So I got the game, and now its asking me to update ... should i do it?
I have Wiikey 1.9s on a US system and the game i have is PAL (can't seem to find the US version) - Wouldn't wanna brick my system or anything.

My advice would be no.
Never run an EU update on a US Wii or vice versa.
It's just asking for trouble.
I take it from this (an update required) means that MarioKart is not gonna work with the WiiKey without another update :(

I played it fine without updating on my us console with wasabi modchip. I let the update begin to install and pulled the plug when it got about a third of the way done (the metroid prime 3 trick) and then i burned a second copy after using brickblocker on the iso. works like a charm, no update installed.
KeWLMoNk
04-07-2008, 07:07 PM
so after the 1/3rd trick you gotta use brickblocker?
Coolza
04-07-2008, 07:51 PM
Instead of the 15% trick and wasting 2 discs, you could just BrickBlock and RegionFrii it, then burn it without any problems.
(Region override must be on).

well, actually i didnt waste any discs. one copy is the keeper, and the first one i burned on dvd-rw. was just lending the man a hand with the method that worked for me. freaking trolls
brenston

I wouldnt call that trolling, he was just suggesting a more direct method, there was no insult implied to your own way of getting the job done there, nor any personal insult either.
What DVD RW do you use, mine give me no joy when I try em?

scratch that i got it working :)
Only problem i haveis that i constantly get the 'cannot read disc' error, mostly before a race loads - i pop the disc out, pop it back in and it's fine.
Very odd... not sure what that's about.
KeWLMoNk
04-07-2008, 11:58 PM
err...damnit...now i can't get into the game at all .. i just get that disc error.
I got through the mushroom cup (had to pop the disc out at the beginning of race)...then tried the shell cup and popping it out and back in didn't work. Reset the system and it wouldn't load at all. It even gives me a hard time in the Wii Menu.
So close, yet so far.
This and SSBB are both giving me a migraine lol time for bed... hope to hear some thoughts tomorrow..

Sure it will work, the only thing that could damage your wii is if you tried to update your console with a foreign region disk...But since it's PAL to PAL, there is nothing to worry about.
KewlMonk : Same problem here, except it's happening when a race ends for me...

Hey mfftt666 does that work with an NTSC system too? Or just for PAL systems?
How does this differ from what I have done? I used Brickblocker and then I used RegionFrii.
I got the ppf stuff and i still have my clean mk.iso but i just want to make sure i know what im doing before i go ahead and make the disc.
Thanks!
...you know i just realized, maybe I'm burning at too fast a speed... I'll need to pick up some slower discs (im burning at 6x right now) to test this theory further

Chances are that's because the Nintendo network SUCKS and constantly fails (especially with big hits like SSBB and MK) .. It also may have to do with the system you are using vs the game version (NTSC system vs PAL game).
Just curious - what method did you use for burning the game? What discs and speed?

This is what I did.
1. Downloaded the PPF and applied it the mkwii.iso
2. Went here and got all his tools. http://wii.waninkoko.info/
3. Used Wii Update Remover v1.0 to remove update.
4. Used WiiFrii v2.3b to make NTSC compatible.
5. Burned with Nero 6.3 at 8x on Maxell DVD-R with Pioneer 112D
6. Played Mario Kart Wii on my Wiinja v1!!!
It made it past the Error 001 code, but i was unable to go online due to a error(Mario Kart Wii network not ready yet?). Did not check the Mario Kart Channel due to some people saying elsewhere that it returned the error 001 code. The author of the PPF patch says in the post that he will be releasing a updated PPF with some fixes, but I just wanted to play some local races against my wife, so I'm not in a hurry for the online ****, but I am looking forward to it for the future.

Use W.i.u1.1 to patch update the game so it doesn't ask you for an update, burn with IMGBurn @ 2.4x, all should work fine. Have not tried to patch to NTSC, but will post back shortly on that.

lol, so I popped in my pal import of kart into my NTSC wii and saw it wanted to update...tried to run brickblocker on the iso through wine (i'm a linux user) and it failed (wine and .net didn't want to play nice), so being lazy and not wanting to boot back into windows, i just let the update fly on my wii and now i have no settings menu, the wii just throws an error. BOOOO on me for being lazy!!!!
So now the question, do i have to wait for another disc (NTSC) with a newer update before I can get my settings back? Are there any other known issues with having a semi-brick, other than not being able to change any settings (which I don't need to do really...)?
Thanks!

