View Full Version : Activision considering Call Of Duty MMO

Activision CEO (and soon to be Activision Blizzard president and CEO) Bobby Kotick has said that Activision could look to Call of Duty to break into the MMO market. Kotick said Activision can now tap Blizzard talent to figure out how Activision might take Call of Duty in an MMO direction. Would you play a Call of Duty MMO?

Before closing its deal with Vivendi (which owns Sierra and Blizzard), Kotick said Activision looked at five years of data on U.S. publishers' attempts to break into the MMO market. Most resulted in failure, cancellation or low profit margins. By teaming up with Blizzard, which has proven its online mettle with World of Warcraft, he said Activision can not only pull in WoW's subscriber base to strengthen its balance sheet but also to learn from the company's veterans how to undertake new projects.

That could include tapping Blizzard talent to figure out how Activision might take Call of Duty in an MMO direction, Kotick said. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, developed by Infinity Ward, was a huge hit for Activision in 2007 and routinely appears at the top of Xbox Live's weekly list of most-played games.

if they cant fix the probs with cod4 online then i say forget it.they will just be asking for major league trouble, only offering like 80% good game with 20% disconnection probs, incorrect translations of kills.cod4 is becoming a shallow experience,i am nearly ranking to max for fourth time and it is getting boring.

sick and tired of shooting crap outta someone for them to turn around and kill me with 1 bullet that hit the air beside me.

basicly i am saying,if you cant produce a perfect game then dont bother as it costs a lot oif money here in uk for games.

As long as it is developed by Infinity Ward it is sure to be incredible.

No I would not play a COD MMO.

I don't want a Level 26 Soldier. I want a soldier with a gun that I've become really good with. MMOs thrive off the addiction to reward schemes. If they can offer that experience without having levelled characters, I'll come to the table.

But seriously, with Blizzard on board, I doubt that. I can see it now:

"You didn't tank the Chopper so now our fucking Medics are dead and have to repair at the Supply tent"

Theres a differnce between mmo and mmo rpg. You're already are looking at this incorrectly.

Dude, is there any MMO which has stood the test of time which wasn't RPG based? Its the RPG element which makes WoW successful, and with Blizzard onboard, there's a jolly good chance that it'll be RPG driven.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I'm sceptical that such a huge franchise would risk a new design approach when the tried and tested works so well.

A MMO co-op Option could be sweet, where all the crazy guys running around on your side are actual people not AI. But i just want more Modern warfare

Call of Duty 4 is Already an MMO, so they want to turn an MMO into a True MMO? So pretty much just gonna scrap the Single Player then?

An MMO that isnt an RPG are things that are desgined online only, and there is stuff you can aim for online. Theres Ranks on CoD4 witch unlocks new stuff. Only thing they could add to it would be a weapons buying system of sorts insted of start with XYZ.

An Example of a Gun game based MMO thats mega successfull. CounterStrike. Yes Counterstrike is an MMO. If CoD4 became a True MMO it would just be a counterstrike Clone, nothing more.

I doubt I'd be interested. I was interested in Planetside when I heard about it, but having an MMO be a gigantic battle is kind of relentlessly stupid. I think CoD and games like it are great for some pick up and play action. Battlefield 1942 and its followups were a great mix of large battlefields and many players. I think they struck the right balance between performance, persistence, and massiveness.

Imagine a BF1942 map where you can just kind of give up...and wander off the Battlefield for a couple miles. Then maybe walk into some other battle going on a 10 minute walk north. Or ponder the question...you have this massive persistent world...what do you do after one battle? Another battle! Does it matter that the world is persistent? Were clans and guilds unable to all log into the same maps to play together with the non-MMO CoD? What is the benefit of this MMO-ness?

I agree with the guy who said it would probably degenerate into having leveled players.. Maybe it's not a level 26 soldier, per se.. but the point is: the game will be a timesink. People who play longer will not only be (presumably) better at it, but they'll be more powerful due to equipment and "rank".. The reward of leetness to time is one of the reasons the subscription model works. If you could play the game for a year and still be owned by people signing up who've only been on for a week, where is your incentive to pay $15 a month for that kind of humiliation?

You have got to be kidding me..

Leveling is the easiest part of an MMORPG.....

you would make a valid point in saying you don't want to raid.. But I have a feeling you havent ever played an mmo..

Oh sorry, let me help him out. Yeah, he didn't mean level 26..

He meant "Hi, I'm a level 100 soldier, with
[Joey's M1 Garand],
[Bulletproof Vest of the Panzer],
[Steel Toe Shitkickers],
[Commendant's Star of Precision], and
[Sector 18 key] (requires Revered faction with US Army Intel)."

And of course, to get revered with the USAI, you have to kill like 4000 nazi footsoldiers, and 1500 Gestapo agents, and 500 Kriegsmarshalls, which takes about 3 weeks of mind numbing grinding.

Then after that, you can go on instanced "special ops" for your 2% chance of getting your phat loot, which, once you obtain it after 4 months of relentless raiding, you will now have a distinct advantage over people who are exceedingly good at reflex games and FPS's, but do not have the time to dump these mindless within mindless activities.

bam! Thanks mate. Exactly that :)

And yeah, I WoW'd for a year or two, 60'd and raided. But then, who hasn't these days? I think my argument has been represented more eloquently in others' previous posts, so I'll leave it at that.

war war war and more mindless war. thats what we need. not thought provoking games like frontlines. but utter propoganda puishing junk like call of duty, meda of honour, soldier of fortune, and who knows how many war games.

sure call of duty is a fun game. but do you really want to play a game where you start off as an army intern, then build your characters career up....and then what? win war after war after war after war untill your character becomes....uh....a fascist dictator?

no thanks. cod4 was a good thing. like with cod2 they did something good then killed it with cod3. theyre doing the same with cod5. maybe the next one will be modern again apart from the trite tried and tested world war garbage.

They are too late, there is already going to be a CoD like MMO and it is called EndWar. While it won't be a RPG the battlefields, as well as who controls what areas, will change based on how the various sides did the previous day so the world is persistant, unlike CoD.

WoW Expansion: "Call Of Duty; Nazi Nut Munchers"

I like the idea of single player campaign having like 30 players working together, but until Broadband becomes 1 giga-bit standard there'd be so much lag and Bs. There'd be so much quality loss (Graphics, animations etc.), and I really can't see a CoD MMORPG working because there are already alot of mind numbing, life eating games out there.

But then again, we don't really know if it'll work till it comes out.

Would be cool if it was like an Ongoing War! So when you got back online, the battle would be WAY different! That would be pretty Sweet!

Only way it would work is if it was like a massive battlefield 2, and like WoW you chose Opfor or Marines and fight to keep control of towns, getting experience for capturing towns or killing enemies and unlocking guns every time you get promoted, they could even have squadrons instead of clans. It would HAVE to be purely simple fps PVP for it to work even the slightest. I dont know about you, but the idea of storming a town with a bunch of mates with m16s would be soo much fun.
