lol got to love the sad cases that fear that the next xbox will be out practicall in t he middle of the alleged ps3 life cycle, so spout the RRoD to make themselves feel better :)
Too human is apparently one game split into 3, one of the devs rather arrogantly stated that people don't want long games so they will realease in 3 parts, so i can't see there being an issue with it parts 2 and 3 being released quickly.
As for the seven year cycle, sounds pretty much normal to me, 7yrs for official MS production but likley longer for software support, if previous consoles are anything to go by.

Well ms' previous console was produced for like 4 years, and it's software support, if memory serves, stopped if not at the same time, very quickly after it. I think people needed to hear something like that from them because I've heard quite a few people wondering if they would have to go through the same crap they did with the original xbox. Depending on how good (For me, not for reviewers) gaming gets on the ps3, I might be buying ms' next console (if ps3 gaming doesn't pick up), so regardless I won't really mind if it comes out 4 years after the 360, but if they drop support for the 360 I won't even accept ms' next console as a gift.

Yep but there is a big difference this time around, they own the hardware design. Last time around they didnt and the chip vendors where trying to bend them over, by the final year of the xbox the cost for the video processor from Nvidia was nearly 1/3 the cost of the entire console and Nvidia wouldnt budge. They couldnt do redesigns to cut costs because they didnt own the spec and as a result they just kept bleeding money. This time around they do own it and it will be easy and profitable to support as costs come down.

Well let's hope so, in any case, I believe that confirmation from them about this was greatly needed.