I recommend that everyone uses W.i.U 1.1 (Available here (http://depositfiles.com/files/2631223)) and run BOTH the Update Remover and the region changer.
Thats what I did with mine and its running 100% fine and never asked me for an update. (Still using 1.9g WiiKey firmware and 3.2US)

I'm running it on two different NTSC-U wiis with 1.9s Wiikeys with no problems whatsoever.
What I did both times:
Run Dual Channel Remover v2 (I had japanese channels from NTSC-J Brawl still)
Update to 3.2U via WiFi (I still have IOS36 after this update, as verified by running Dual Channel Remover again)
[At this point, I updated to 1.9s, but there's probably no need, just listing here for completion. Ran the 1.4 config disk to make sure region free and everything was still enabled]
Popped in Mario Kart Wii PAL, unpatched in any way. Installed the update as prompted.
Dual Channels installed, ran Dual Channel Remover V2 again to see what would happen. Dual channels are detected and deleted, but you will be prompted to update again when you run MK.
Installed the channels a second time, ran MK Wii @ 480p widescreen. No problems, DREs, or anything. Online worked for a few hours before Nintendo brought the servers down.
NOTE: Ran it in 480i over component and over composite. Both cause the game to run at 30FPS instead of 60FPS in Single Player mode on an NTSC-U console. Strangely, 2 player split-battle (didn't try versus race) works in 60FPS. Game plays in 30FPS in battle (iirc) and races over Wi-Fi when you bring a second player online with you. Didn't get to test single player Wi-Fi.
Phew. That's all I know so far.
EDIT:
Also, i just remembered I fumbled through the Wii settings menu too, worked fine and no "semi-brick". Just dual channels, same situation as running Brawl JAP on NTSC-U console. Also have ran NTSC-U brawl and gamecube discs since, all work same as before.
In conclusion, now that dual channels are reversible, there's no real harm in installing the update given you're already at 3.2U

Woohoo WiU1.1 worked! CHEERS!
im using wiikey on a pal system with 3.1e and wiikey update 1.9b i didnt try with these settings but what i did do was update my 3.1e to 3.2e through my wireless connection to the internet then downloaded and burned the 1.9s wiikey update then installed both in that order to my wii then put in my mario kart disc , it asked me to update to be able to use this software. ithought this seems strange but took the gamble and updated once more rebooted my wii and wayhay it worked , now what i will say is that i have not tried any of my other games that i know work but i did go through all these procedures and i can confirm that for anybody that needs to know how to get it running on pal wiikey then follow the steps i have just displayed , cheers
p.s the game rocks !

For NTSC-US: if you have updated from Wii-Chess PAL before, Mario Kart PAL will not prompt you to update.
After I removed the extra channels with Wii Channel Remover V2. Mario Kart PAL does prompt you to update. So, I updated with Wii-Chess. That way you can wait for the US update. The updates are prompted even with Wiikey 1.9S no updates ON.

Or, if you wanna do it the easy way, just patch the ISO so that it doesn't prompt for the update once UPD is green, you are all set with it, then just burn (use W.i.u.1.1). If your console is at 3.1U or higher, you can do this.

Ok, So I am having one hell of a time trying to get this to work and its very aggravating. Here's what I have done so far.
With my 3.2U firmware and 1.9s WiiKey, I have:
1) Applied RegionFrii and BrickBlocker to the ISO, burned. Nothing.
2) Applied just Brick blocker to ISO, burned. Nothing.
3) Applied WiiFrii convert to NTSC, asked to update. Declined.
4) Applied ppf1, WiiFrii convert to NTSC and WiiUpdateRemover, Burned, Nothing.
5) Applied PPF2 and burned. Asked for an update. Declined.
When I say 'Nothing' It means that the 'Mario Kart Wii' logo loads and I can click Start Game' But when I do that, the controller turns off, and the screen just stays black. I need help :(

I'm having a different issue. MK loads up fine and plays fine except when I'm racing the screen sometimes jitters (which isn't too annoying) but then the screen goes completely black for 1 second randomly while I race.
Makes it very hard to play the game. I thought it was overheating so I opened the Wii and put a fan to it..but nothing.
Doesn't happen with other games, just MK.
Used WiiUR (update remover) and region patch (also tried without).
Any ideas?

