24 Feb 2008: Long time, no see Although we haven't posted any news in the last 2 years, we have silently continued our work keeping the kernel patches up to date. With the latest 2.6.24 (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gc-linux/linux-2.6.24-gc.patch.gz) release we have added support for the USB Gecko (http://www.usbgecko.com/faq.htm) adapter as a console and terminal, so you can now logon into your gc-linux distro using minicom or HyperTerminal (TM). And last but not least, we have finally run natively Linux on the Nintendo Wii through Team Tweezers' twilight-hack (http://wiibrew.org/index.php?title=Twilight_Hack). We have released a small usbgecko-enabled Proof of Concept (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gc-linux/wii-linux-PoC-0.1.tgz) mini-distro to prove it. Did I say have fun? :)

Rejoice!

but, my big question is, what good does wii linux (or can we call it Wiinux?) do for us? is it going to be like XB1 where the unleashx or the evox or something along those lines? where we boot the wii up into the second OS (linux) and still have all the same wii functions and more? is this your hope? or am i completely off target here? is it just like every other linux guy (not that i'm saying this is bad, i'm all about tinkering and hacking) and you just want to put linux on anything with a processor? again i'm not busting balls, the actual act of putting non native OS on another machine is quite an accomplishment, so kudos to you. i beg the question to where from here? what are your plans or the goals of this project?
thanks!

It will most likely make it easier to dump Wii DVD's using the linux terminal disc dump command and it will give us more knowlage of the hardware used.

that sure beats the hell out of acquiring one of those LG drives. so when you say wii dump, you mean like how the xbox1 could do with the copy game util?

To do that you would need more storage than the Wii has built in.

why would you want to run win98? and that whole disc dump thing, i guess i should clarify the question. i have an external lacie, i'd assume you could plug the ExtHDD into the back of the wii and then do the dump, well i'm guessing that's how you'd do it, correct?

its so expandable. You can do so much with windows 98. Wii could be like a computer.

win98 was nice, i'll give you that, but why not 2000, or xp or server 2003? or macosx? i realize the hardware issue with the mac....but what i'm saying is this. 98 is expandable but limited due to upgrades in os and technology....xp would seem more usable to me. i don't know. i'm just saying.

i can agree here. i love my psp like a appendage. that thing is never left at home. cfw is where it's at. if they could improve the look feel or make it more like the psp...then we'd be in some good company.

Wiis not technically capable of running windows Xp. The requirements are much higher than 98s. Maybe windows 2000 but i dont think there anyway to run windows xp on wii and if you could it would run like crap.
Unless you can have a complete port with no wiilinux involved or overclock the wiis hardware..
Anyway windows 98 runs great on xbox.

I wonder how wii would hold up. Btw anyone know what would happen if you tried to boot a starcraft iso or w/e iso in a windows thats running on a xbox. Could you aculy play pc games on a emulated windows thats running on a xbox or a wii?.

Very nice! First thing I thought of was external HDD over the wii USB ports. Finally give those badboys a reason to be there :D

Wii could be an awsome computer.
Play emulators
play old pc games with wiimote starcraft diablo ect
Browse the net with a complete web browser
Download music and videos.
downloading torrents
flash games.
It may be a little slow with some of the sugestion but i think it would be way worth it.

USB Hard drive support? Im sure if they can get linux to run, they might be able to support external hard drives.

Yea and thats y modders put 160-300GB hardrives into there system. If worst comes to worse we could always just use wiis sd card slot with an 8GB card.
