A mother has been shocked after finding out her two children were sent nude pictures on Xbox Live. The mother grabbed the controller from her son and the called Microsoft who said there was nothing they could do. The mother has since banned them from using their Xbox to protect them from becoming prey to online predators. She says while Microsoft has measures to deal with offensive players online, it is too late as the damage has already been done. Michigan State Police have said "this disturbing crime should be a wake up call for parents."

Jennifer, Lansing Resident: "I immediately grabbed the X-Box controller from him, and I went ahead and turned it off. And then I went ahead and called X-Box live, and they told me there was nothing they could do about it. "

Jennifer now fears the safety of her children.

State police say a crime like this is exactly why parents should be aware of online video games.

Detective Thomas Kish: "X-Box Live in particular has video capability so you can see two-way video. It has the ability for text messaging, instant messaging back and fourth. The ability to receive voice messages, so it's as much of a medium as your home computer and parents need to really be aware of that."

oh boohoo. the 360 has controls to lockout kids from this stuff.. if she didn't use them or supervise her kids online then it's her fault. on the other hand whomever is sending pics to kids should be ashamed.

While this was presumerably a silly joke, too many incidents like these and sevices like Live could come under serious external pressure, particularly in the current political climate.

It would be all to easy for restrictive controls to be made mandatory by law, and MS simply shrugging their shoulders doesn't help much either.

Unless they were totally unware of the age of the children they were sending to obvious option is an immediate ban on the prankster and some show of concern from MS.

12-year-old probably was dominating some college kid and when the college kid finally won a game he felt like teabagging that little punk.

Hopefully they wont find him-- the guy might get years in jail and the title of sex offender for life.

Funny this hasn't happened to my little brother, oh wait, we have a good mother. Good for Microsoft for not doing anything, it is the sole responsibility of the parent to know what their child it doing.

Good job kids mom, you suck as a parent.

Another lazy parent looking for someone to point a finger at.

The parental controls on the 360 can keep them from doing anything.
You don't want them to talk to anyone? it can be locked out!
don't want them adding friends? then lock that out!
don't want them getting nudie pics, or any pics for that matter? Yep, it can be locked out!
If you REALLY want control. Then watch what they're doing. I know, it's a pain in the ass. You can use the built in controls but it will require you to do such things as reading and stuff.

Hey, maybe Microsoft can put the instructions on audio book for the lazy ones.

Danight I told you not to do this!

j/k

you can send pics to users via PSN also. One guy sent me a funny picture of a dog with a rifle.. The lady should report the live user via live itself.. It has built in reporting features right? I think a report stating the person is sending my children pornographic pictures, would get a quick response.

I think phone support could have been a little more helpful, thats a PR blunder to say its not your problem. You can't prevent this from happening, but you CAN react when it happens.

"the damage is already done"

They say this in america so they can sue for some outrageous amount. no matter what it is. that only money can solve the issue now. its so easy to sue someone here that if i got hit by a car my words wouldnt be "help me!" or "tell my woman i love her!" it would be "the damage is already done!!!":D that way some money would come my way. lol but im just talking about the american mentality. it sucks i know.

I agree, but how many parents are really going to know there way around Live? I hope it doesn't come to it but I worry too much of this getting press will force outside controls rather than user use of available controls.

That's because it's not M$'s problem. Parents need to be parents and stop letting electronics and these companies be the parent. If someone has a live vision cam, you tell me how M$ can take and automatically know when someone is sending nude pics? Like someone said, the most is banned or bring the user that sent them up on charges.

Hahaha, how random.

Seriously though, I think they should ban the sender's account and fine a penalty charge in order to avoid this type of content to flow in a "gamers" network.

True. But the information is out there. Heck, I'm sure that they could call MS and they would help them set things up.

But not knowing isn't an excuse.
Honestly. It's like saying:
I don't know what it does. I'm not sure what type of effect it will have on my kid. Not completely sure if it's safe or not. But here you go little Jimmy. Have fun.
Same mentality as the parents who gave their kids lawn darts and was shocked when one ended up in someones foot after the kids had been playing alone with them.

Exactly!

And no offensise to the gay community, but Lets hope your kid turns out to be a hedrosexual one day and not some ***** fairy!

....and furthermore lets hope theyre also able to spell "heterosexual" properly. also "offense".

however, maybe you would be done good to know, MOST child predators are in fact, heterosexual.

and aids is predominant in mostly straight couples. mainly black straight females.

plus, if the parent is so concerned, then they should know better than to leave their children, who are at a young age, on a medium where they would be exposed to all kind of material. be it cutesy pictures of smurfs, or peoples genitalia.

if your kids are under 10, leave them playing arctic tale, open season or some cars game. why even allow them to play these videogames on live?

i blame the parent. its your responsibility to protect your child from threats. in the same manner you keep them from being exposed to smokers, or make sure they wear their seat belts while driving. theres always good and bad out there. be prepared to keep your spawn safe from the bad. thats all.

however thats not saying the person who sent them these pics is doing the right thing either.

