I am using a Wiikey upgraded to 1.9s, my system is 3.2U and i burned SSBB onto a Verbatim DVDDL at 2.4x.
The game loads up and gets to the title screen, but the second I hit the A button it gives me a message stating that it 'cannot read disc'. Same thing happens if I let it start playing the intro movie - it plays about 4 seconds of it and then gives that cannot read disc error again.
I've read that this may simply be a media problem and that i should get a disc that i can burn slower - but others have said it may be the laser ... so my question is ... which is it? If it's the laser can I just clean it myself - im fairly good with electronics so opening up the system and cd rom aren't an issue.
Hope someone can help me out .. especially before Mario Kart comes out (which will probably have the same headache attached)
THANKS!

I had originally burned mines on a Ritek DVD-R DL disc, but I would get error 001. After that, I tried with the DVD+R DL Verbatims and that worked fine. I have also change my burner to the Pioneer 112D that a couple of people recommend.

right now I am using verbatim DL's ... I read somewhere the DL RW discs work too (especially since you can burn them slower than 2.4x which is what im doing now).
As far as my burner .. I'm using an HP Light scribe 16x .. not sure the model # but it's fairly common - think maybe that's it?

It is not likely to be a laser issue as it is reading the game fine to begin with, without any trouble.
Do you have layer break set?
- On your burning program, make sure you have a layer break set when burning DL media.
How fast is your burning speed?
- Best setting is 2.4x-4x, the disc can be read more accurately, lowering loading times.
What Mod-Chip are you using?
- If its a WiiKey, make sure you have the 1.9s FW update.
- If its a D2Pro/D2CKey, I personally use the swap method I have a vid tutorial if you need, you would also need to burn a 4.37 GB disc.
- If its a Wasabi, not sure.

I have a Wiikey with 1.9s - Wii is at 3.2U

Ok, in your IMGBurn you will see a tab that reads "Tool's" then click on the last option, "Settings" then from there you will see a tab that says "Write" click that. Make sure Layer break is set, and that you verify your burn upon completion, if that fails you, then the only other thing I can think of is adjusting the POT, which I DO NOT recommend, if worse comes to worse, you will just have to burn a 4.37 GB NTSC version, and swap on the error message screen and it will work without and problems, btw this find was by me, heres the vid for reference.

Layer break is not important when the SSBB backup is playing on a WiiKey modded Wii. I have burnt 2 copies (Pioneer 112D burnt @ x2 speed) of SSBB on Ritek D01 dye dual layer discs 1 with the layer break and 1 without makes no difference. I always burn my backups with CloneCD the program has never let me down (version 5.3.1.0)
I have always burnt on Ritek dye discs for all my backups (Wii, Gamecube, XboX 360 and DVD movies) and never had any dre or any other problems that's why I have always stuck to Ritek dye discs.

It's mostly according to a users preference, I personally prefer Verbatim for DL, for single layer I use Sony +/-R.
IMGBurn is one of the most reliable burning software out to date, Slysoft also make reliable software, so again, its in a users preference. When it comes to the game having an error I have tried many different methods and the only thing I have found to work for the dual layer SSBB is the swap method.

Ok so I got the game working, only problem is in that quest mode thing. I can get to the first match, beat the opponent (mario or kirby) then the game gives me that 'cannot read disc error'.
If i play classic mode it's all good, just not that quest mode.
And the movie that starts off with that quest mode is a little jumpy.
any ideas?

Is it a single layer disc, if it is, you will not be able to play quest mode unless you have the DVD9 handy as well.

I did the swap method, loaded DVD9, took it out when it locks up after that sound error. Put the DVD5 in, main title comes back, pop it back out and put the DVD9 back in . and i can play it up until that first quest mode is complete .. then when the movie is supposed to play (i assume). . it gives me that cannot read disc error again.
Just curious - what do you think the best chip is for the Wii? Currently I am using a Wiikey

if you dont do the sse (quest mode) you wont get ALL of the characters unlocked in the game FAST. there is other ways to get them but if you do the sse you can get them all in a day easy. so better to burn on a DL disc. also you miss all the cool movies.

i have it on a DL the problem is it's not loading up .. it gets to the intro movie, the sound goes out after 2 seconds and it tells me it cannot read the disc
I'm using Verbatim + DL's burning at 2.4x
No clue what I'm doing wrong, if it's the media or my laser ... I've tested other US games that are on single layer discs and have had no problem (with the exception of Mario Kart, but that's a PAL game)
ugh.. frustration

Honestly, IMHO, the ones I favor most are, D2Pro, D2CKey, WiiKey, Cyclowiz, and Wasabi. Other than that I am not sure. And don't be frustrated about the SSBB DVD9, it happens to pretty much everyone, and if it doesn't happen, I really do suspect they are talking about the 4.37GB because that one doesn't lock up, so for now thats my story.

OK .. well at least its not just me - i was really banging my head against my desk there for a while. Funny thing is I'm not even a really big fan of the game I just kinda wanted it to work and it frustrates me that I can't figure out why it won't. Then theres the worry of more DL games for the Wii coming out in the future and this problem continuing.

i have no idea what's wrong with my system --- I had my buddy mail me a copy of the game that works on his system with a WiiKey and all the same settings as mine but I get a disc read error right after the white screen (before the intro movie plays). I have a copy that I made that at least gets to the title screen but thats it. This leads me to believe it HAS to be something with my laser and DL discs as every other game and copy works fine. I have yet to try a genuine copy of SSBB but i can only assume it wont work.
Friggen Nintendo.

Back in 1.9g, I burned 3 copies (using image burn with layer, clonecd, and nero) and they all sufferered from exactly what you had. If you let the intro play it freezes, and after the first sse match. 1.9s seemed to make it worse, as it took maybe 3 boots to get it going, mashing start to get to the title. I have a memorex 16xddl, using memorex discs. Switched to verbatim and it runs perfectly. But since you're already using those... I don't know. Maybe try switching up your media anyway.
Something that worked briefly for me mentioned in another thread is to try turning screen burn in reduction off. After I did that, I was able to watch the whole intro for the first time, and got pretty far in the second sse video before it stopped.

i do and so do many others. ther's a trick to burning this and this is what i and many others did:
burn with imgbirn at 2.4x speed using verbatim +R DL disc and use the layer break in write settings: 2084960. once i did that the game fired right up after wasting 3 other disc brands trying to get this to work.
