does anyone know where to get a detailed guide on the serial mod that lets you hook up a serial port to the wii then just load custom firmware via a serial cable to boot a backup?

Here is a guide courtesy of Dipswitch for external mod chip install, this obviously works best with a D2A or D2B drive chip. Along with the serial pin assignment that I used for my setup with cut legs. Only thing I did different was that I modded my Wii cover and installed the serial connector on the back.

What I think you really want is the serial setup that let's you
connect the wii to your computer, right? The instructions for the
setup can be located here http://xoopsforge.com/modules/planet/view.article.php/10417

The setup isn't difficult but the problem is that new games like smg and ssbb won't
work with this setup because the code is a little old.

I would recommend that instead of setting up serial mod you should install a modchip
such as open wii.

I give you this information because I currently have the serial wii mod that connects
to my PC. I use WabModCheap's loader for the games but it will no longer work with
the newer games because of the added protection. That's why I've decided to install
openwii chip.

Let me know if you have any questions.
