View Full Version : Fully bricked Wii?

Hi my mate has given me his wii to look at.
It's a UK launch model, it looks like he has NEVER connected it to the internet to do any updates.
Anyway it is modded (and that was fine) he's put in an american version of Paper Mario and then said yes to the update, he powered it off after about 40 minutes thinking it had gone wrong!!!
Well it powers on to an Opera error screen, the cursor appears and moves but the buttons don't seem to do anything.
Is this recoverable at all?
I have tried a disk set to autoboot but it didn't!
Would something like an Infectus be able to repair it?

Thanks for any help for him.

Correct me if I'm wrong as I've never had a brick or semi brick to deal with but wasn't this the problem later cured with Metroid Prime or SMG updates?

Don't know how to force the firmware to look at it but at a worst case if you can get a YAOSM 3.0 chipped drive and set the chip to Autoboot then run MP3 or (I think) SMG then it might force the update.

Eventually the fix will come....absolute worst case fix for now would be buy another wii and swap the drives to use the chipped drive in the new hardware. You might even be able to sell the faulty parts.
(I'd be interested for one but only if the price was reasonable)

Anyways, GL

metroid etc fixed previous SEMI bricks unfortunately. In old updates the updates were so significant that you could not use the wii anymore at all, seemingly similar to your situation :/ A semi-brick is where you can play games but can't get into the settings menu.
The new games can't fix the wii if they can't be booted.. If you CAN get mario galaxy for example to run (of your own region!) it could fix it perhaps
For the future, never ever run a patch that is not your own console's region if the wii is not 100% up to date..

thanks for the replies, like I said it was a mates, not mine, I am well aware of update issues, it's a shame he wasn't.

Cheers

Will it be possible for you to just remove the modchip and send it to Nintendo for repairs ? AFAIK, there is no sticker whatsoever that voids the warranty, etc :)

It was a launch Wii so it is out of warranty, the decision is his but I know he bought it second hand.
Thanks for the input.

I live in a third world country, so am not sure about this, but is there a way he can send it to Nintendo for repairs and agree to pay up for the repair cost ? It certainly won't be more than a new Wii :p

Over here in India, usually if the warranty has ended, a person can still call up a particular company and ask them to repair the product while agreeing to pay the required cost :)

Well he has told me he will have been reading this thread so I'll be asking him today what he wants to do.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions :)

It doesn't show the black health and safety screen, nor the A prompt, it just jumps to an Opera error screen.

He's bought a new machine now so I'll swap the dvd-rom drives over for him sometime next week.

Hmm...the other thing I had thought of is a 3.0 YAOSM set to run autoboot with an update game in the drive, but you say it doesn't show the H+S screen?

I think it needs to go past that but it's the only option left I can think of. If he wants to sell it on for a decent price lemme know, could even be interested in the D2C drive of the new machine if he wants to get rid of it.

Also willing to try the YAOSM thing if he likes before he decides what to do with it, only costs incurred will be the postage as I'd like to try and unbrick and have never had a bricked unit to work with and not going to brick my own to test! Lol
