Today D3 announced not only Xbox 360 acheivements for an upcoming game but also what are known as Entitlements for the PS3. Way back in 2006, it was revealed during an EGM podcast that Sony was interested in copying Xbox Live's achievement system but it looks as if D3 is the first publisher to let slip on the new system.

Today, D3 Publisher of America not only announced the Xbox 360 Achievements for “Dark Sector,” but also PS3 “Entitlements” for the game. Remember “Entitlements”?

Back in July 2006, an EGM podcast revealed that Sony aspired to mimic Microsoft’s addictive Achievement system, calling the various accomplishments in the game “Entitlements.” But no further information was provided. We’ve seen Achievement-type rewards in Sony’s first-party games (such as “medals” in “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune,” “Resistance: Fall of Man,” “Warhawk” and “glyphs” in “Heavenly Sword“) but they haven’t appeared in every PS3 game thus far… Though it seems that a few third-party titles are moving ahead, like “Devil May Cry 4,” which has identical Achievements for the Xbox 360 and PS3 (they’re called “accomplishments” on the PS3).

And would there be a numbered tally that adds up all these “Entitlements” across games for an overall “Entitlement score”? (”Entitlement whore” just doesn’t have the same ring to it…)

We’ve put in a request to D3 and Sony to try to find out more, and we’ll let you know as soon as we hear back.

sony made a console 10 years before ms............

They created playstation as an add on for SNES. But nintendo pulled out like a date rapist. And it was released in december 1994. Xbox saw its release in nov 2001. Which is 7 years.

Exactly, a console itself is too general for comparison, but "entitlements"? Come on...

Hmmm a 360 fanboy to be the first post on a PS3 thread, who would have guessed?

I thought that the trophies were the achievements but you guys every company copies, you think Windows is an idea of MS? Nope they copied off some other old MS I can't remember the name of... but it's the one that has Cabinets instead of Folders :P.

Imitation is a form of flattery. I just hope that it won't be called "entitlements". When I hear that, I think of an allowment or something that is deserved. I like "accomplishments" better.

Bill gates stole the idea of a GUI based operating system so I guess lets just call it even.

Edit: but they could have named it something better

As a PS3 owner and a fanboy-hater, I say: I don't care if it's ripped off, if it's good, then bring it to the systems I own please.

To be honest, achievments don't mean a thing to me. Especially stupid ones like you need to get 1000 headshots to get like 20 points or something like that.

I know so far Sony have been good, and been slowly adding many features that people have been crying out for, and that list is growing with each FW update.

HOWEVER the real reason for this system being added is so that they can say to people, hey we have the same thing too. It's not trying to be innovative, it's blatently copying, trying to reduce the reason why a person would prefer the 360 game over the PS3 game.

Sounds silly, but i know MANY people who go buy the 360 version of a game for achievment points alone, and i think such a simple feature, which offers actually nothing to the gamer in a tangible sense, has a big influence on people and Sony realise that and want to add it for that reason alone.

I know the entitlements is supposed to be familiar, but Microsoft didn't create the idea of giving awards for challenges. This is probably being created so achievement whores don't always choose the 360 version.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, entitlements is a horrible name. Entitlement implies that you are entitled to something, meaning you have a right to receive something for accomplishing something else. For it to really be an entitlement you'd have to get something in return other than a score. If they do do something other than just a score, like free games or pics or something then I hope ms copies that because that's one thing I hate about achievements. MS could easily cash in on them and give gamers something in return for racking up achievements. Even if I got some crappy arcade game every 5000 gamer points that'd make me want to play more.

Thats an awsome idea... I think it might be to get a better place in home. The better gamer you are the better your house is:p

And that class is what you call a double standard. Regardless of what you or anyone else says Live has no original features, everything is either and upgraded feature (Achievements to me and many others are upgraded High Scores, just to keep things in perspective) or adapted/assimilated from some other environments, like PC gaming. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's a bit unfair to deny other companies the right to do the exact same thing.

Well we can all agree that the name is kinda stupid. I've got some advice for the Live defenders, just think of this and others features that the PSN will get in the future as a form of flattery, as braids so rightly put it, because if you guys throw a hissy fit every single time the PSN gets a Live-like feature I regret to inform you that you'll be suffering from high blood pressure before the year is over.

damn straight, if ps3 has entitlement totals coming i would consider buying multi-platform games on ps3 instead depending on the port quality.

Did you not see this thread has a green 360 logo? nope you just want to troll a valid point.

I really don't care about "achievements" or "entitlements" but I agree that they could've come with a better name:eek:

and 8 years before them Atari made one. This argument is ridiculous, everyone copies everyone, it makes better cheaper products.

I agree the name sucks. I also believe that the points should go to something, I always thought it should give a discount on DLC for that game it you have enough achievement point for that game.

I'm all for the idea of Sony copying 'achievements' for themselves, but there are a few things wrong with this current approach:

Entitlements?
What on Earth were they thinking? That is the WRONG name for such a thing. Call them Accomplishments or Trophies or something that you EARN, not Entitlements.
Timing
These achievement knock-offs should have been in place from day one. What works about Achievements is that they are fairly consistent. Every single game has them. If they are only sometimes used, then what's the point?

everyones all for saying copy this and copy that, and the name is all wrong, this feature is still very little spoken of by sony themselves and whos to say these 'entitlements' may yet still live up to that name, and possibly work like nintendo star points. No one knows how exactly these will work yet so who knows

Yep, MS copied Apple and Apple copied Xerox. There is no original Ideas anymore that is for sure.
