View Full Version : Pachter: 60GB Xbox 360? Make it 200GB or 500GB
In response to a rumor that a 60 GB Xbox 360 was on the cards, analyst Michael Pachter has said that the surprise to him is that the new SKU is only rumored to be 60GB. Pachter believes console manufacturers all misjudged the quantity of downloadable content there would be and that a 20GB hard drive is not sufficient. "I mean, I would think they'd introduce a 200GB or 500GB and eliminate the 20GB and make the 120GB the standard cheapie one." he said. He also believes Microsoft would like the Xbox 360 to turn into a whole media center that allows you to use your 360 as a DVR, which would challenge the PS3's stance as a media device.
"I think the console [manufacturers] all misjudged the quantity of downloadable content and the opportunity to actually download meaningful content, and so what sounded like a good idea in 2003 or 2004 in the design stage with the 20GB hard drive on the 360 was just not sufficient. Frankly, the surprise to me is that the new SKU is [purportedly] 60GB," he told GameDaily BIZ. "I mean, I would think they'd introduce a 200GB or 500GB and eliminate the 20GB and make the 120GB the standard cheapie one. I think that more is better, although I don't think most people will fill up their hard drive; but I think that as you feel you're getting close you start to be less likely to download content."
He continued, "These guys are doing a great job getting people to download levels and casual games, and even though those files are relatively small I think Microsoft would like Xbox 360 to turn into a whole media center and allow you to use your 360 as a DVR, and that would actually be a fairly compelling offering. Obviously they've already got people online so if they can turn an Internet device into more of a media device I think it gives it some competitive advantage over the PS3. And they have to respond to PS3 because that very much is becoming a media device with their winning the Blu-ray [vs. HD DVD] battle."

If they really are aiming 100 Percent towards digital downloads then thats what they need minumum. Many people argue about download speeds, but another BIG issue that many overlook is storage. Say they do go for the maximum size specified there at 500GB and lets say we only get the 720p versions for now at around say 5gb. Thats under 100 movies and nothing else stored. Yes not everyone owns a collection that large, but say if you wanted a series like lost in HD, 20 + episodes would take up a fair amount of size. However real enthusiasts that want 1080p visuals with full uncompressed audio would have a nightmare trying to store those!! my HDD at 500gb is always under strain and thats only full of 700mb avi's. Hehe.
Anyway, this is only this gen i know, and larger HDDs will be standard when and if digital downloads push for dominance. But hey, they should of just chucked a regular SATA HDD in with the 360 so they can be upgraded by the user specifically if thats what they opt for.

instead of trying to add more storage and make into a media center, why don't they focus on reducing thier 16% failure rate.
I was soo happy with my original xbox

Because they are selling double with that failure rate? Because it thakes some guys two new xboxes until they realise of the stupidity they have done?

why not just slap a 1tb drive in and be done with it, after all by the end of this console life cycle you're going to need a terabyte of storage just to hold all the patches and fixes to make the games you paid for work properly. please note this applies to the ps3 as much as the 360 since it seems software houses cant succesfuly debug a game anymore on those consoles (or at least cant be bothered to since most of the consoles will now accept buggy, incomplete games for the new higher prices)

Stupidity? Besides the fact that they have a 3 year warranty to replace systems that have RROD it says something about the great library of games if people are willing to deal with that problem.
Amazing how most Sony fans think they are smarter than everyone else cause they buy Sony products. I know plenty of people who were PS3 supporters but switched over to the 360 because the games and online capabilites were better. And while it sucks to have your system crap out on you, if you can't find something else to do for a week or two while you wait for it to get repaired you need to re-evaluate your life.

Are you retarded? Microsoft gives out a free 3 year warranty you idiot! How would they make a profit out of something free? Maybe if the person voided the warranty and moded the XBOX 360 to play bootleg games but that person is getting what he or she just deserves. I would rather buy a machine a hundred times with great games than buy one machine with shitty selection of games and frame ratre problems playing multiplatform games. Use your logic.

Its true these sub-200gb consoles as HD download centers are a joke. I already laugh at the no-brainer sub-500gb drives and I would never buy anything smaller than 1tb. And that size is barely enough for a decent collection of standard definition videos, for a similar but HD collection you'll need at least 10tb. 60gb? Its so beyond laughable I feel like crying. Is this Microsofts idea on how to fight bluray? Let people download a movie or two on a 60gb drive and we'll gain HD video marketshare?
Maybe I'm the wrong guy to talk about this. I'm usually pissed because they stopped producing 5.25" hard drives. I mean if they wouldn't we would now have some proper multi-tera drives.

I know perfectly of the 3 year warranty. But you know as well that not all the consoles are covered by it, don't you?
I never said it was stupid to buy an xbox, or that you should buy a PS3. I said it takes a guy two new consoles (I've got two personal friends like that and I know more like that over the internet) to realise they are doing something stupid, and with that I meant the fact that they have been ripped off.
We live in a would of consumerism, Microsoft knows this and has delivered.

A product that lasts only three years is piss poor, I still play my NES, FFS.

Yup, and when I go to my sisters house and my brother in laws PS3 is covered in 2 inches of dust while he plays COD4 on his 360 that he originally told me he would never buy, I re-evalute my purchase and think it was the best gaming investment for this generation of systems.
Sure the system has hardware issues, but you make it seem like your beloved Sony has never had a problem with a console before. It took them 3 tries to get the hardware issues right. The first system melted inside and had to be flipped like a burger just to get to work. The second had an incredible amount of lasers die right after the warranty ran out. I can't even play GoW on my PS2 since it wont read DL discs.
Do you actually think all those PS1&2 sales are all from different people? How many people in these forums have stated that they have bought multiple systems since they all died. I am sure there are people still on their first system. I know I am because I wont buy another since I won't ever turn it on but most people have bought a second or third either because of failure or redisign.
Get over it already, its a games system. Even with the aggravation of having to send a system back that has RROD people still go buy it because it has the best library of games and Live is worth price of admission. Just because you can't stand MS doesn't mean that the system sucks. If that was the case it wouldn't have sold close to 20mil consoles. And even with the fact that people know it had these issues it still sells hundred of thousands of units every month.

As long as your system RROD's they will replace it. That is what the warranty covers. most times if it is a launch console they will replace it regardless. My first system had its ethernet port fried when lightnening hit my house, the rest of the system worked but no online so I sent it back. It was a launch system that never had any issues. The replacement RROD'ed after a year and I sent it back and got it replaced no problem and haven't had any issues since. What problems did they run into they wouldn't replace? With the 30-40 friends I have on Live, the few that had a problem never had MS turn down the repair.

Sorry about that, ohh, and by the way, aic007 the problem with the xboxes were that one couln't read discs and the other had the internet burst. They never fixed it at Microsoft. One of them now has got rid of the 360 and bought a PS3, but he still is a Microsoft fanboy :D

No you didn't say you cant stand MS you just said people are stupid for buying the system. I qoute, "Because they are selling double with that failure rate? Because it thakes some guys two new xboxes until they realise of the stupidity they have done?"
So in your opinion people who bought an xbox and possibly had a hardware issue are idiots for continuing to support it. Aren't you the one who is offending 360 owners?
Did I make a comment about the PS3 hardware? I said that the first two systems had plenty of hardware problems and Sony fans dealt with it. I said it took 3 tries to get it right, meaning the third so far hasn't had the problems the previous systems had. That would be a compliment to the PS3.