Oh no! We should all cover-up our hideously deformed naked bodies!!!

How disturbed could those kids really be after seeing 'nudity' ... If anything it is just one little bump in the right direction to a 'free-thinking society'

Do we really need to fear what is under the clothing? Should we really be ashamed? Sounds to me like that mother has her own self esteem issues and is unfit to be raising children if she is so uncomfortable with the world we live it...

Truth is,
Nudity is skin
Sex is procreation
Violence is unstoppable
and why blame your problems on other people?

Besides, what does Microsoft have to do with a couple kids, who probably requested nude photos... And why would they give their multi-billion dollar **** about what the 'mother' thinks...

There are some people... They really 'grind my gears'

Blame video games!
Blame television!

no no no...

Blame YOURSELF
BLAME YOUR KIDS
BLAME SOCIETY

or learn to not blame at at, 'live and let live'... 'take it with a grain of salt'

Don't get me wrong I'm usually the one holding the pitch fork when the angry "let's blame the irresponsible parents" mob gets out... yes that's right I'm right up there in the front right behind the guy with the "Jack Thompson needs to get laid sign" anywho, while it's true that ms can't possibly control all the content that users share amongst themselves, in these cases they should really ban the guy. Regardless of the circumstances Live as far as I know isn't a dating service, so what the hell do you need to send naked pics of yourself for?

If you wanna go ahead and send them then fine, but if your dumb/perverted enough to send pics to a little kid then you deserve what's coming to you; however, I'm sure that ms is thinking that if they entertain the subject of taking action against the guy then people will start to think that it really is their (ms') job regulate what can be sent or not, which would in turn cause never ending headaches, not to mention law suits, for/against ms for the rest of eternity.

@ catenna & madonnaproject:
Let's at least try to pretend that we are not prejudice pricks eh? There's enough gay, straight, black, white, asian, latin, alien, ghostly, robotic pervs out there that we don't need to focus on just a group of them.

Last I checked the system came with instructions, if parents are too lazy to look at them they share partial blame. There are plenty of stupid Aholes in the world and you can get some real ignorant MoFo's on Live.

People I play online with that have kids set the parental controls so that they can only communicate with people on their friends list. All strangers are muted.

The kid should be banned, but the parent should also be told to set the parental controls to block this type of stuff so it wouldn't have happened in the first place.

This reminds me of a friend who ended up on the sex offenders register. He was on a bus and jokingly sent some naked pics to any bluetooth enabled phone in the area. Little did he realise one was a 12 year old girl. The girl told her dad the dad told the police and somehow the police worked out who sent it. I laughed.

Doesn't matter if they did or not, ignorance doesn't magically rid you of the crime

is freedom of speach against tthe law?

No, but sending nude pics to minors, whether solicited or not is... besides even too much freedom of speech is bad if you ask me.

i believe not but i havent signed up for live in ages, i recall a CC to verify but that was way back not sure if that still goes now, at some point the kids needed to put in a credit card and if they are traumatized by nude pics then there mother had to enter the card info in and im sure she must have read the service agreement, if you was capable enough to go set up live (the hardest thing on the dash to get setup) im sure shes seen parental controls its pretty much cleanrly visible. Parents these days are too lazy and ignorant to actually raise kids the right way, kids are only damaged by things parents stress over proporiton. my parents never threw me into a public shower but they never went crazy if i saw someone nude, ide just go eww and it would be laughed at. this is how you end up with those crazy cristian followers you see in movies.. parents overprotective in all the wrong places.

... "no mum you got it wrong, some sicko sent us this pic over xbox live... sniffles..."

I have a few questions?! First of all, did the mother delete said pictures before turning off the xbox? Because if she didn't, then couldn't Microsoft have actually done something? My second question is that if she did not delete those pictures, would Microsoft be able to view them to verify that they were infact nude pictures? I'm sure that a mother wouldn't be calling Microsoft to lie about something like that, but honestly, how many immature people are on Xbox Live? I get bad feedback and complaints filed on me just for because I'm a girl playing gory games meant for boys. Say that someone, person X (this is just a theoretical question) got mad at person Y (who was their friend and they had previously exchanged pictures that were not inappropriate) and filed a complaint against person Y claiming that those pictures were inappropriate, even though they were not. Does Microsoft assume that person X is being truthful, or are there ways that they can go look at those pictures to confirm the complaint? Just curious.
