View Full Version : Games from other regions can cause detection in the future ?

Something I have been wondering about for a couple of weeks now.

Most (if not all) modchips allow playing out-of-region backups.
Ok, there is of course the compatibility chart, but aside from that, it works.

Now, the chip itself is theoretically undetectable by Nintendo. Great.

Common side-effect of the out-of-region backups is the double channels. No probs, most people say, just move them to another page and you won't see them.

However, I can't shake the thought that Nintendo *can* see this when you're online. What's to stop them from doing a query of the channels on your Wii ?
If they can (and will in the future), then they'll put 1 and 1 together : double channels is only possible when you have a region override. Region override is only possible when you have a modchip. You have a modchip..

Any validity to my ramblings ? :)

Very interesting theory....Mmmmm

Just to add on your possible detection methods from the big N, I have also been pondering on ways that the big N could find out.

There is two possible methods that stand out for me;

1st possible method could be to scan your save games when connected to the net, for example, if you have PAL modded Wii and play a US Wii game on your PAL system when you save, it somewhat does an encryption stamp on your save games to say what region the game is, Big N then scans your save games, finds the encryption stamp and bans you from online or even worse, somehow disables the Wii all together.
Now this method can be effective for PAL users, I'm not quiet sure how the region works for PAL countries? is it region locked for each country in PAL the game is released in? If so, Big N can somehow detect in the save game what country that game is released in, for example, if I have a PAL modded Wii and live in Australia, a Wii game in europe gets released way before Australian's do, play the game and save, Big N can check the encryption stamp and ban. However you can by pass this by not saving, but I noticed there is some games that forces you to save.

2nd possible method is by checking your "Today's Accomplishments" in your Wii message board, this message cannot be deleted or altered, so every single game you play will have an encryption stamped in that message, again via region, just like in method 1, big N can check this and ban you.

I'm sure there is a few or alot of us out there that have thought about the above methods. But If done correctly these methods could work, not just for Wii but for other consoles and upcoming consoles as well.

I'm also sure big N has probably thought about this already, and who knows, they may have already implemented it long ago, and just waiting to collect enought info, and like M$, massive ban or disable the Will altogether.

I might be shooting myself in the foot with these methods, you never know, they might take it on board.

However, there is a slight problem with the above methods. it will not work if you are playing backups of your own region games :) so it's a partial method :)

Thanks for listening

How about your warranty ? Banned = no more free repair.. (see what's happening with the XBOX360 now, people that are banned cannot get their consoles fixed. Granted, the Wii has a much lower failure rate, but nevertheless.. )
