View Full Version : More On Third Place Revolution & PSP HD
Gamespot had a chance to catch up with the much publicised analysts Piper Jaffray and consequently shed some more light on predictions for poor Revolution sales and a new PSP model equipped with a hard drive.
Today, GameSpot caught up with Gikas for a bit of explanation on his analysis, starting with the forecast that the Revolution would have no significant impact (positive or negative) on Nintendo's place in the console market through 2008.
'As a starting point, that's essentially what we're looking at," Gikas said. "Nintendo will have the same 15 percent plus or minus market share.'
As shocking as the Revolution controller might have been for many gamers, Gikas didn't think it would substantially affect Nintendo's fate in its first couple of years of release. 'I don't think that the controller's a big enough deal that it's changing [Nintendo's] place in the market,' Gikas said.
As for the hard-drive-equipped PSP, Gikas considers it a natural choice for Sony for a couple of reasons. 'If it really is going to be a multidimensional entertainment device,' Gikas said, 'it's going to need a hard drive so you can store greater amounts of data in it.'
Beyond fulfilling the company's vision for the handheld gaming gadget, a hard-drive-equipped PSP would also let Sony reprice the hardware (possibly selling the base PSP for $199 and the new model for the original price point of $250) and stem the losses that come from regular price cuts on gaming platforms. It's a tactic Gikas said he expects to see from more console makers in the future.

ok how could this guy be saying this. The controller isn't going to affect the market of the revolution? IT'S A REMOTE!!! it's so incredibly laughable it damages nintendos already low reputation of innovation in front of good gameplay (personal oppinion) I mean honestly. the only way that the controller is gonna be cool is if it works and works really damn good. In that case the innovation works with a boom. the other hand nintendo your done.
If this guy seen my middle finger and pissed off look on my face about his stupid call he still wouldn't know that I am about to headbutt him in his face and his ***** titts for being the retard he is. Analyze that ****.

i'd be glad to voice my "oppinion" nintendo is mostly known for innovation in games and now in consoles. The mainstream people want to see hardcore graphics with good gameplay and nothing too far out there. Innovation only works if the gameplay is fun too (we love katamari) (pikmin)
(and most mario franchises) a lot of nintendos titles fail though they may be innovative but they are just flat out boring because they go too far into the realm of weird and not into the realm of holy **** i can't break away from the console. In my oppinion which i will forever stand by innovation only works if there is a impact on the gamer. I've introduced the picture of the remote to tons of my friends to get their reactions and not even a tenth didn't **** themselves after seeing how rediculouse it was.
It isn't creative it's rediculouse innovative. a good example is remember when a classmate came in with the shirt that could light up and then after he drank out of the drinking fountain and accidently caught on fire :-D

gone: come on now man. you make no sense. if people really wanted "hardcore graphics and good gameplay" everyone and their mom would own a gamecube instead of an inferior ps2. it's all about advertisement and brainwashing these days. this is actually something that will make people want it because they want it, not because it's what all the "cool" people have. you really think the ds is a gimmick? you think nintendo makes games that are too far out there? maybe they are for you, but nintendo makes some of the most enjoyable games. did you bother to tell your friends about the full 3d motion detection that the "remote" utilizes? do you even know about it? did you know that it's backwards compatible with every previous nintendo console? did you know you can use a standard gamecube controller as well (at the least)? i'd say nintedo is offering way more that any other next gen console.. tell me you don't want to play a new punch out game on revolution! or racing game, or zelda, or baseball, or golf, or hockey, or any other way you can think to utilize the controller.

I'm gonna look past all that and ask you one question. Do you know me? No you don't. I know my **** and I knew all that. But I know nintendo way more then you because chances are I was playin it before you were a spermcell in your daddy's sac. My posts have always been informitive and correct and this one is too. You even failed to notice that I have a modded gc in my avatar. So why the **** do you think I wouldn't know this. I love my gc and your right ps2 sold but only because it was out first and that's why your right the marketing was the key factor, everybody was impressed by the new gen graphic factor and was quick to hate on the xbox and gamecube because they felt the ps2 was their baby and didn't deserve to be dissed (like with me and my 64 even the ps1 obviousely owned back in the day). That's why xbox is going to own because they got in first and did the same exact thing that the playstation did 10 years ago with the ps1, they hosted it on a mtv show. And btw I'm confused. hows the compatibility gonna work out when your friend has crappy remotes for the next gen and your use to playing it with your old gamecube controller that I prefer. If it aint broke don't fix it and that's nintendos flaw. Also the backwards compatibility shows that your fishing. It's not new to next gen and it's not even new to current gen. And if you think that it's hard the drive is just a dvd-9 complient drive. Meaning it can also play dvd-5's meaning that it can play 1.8's. I still stand by my post. Another weak attempt at current innovation is the gc link cable. I loved the fact that I couldn't play extra stuff with 4 swords and I couldn't download the free minigames from things as simple as phantasy star and so on and so on. They deprive you so you can buy more useless parts. even worse then the remote dongle for xbox.

