View Full Version : Could GTA IV have the same trouble as Bully?

Rockstar's troubles with the Xbox 360 version of Bully: Scholarship Edition has got people wondering if GTA IV will suffer the same fate. Rockstar have yet to comment on the matter but it wouldn't be good news for Microsoft who are keen to attract as many GTA IV gamers away from the Playstation to the Xbox 360 as possible.

So while we don't doubt Rockstar's integrity, we have to wonder whether any similar technical issues are only now being identified in the 360 version of GTA IV. If so, could this have any impact on the game's release date? Further more, should owners of older Xbox 360s be concerned that their consoles are going to experience problems when running new games? Will this simply mean more patch fixes or will it require a more drastic solution? Are we getting our panties in a pickle over nothing?

i think people need to chill out. Mass Effect crashed on my 360 about twice an hour. in well over 20 hours of playing Bully for the 360, it has crashed 2 times for me. As far as GTA 4, its running on a completely different engine, created by a completely different team, so lets just wait and see before spreading fud

I think XBOX 360 owners should ask for a refund.

Chill out why? You aknowledging that 2 crashes an hour or anything of the sort is perfectly fine?

Not saying GTA IV is going to crash, but after just buying a 360 and playing Lost Odyssey, the disc drive always sounds like it is beating the hell out of itself and seems to enjoy skipping every now and then. Makes me scared while playing my games sometimes. Games are still tons of fun, but I wonder always about the life of my system and I have only had it for around 2 weeks.

Maybe it isn't just these games, but the garbage DVD drive. I think I am going to pick this up for the PS3, I love the games I have so far on my 360, don't get me wrong, but a game that claims to have over 100 hours of gameplay makes me scared for my console.

So crashing once or twice an hour is ok? lol:D

two different games built by different sections of the same company?
isn't it like saying... rainbow 6 2 might suffer frame rate issues and crashes because bully does :o

surely the games being made my north and vancouver mean we shouldn't associate them together.
they're not even using the same engines.

As long as Jack Tohmpson still lives and breaths air, there will always be problems.

Doesn't bully still use Renderware anyway? More likely to be a rushed port in any sense that is causing problems.

By the same token as this story - RS table tennis isn't buggy and it uses RAGE engine just like GTA4.

Good points all around.

Been playing bully for a few hours, I don't notice any problems, certainly no crashing or lock ups.

Bully
Engine:
RenderWare (PS2)
Mad Doc Software (Wii/Xbox 360)

GTA 4
Engine:
RAGE

Two different companies, two different games, two different engines.
Stupid to link the two.

The only worrying this is the 360 dvd drive strugging to play GTA4

Mass Effect never crashed for me. Yes you are right, it is a completelly different engine, which was already tested in Table tennis, so people and fanboys should just chill.

was the rage engine used in crackdown? Since that ran OK, id presume the bully issues arent directly associated to the hardware.

the port of bully was most likely pushed out the door a few bug fixes too early.

this kind of **** happens all the time on pretty much every console/computer. its just sad to see it still happens :P

Hmm I haven't had any problems so far with Mass Effect (unless you count that space worm kicking my ass repeatedly until I figured out you had to approach it like you were playing moonbuggy in the 80's) wonder if maybe your 360's GPU is flaking out or something?

As for GTA IV I don't see any real parallels other than the Rockstar connection the engines are different the developmen teams are different...

It's pretty well-known that Mass Effect makes 360's crap out. My 360 gives me disc read errors, "put this disc in a 360" messages and leaves curious white marks on the disc, I've still played god knows how many hours of if though.

Agreed on your other comment. Different dev team, different engine...

I have an original 360 from launch - which seems to be a rarity these days - no RRoD for me so far.

Bully - 6 hours play straight - no problems at all
Mass effect - completed - no crashes at all.

Get Bully - its excellent, GTA at school - great fun.

bully was ported by a team who have mainly worked on RTS games for the pc in the past. I'm sure they are very capable of porting a game:D but from what I've read from Rockstar they ran into problems going from a debug console to older retail consoles. just one of those things that the team slipped up on.

my point is GTA IV is being worked on by the best of the best over at R*. not some second hand crew . these problems will not be seen in GTA.

I'll take your word for it, cant say I have hunted out problems for it since I havent run into any so far. I dont play marathon gaming sessions though, dont really have time so that may have something to do with it. I generally only get an hour or so here and there. Hmm come to think of it maybe thats why my launch 360 is still going strong...

Indeed. The problem was reported on the Bioware forums and MS Customer Services seem to be aware of the problem. They offered me a replacement disc, at no cost. I decided to keep my crapping out copy though, it was that damn good I put up with the crashes.