Hey all, I found the cure for that black screen update. The one where its a black screen after you click Start and just does nothing? Or where you burn a disc via other methods and it asks you to update? Here's what I did that works, but other people leave out.
1) Have WiiKey (or other mod chip installed)
2) Update system to latest (3.2U for me)
3) Update WiiKey to either 1.9s or 1.9g, doesn't really matter though.
Those 3 steps are obvious though
4) Burn game after installing Brick Blocker and RegionFrii with ImgBurn
5) BEFORE STARTING GAME, make SURE to install the update that comes with Super Smash Brothers Brawl, else it will not work. I looked and that was not clearly stated anywhere. I guess people assumed but nothing was said.
6) Insert game and enjoy.
All the threads I have seen said they just did BB and RF with wiikey and it worked, but I'm guessing they left out the part where they did an update with SSBB. My friend did the same thing. He didn't tell me. Finally my roommate late last night was browsing through forums and came across one guy doing the SSBB update and it worked. So I tried that and sure enough, it worked. :)

I just wanted to let you know that I can play Mario Kart PAL on my NTSC wii with wiikey without any problems. Here's what I did:
- Update wiikey to 1.9s (I had 1.9g previously)
- Update the wii to 3.2U from wii menu
- Run the setup disk 1.4 to make sure the "Update Blocker" option is enabled
- Launch Mario Kart PAL
- Apply the update required by Mario Kart (the wiikey will block it)
- Have fun!!!
As easy as that... Hope this helps!

Why don't you configure the WiiKey to block disc updates? This requires the dev option to be enabled as well. Both can be set using the config disc. These are new features that block the disc update.

when you block the update will it keep trying to update each time you turn it on?

I block all disk based updates. I update the Wii through internet, that way I don't have a risk of updating outside of my region.

I would let it always on also. Do the updates from internet.
For my experience, with the "update blocker" activated, when I first launched Mario Kart, it asked me to do the update, I did it (in fact it was blocked by the wiikey) and then after the reboot, it never asked me to update it again, the game starts directly.

Updated the Wii from 3.1E to 3.2E, then updated the Wiikey from 1.9b to 1.9s and used the latest config disc to select necessary options. Popped in Mario Kart Wii, let it update and it played without a problem :)

I have NTSC 3.2U w/ SSBB update and wiikey update 1.9s and config 1.4. I also have "Dev mode" on and "update blocker" on. To be safe, I ran a system update which loaded something. The PAL MK wants to do an update, but when the system restarts there are duplicate forecast and news channels as well as a screen saying the game disc cannot be read shows. I keep getting the same screen from then on after every race, and it only lets me complete two races before the message won't go away.
I then used the channel remover 2.0 and tried a version with brickblocker v1.3R2, and a version with both brickblocker v1.3R2 and regionfrii v1.20. This has the exact same problem (with exception of no duplicate channels).
Any suggestions before I waste more discs trying wiu1.1 or regionfrii only?
Also when using the config disc 1.4 and turning dev mode and update blocker on, do I choose "reset console"? Or does this revert those settings to being turned off?

if the game starts, you did the patching etc right. From then on, it's burning problems, media problems, etc. (that is, if you didn't scrub the iso)
so change the brand of discs and burn at4x max

I tried Wiu1.1 against another un-RARed image applying both my region and removing the update. To be extra safe, I burned the iso at 6x (the slowest my software will burn) and it worked!!! I don't even have extra channels. You we're probably right on the burning speed.

THIS WORKED, No More Black Screen after pushing "Start"
For those running 3.2U NTSC wii's and you're wanting to play the PAL Mario Kart without bricking your wii, you need the update from Super Smash Brothers Brawl (NTSC version) I downloaded the DVD5 Version of SSBB and used the update from it, immediately popped it out and popped in MK. No More Black screen after pushing Start.
Great Game....I'll definitely be purchasing a copy.
PS To avoid annoying problems, I haven't installed the channel, just waiting for multiplayer until i have my NTSC version
