View Full Version : Rumor: "Jasper" Xbox 360 coming August
According to reports, MS will release the new version of the Xbox 360 which is codenamed Jasper this August and has already assigned manufacturers to make the chips. The Jasper uses 65nm process technology and is designed to use less power, make less noise and use a simpler cooling system.
However, there are other important rumours: TSMC got orders to produce the chip for code-named Valhalla Xbox 360 design, which is rumoured to combine microprocessor and graphics chip in a single piece of silicon.
The code-named Jasper design of the Xbox 360 game console will use ATI Xenos graphics and memory controller hub (GMCH) made using 65nm process at TSMC as well as IBM Xenon central processing unit (CPU) produced at IBM’s 65nm nodes. The new system design is projected to consume less electricity, use less complex cooling systems and also produce less noise.
By contrast, current Xbox 360 design named Falcon utilizes GMCH and eDRAM cores manufactured using 90nm process technology at TSMC as well as CPU built at IBM using 65nm fabrication process. The first-generation Xbox 360 used 90nm chips.

We can only hope.

Why wouldn't it be...they're not re-releasing the console like the Ds Lite or PStwo they are just making some internal hardware modifications.

Why wouldn't integrating the power supply come under "Internal Hardware Modifications"?

Because modifications are being made to the internal hardware... and the ps is not internal. Hence... "Internal Hardware Modifications".

I'd take a huge psu over a RROD any day, and yes, i've had my box die on me

I really dont see what the big deal is about an integrated power supply, it just adds difficulty to cooling and on the off chance that something happens to the PSU (im looking at my first dead ps2 slim) its easily replaceable. If they would make a smaller PS3 with the power supply on the outside I would buy it in a heartbeat.
Im hoping Jasper does ship that soon, I know several people that are holding out on the 360 out of fear...none of them have had one to go bad but have read enough to be scared off. Heck I'd probably get another just for the peace of mind, my launch 360 hasnt ever had a hickup but I do always wonder if it will some day. I havent really heard of people having trouble with falcons much but it still doesnt give enough peace of mind to most.
I would really like to see both the ps3 and 360 get smaller, perhaps as the chips shrink we will see "slim" versions of both. The integrated cpu/gpu thing from MS sounds like the perfect opportunity for a Wii sized 360. Im pretty confident a slim PS3 is already in the planning stages...they have done it with both the PSX and PS2 so why would the PS3 not do the same.

Tell your friends there's no fear to have with the new X360 65nm CPU and GPU heatsink (Arcade, Elite), as I haven't heard of anybody having the RROD with this SKU including myself :).
As for the size, I don't think is a big issue, is not the size of the Xbox 1... :o

i know but it will probably require a chip just like the wii,you can read about it here:

Screw Jasper, just skip right to Opus and Vahalla why don't you.

i agree.
having an external p/s does make it easier to swap out if 'just the power supply' dies on you. as where an internal p/s dies on you, you've got to box up the unit and send it in for repair (unless a user fixes it themselves, which i would probably do)
there is no big deal about an external p/s, i don't know why people make a big deal about them. every game device i own (except the ps3) has an external p/s.

The internal p/s would probably get really hot anyways.