Theres only one P in opinion.
Also the backwards compatibility shows that your fishing. It's not new to next gen and it's not even new to current gen.
But being able to download and store titles from the older consoles into internal flash memory is. (For free)

People have said the same thing about the N64 controller, especially the thumbstick, and it turned out to be great. Maybe thats why Sony adopted it into their controllers, same with sega and microsoft? (Don't forget the rumble.) But if you still want to live in the past, you can buy a controller cradle like this: http://img.engadget.com/common/images/4732852316449374.JPG?0.5252214982662287
And spending extra money on this shouldn't be an issue if you are willing to spend $300-$400 on an Xbox360 in the firstplace.
And if you think that it's hard the drive is just a dvd-9 complient drive.
So is the xbox360's drive.
Another weak attempt at current innovation is the gc link cable. I loved the fact that I couldn't play extra stuff with 4 swords
That game comes with the link cable.

I agree with kgonepostl on that particular point, There's many games (ex: 4 swords) you HAVE TO own other things beside the GC to get everything you paid for. Maybe the link cable came with the game but the GBA and GBA game didn't... I certainly will stick with Nintendo for all of my life but what they did with the GC - GBA thing is wrong and I hope they won't do something like that with the Revo (except different ways to play (read controller add-ons), but still be able to play normally with only the remote and joystick)

Ok now that i look back and i'm calmed down. I realize that you didn't deserve what I said to you. hectic, obviousely a different case. The main thing that I have a problem with is his obviousely wasn't his oppinion. He's a mario loving cockmunch that was out to kill my rep because I give mario a big pimp slap. There's probobly gonna be some weak ass followup defending himself but check all his 200 something posts. it's all nintendo and psp. the xbox posts he DID contribute to are comprised completely of xbox general threads. In conclusion he's a gates hater. Not a gamer. So if he wants to go on another forum and throw shots that I don't know something about. Fine, that's resonable. But here stay off my turf.
and about the gamecube thing. I bought a gamecube system to play gamecube games. I don't own a gameboy advance because it doesn't fancy me. If they do want to offer extra content it shouldn't be "extra" it should be innovative in the sense that if you want to play the mini games or whatever you should be able to play them with your gamecube to if you really want to and get that extra thrill on your advance if you feel like it. I know a lot of hardcore pso fans were pissed when they had to go next door and borrow their friends advance so they could enjoy the true "full game"
If one wants to truely own, one must own in all games.

Well maybe I was wrong about you, I maybe have the same opinion about the GC-GBA thing but your language and attitude is intolerable. Please think about that : what make the biggest impact on the reader and is the most likely to make him think about what you say?
-yeah your momma comes with two pony tails that's why i love fuckin her throat. But does the game come with a game boy advance? answer that smartass cum guzzlin know it all jiztrap *****.

-The game maybe comes with the Link Cable but that's not all we need. We also need to own a GBA, which is not included with the game.
To others reading this : all I'm trying to do here is to make this guy a better person.
In my case (very seriously), I'm an anti-violence person, I'm 20 and have never got into a fight, never hit anyone hard (except a single blow in my sister's chest when I was young). Maybe this will sound contradictory but if I would be able to do so I would kill (painlessly of course) all people who would be able to hit someone in the purpose to hurt. The world would be a much better place.
That was my one-minute brainwash of the week, which will hopefully work.

kgonepostl really went postal here.
Back on subject anyway - I am still trying to understand why people knock the gamecube. Everyone of the consoles this generation had their flaws. PS2 has inferior graphics, Xbox had its monsterous controllers and lack of younger oriented games, and Gamecube has very little 3rd party or online support. I have loved every Nintendo published game (sports ones not so much). Also, most 2nd and 3rd party games that have come to the gamecube were well made. Nintendo is also showing that they have learned some lessons learned from the gamecube. They are getting major 3rd party support, their system is stylish, and their controller only looks stupid to those who call themselves "733t".
I will personally buy a revolution when it comes out. I will like it even if it sits in the same position as the gamecube this generation. I cant wait to pwn some noobs (or the other way around) on SSB, or even play mario kart ds online next month. I really dont give a **** if that makes me a looser, Nintendo rox my tv box, and it will for years to come.

btw smudgezone I know it aint a mistery or anything but seriousely your the only one to figure out my nickname in about 3 years. I meant for it if you type it into google it would pop up the "correct" meaning.

