View Full Version : Xbox 360 HD DVD emulator now available for free
It has been revealed that the Xbox 360 HD DVD emulator is now available as a free download on the Xbox Live Marketplace when you request a token at thisishddvd/emulator. The decision was made to make it free are that MS is commmited to 'interactivity' and giving content owners the ability to create more 'compelling entertainment experiences'.
The Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator is now available as a free download on Xbox Live Marketplace when you request a token at http://www.thisishddvd.com/emulator/.
Why is it free now?
This decision was made in light of Toshiba's recent announcement that they are discontinuing their HD DVD business. The reasons for offering the emulator for free are two-fold.
Microsoft is committed to interactivity and giving content authors the ability to create more compelling entertainment experiences. The specification for HDi was developed with significant input from studios like Warner Bros. and Disney based on scenarios they desired in the next generation format. Offering the emulator for free allows a greater audience to experiment with interactivity with little to no cost.
Second, the emulator beta program had approximately 80 participants across the industry who relied on the emulator for testing HDi content. Continued access to the emulator will assist those post houses and developers in completing their outstanding HD DVD projects.

Would this let you create your own HD-DVD format discs and burn them to a DVD for playback on the 360's internal drive?
Here are instructions (http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2008/02/19/creating-an-hd-disc-in-plain-dvds-for-free/)
Would this work?

You can develop HDi applications / videos and play them from a USB, CD or networked computer, ain't all useless if you are interested in audio/video projects...

Microsoft loved HDi and hated BDJava. They're trying to gain traction for HDi somehow.

lol... and then the next big breakthrough in 360 homebrew is an exploit found n this emulator running on the 360 that allows for anything that can run on it that can be run on a pc... As long as you have a harddrive and the proper drivers installed.
And you know what the first thing that idiots would try to install...
Vista. out of anything it will be vista. then someone builds a 360 node cluster of 200 360's, then on july 11th 2011 it becomes self aware and takes over all the communications networks :}

I seriously doubt that it would still be around by then. At least half the system would get the RROD by 2009. The rest would quickly follow. I don't think we have anything to worry about.

If i'm not mistaken it is more or less a developer thing.
It allows you to create HD-DVD content and "stream" it to your 360 from PC without having to burn it to HD-DVD media.
Quote from their website:
"Gone are the days of trial-and-error testing, thus reducing the costs associated with the HD DVD media."

I guess I'm a weenie then. I got a $20 WMC remote I was planning on getting anyway as it makes movie streaming a lot easier to navigate over using the controller. SO technically I paid $30 for the HD-DVD player which I might add makes a GREAT DVD upscaler. Plus I can't wait to get some great movies at a great clearance price.
