View Full Version : MS Insider: 60 gig stanard is confirmed, supply issues down to poor planning

According to a rumored MS insider, it is 100% confirmed that the Xbox 360 hard drive is moving to a standard size of 60 GB. "Those configurations are in design verification testing right now. I'd bet that this changeover also contributed to the lack of units. When MS changes major sub-assemblies like this, they try not to over produce the old configurations." he said. He also says that the Microsofts supply issues in February were down to poor planning, supply chain and quality issues restricting production. He makes t clear that it was not a case of demand out stripping supply.

"I have to wonder what the real reasons are that they couldn't ship enough units. They might have converted production capacity for repair. This quarter is traditionally the peak load for returns, which lags peak holiday sales. They may have had supply chain problems of some type. Yield issues with the new CPU. Other quality issues, like a new high fail rate defect that limited how many they could make. Etc. "

As for larger HD's (hard drives), that was always the plan for later in the life cycle. But size was always TBD (to be determined). One consideration you didn't mention regarding the decision of BR (Blu-Ray) vs. downloaded content is streaming speed. I don't know about you guys, but I have BB (broadband) cable to my PC, and 802.1b/g wireless to my 360. It's pretty damn slow to get anything of size onto the 360. I can drive to the video store and back in less time than I could download an HD movie. That would seem to push them towards BR as the HD source for customer satisfaction.

Haha, Microsoft is such a good company. Now the developers will start
using this "standard HDD" in their games, and good bye arcade-SKU. That, or
they force people to buy a harddrive. (PS3's is standard!!! YES!).

Good luck x-losers, soon to be 360-Blue-Ray-addon-buyers :D

your such a horrible excuse for a fanboy dont you read? this is basically turning everything that MS currently offers a 20 gig drive with into a 60gig. probably because manufacturers arent making anymore 20gig drives to begin with so MS has to go with what they can buy and 60 seems to be as low as you can go from where you can get them. this has no indication the core will have a hdd, learn to read the core will still be the core, MS will never step on its toes with that statement its their most valuable sales ploy.

felixM and yourMOM, say what you want, but you can't deny what
a horrible choice it was to include the core-SKU; at the time people
where bitching about how bad of choice it was to include the blue-ray
player on the PS3(go figure), so people didn't complain much (only developers) about
this x-crap.

If I'm a fanboy because I support a superior console (in every which way)
then so be it. I'd rather be a "fanboy" of a console which doesn't break, and
doesn't charge for simply existing (wifi/Live/addons, etc), then the converse.

they will probably be charging the same as they are right now. and instead of a 20 gb include a 60 gb hard drive. stupid fukkers who buy consoles late always win out.

He makes t clear that it was not a case of demand out stripping supply.

If it's not a case of demand outstripping supply, then the supply would have been adequate to meet the demand, which it was not.

Therefore, it IS a case of demand outstripping supply. Their supply just happened to be particularly craptacular.

so what about us that already have the 20gb harddrive, they're making the 60gb a standard, why cant we just trade our 20 for a 60gb, its just bs man....

You should begin with "yes Iam a fanboy" Not "If I'm a fanboy"
Lie to yourself is not good thing to do ;)
As this will never end. Fanboy always stick with there console.
And this is a good proof ^_^ But Iam sure he will understand this someday when he get older.

I dont really care about this. They can do whatever they want to.
And by the way, what was that Ps3 that couldt play Ps1&Ps2 games?

Can you trade in your ipod to apple when they release a new model with a bigger hard drive every year? Can you trade in your tv for an hdtv? Can you trade your computer for a faster model every year? The 20 gig hard drive came out almost 3 years ago, it's about time they upgraded it on the premium not just elite.

'If you're a fan boy'??? You're having a laugh aren't you. Your first sentence is pure fanboy.
