View Full Version : MS: HD DVD may be dead, but our focus has always been Live Marketplace
According to reports, while MS has played a significant role in building up the high definition market, they are not really that concerned about how that will play out in the Xbox 360 market. Aaron Greenberg has told a website that the demise of HD DVD does not at all effect the console's position as an entertainment system. He went on to comment that just a small fraction actuall bought the HD DVD attachment and the main HD focus has always been the Live Video Marketplace.
Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, told TG Daily that although HD DVD's demise is unfortunate, it does "not at all" affect the console's position as an entertainment center.
"As we’ve long stated, we believe it is games that sell consoles and Xbox 360 continues to have the largest next-gen games library with the most exclusives and best selling games in the industry. Market data shows that HD movie playback is not a primary purchase driver for consumers buying video game consoles," said Greenberg.
He added that "only a small fraction" of Xbox 360 owners actually bought the HD DVD add-on. Microsoft's main HD focus for the Xbox 360 has always been the Xbox Live Video Marketplace, which continues to add movies that aren't available in high-def anywhere else.
However, Greenberg told us that there will not be any added focus to that service as a result of the HD DVD demise. He added that Microsoft's decision to stop supporting the format does "not at all" affect the console's value as an all-encompassing media center.
In addition to manufacturing the Xbox add-on, Microsoft also helped create the HDi technology, which powered the disc's advanced features. "Microsoft is currently looking at how the technology can be applied to other platforms," said Greenberg.

Really?? Everyone knows that MS want digital distribution rather than a type of media.
All company's would prefer digital distribution due to them having control over the security.
Even sony have started releasing some dvd's with some type of registration system on them.
Unless HD-DVD had won. Then HD-DVD would have been the next greatest thing...

Only 13gb usable space on a premium machine and late arrival of download films in Europe says they did care alot about hd-dvd and not just digital downloads.

Where do fanboys come up with their sense that someone is always on the attack? The position stated in this article is the same as it has always been even before the HD-DVD addon launched, and nowhere in the article is blu-ray mentioned.

That's fine, but then Microsoft have to open up the Video Markedplace elsewhere than just in North-America and 4 or 5 European contries. I'm waiting with my money to download HD movies, but here in Norway we can't do that (yet).

Fist off I'm not here for spelling so I could care less(If my spelling offends you don't read my post), I'm not a fanboy because I own all 3 consoles and two handhelds. The reason I made my statement because, Zeus or whomever post these headliner threads IS always making contradictory statements about Microsofts stand on Blu-RAy(1min. Sorry If you feel I misunderstood the topic.
They didn't mention Blu-ray, but they did state the demise of HD-DVD, which was caused by Blu-RAy.

Umm I never mentioned your spelling. They mentioned the demise of HD-DVD basically to reiterate that they really didn't care. I havent really seen the posts as contradictory if you actaully read the articles, Zeus headline writing skills are questionable at best, but generally MS position has been that Blu-Ray support will naturally come to Windows and on the 360 they have no plans but would be open if there was deemed to be enough demand.

While digital distribution is the way everyone is going. Bad DRM and low capacity, not user upgradeable hard drives is not the way to go about it.
Lets face a 20gb hard drive doesn't cut it nor does a 120gb $200.00 dollar dive either lol.

It's funny... Now HD-DVD has lost, they don't care, as "only a fraction of 360 users bought the HD-DVD add-on..."
I remember them marketing the HD-DVD add-on as a huge success...

that's why they don't have a standard hdd for all sku's, and a 20gig for the pro. plus they give the people who bought the arcade, the option of buying a 20gig hard drive for 20 dollars. amazing:rolleyes:

Yeah, it's not like the Marketplace didn't have tons of Digital Distribution updates WHILE they were supporting HD DVD or anything. Fanboys.

And the intelligent side of...the other hand. Microsoft HAS to do something about a better, upgradeable HDD. My 20GB HDD is almost done due to Downloads and so far, the best thing I could do is just buy an Elite since it's a whole new console with the new HDD, and only twice the price of the HDD alone. I don't mind the DRM, cause there are ways around it, not to mention that if you pay for it, it should be only your console which can use it.