They need to stop third partying there usual first party games out, granted there good but think what it couldve been if they put starfox adventures 2 in the first party labs instead of getting namco, which only excells in fighter games as far as i can see. They seem to be dumping alote of games on third party dev's this upcomming holiday. I cringe when i here mario basball and mario party werent developed by nintendo themselves. I pray nintendo didnt dog us on the new zelda game!

If you think that Namco didn't do a good job of Mario Baseball I suggest you play it. It's fantastic, and actually makes baseball GOOD. They did Nintendo a FAVOUR - they definately got it right. Namco is a talented bunch.
Hell, they even pulled off a MarioKart arcade which is fun as hell.
But back to the original topic - Nintendo's marketplace may or may not change. But they will change the industry for sure. The X1080 and the PS4 will have the exact same controller. And if you don't think so ("if it ain't broke don't fix it") then you will be playing the same games with better graphics for many years to come. Nintendo has fan-boys for the simple reason that they ARE "out there" and they DO take risks. Save for the occasional risk from Sony (i.e. eye toy) and the former Sega hardware division, there is no one left to push the industry forward. Nintendo is the only one that says "it IS broke and it needs to be fixed" - because it is most definately true. Do you really want to spend $60 on the same game with prettier graphics and more guns?
smudgeone
10-10-2005, 12:36 PM
I admit, NAMCO has done a good job on Nintendo's product (far, far from great, Star Fox Assault anyone?). But they need companies like Square Enix and EA to be giving them exclusives along with the multi-platform. And releasing first doesnt guarantee success (SEGA), being able to out-advertise your rivals and in past generations, have additional features.
And as far as im concerned, Nintendo's philosophy is closer to "it aint broke but lets fix it anyway"
steviep
10-10-2005, 10:58 PM
But it IS broke! If I have to play another game where the ONLY defining feature from the previous game is better graphics and a few new weapons, I will hit somebody. Watch Nintendo's entire TGS conference - they provide some compelling arguments in how video gaming in general is headed toward another possible market crash. (1980's, anyone? NES rescued that)

I have for too long watched Satoru Iwata and his empty speeches. Nintendo fanboy or not, this is far from the 1980s. The video game industry was only worth several hundred thousand dollars vs. the multi-billion dollar industry we see today. The current industry will survive and prosper for the 10 years, and people who buy Microsoft as well as people who can affort to buy Sony will soon realize. Nintendo is a dying breed. Innovation costs money, but it also has its risks. Nintendo lost in 1992 when they stiffed Sony on the Playstation, and even I, a fanboy, can realize that. The only reason that people think that the industry is failing is because nothing but crap is being released. Its the end of a console cycle, of course its all crap, who wants to spend money on current generation consoles?

I agree with you on several points, nintendos fatal flaw was not giving sony a part of the share with the "playstation" addon for the snes. It may not have stopped sony but it would have definetly halted them. With greed came loss and now they are gettin shanked for it. I'm hoping this will be gates downfall too. I'm not a gates fan at all. I just prefer the xbox curently. Unfortunetly nintendo is losing and they keep kicking themself even more. they need to do something hardcore and I don't think innovation is the key.
One thing I don't agree with is that video games will be popular for a long time. I'm looking at a drastic decline within the next 10 years. I have points to back my theory. Main obviouse one is, how long have video games been around? It's eventually gotta die. something newer and cooler is gonna happen or some weak ass stereotype (worse then now) is going to be put on us gamers and sales will decline and the market will crash. Take for example what the other dude said. Atari sold out their company to a computer owner that made a hybrid computer/atari console. If it wasn't for Nintendo I highly doubt games would be around now. Now take into consideration when atari died and Nintendo picked up. It's a ticking time bomb and having gates into the tight competetive market like he loves to do doesn't help. 3 major consoles and one of them is his......that's not a good sign. Remember what happened to netscape before mozilla? plus a ton more examples. Plus ea games keeps buying out independant companies. I beleive they bought 2 this semester. vivendi and take two. there are very few independant companies that are surviving. Meaning little innovation and the same crappy games over and over again. I could go on with this. For all you doubters you just need to come to terms. Corperate America licks it sometimes.
