View Full Version : Wiikey going a bit odd

Hi, my wiikey has recently gone very odd indeed. Everything worked perfectly up until recently when it started to stop playing backups. (I originally blamed this on the 1.9g SMG fix) Applying the recovery disc worked each time (which reset it at 1.9b) and I was back in action.
Now I'm at the stage where half the time it doesn't recognize a disc, it rarely recognizes GCOS games. Despite using the recovery disc...
What could the problem be? Is the wiikey on the way out? SHould I attempt resoldering? SHould I get a lens cleaner? Or should I just plump for a new modchip?
Whats best? Wiinja deluxe or Cyclowiz? I want a modchip that will allow me to play all backups (including SMG). It should also be able to play GCOS gamecube discs.
And can you recommend somewhere in the UK to buy one from?
Cheers guys!

Have you tried reducing the read speed with the config disc. Sounds like a dodgy install to me though.

you should get someone to check yer soldering I'd say first.. Cyclowiz is hard to comeby I think nowadays. But read thru the various smash brothers threads to see what chips can load that to see what's best I suppose if you do need to replace it.
Mind you that it could also be media/burner related

I'm not convinced its the media/burner. Everything I have burned had worked perfectly until recently when I applied the SMG 1.9g hotfix. That worked great for a while, until one day, no backups would work. I put the recovery disc in (which put me back at 1.9b) and everything worked again. Updated to to 1.9g, worked for a while and then again nothing would work.
This cycle was repeated for a while until recently as I say, half the games don't show up in the disc channel, rarely GCOS games will show up.
Thats why I think the wiikey is on the way out. Now it could be a problem with the install that I made; but it has worked great for a while. But maybe it needs resoldering?
I'm tempted to buy a wiinja deluxe, and then at least I have 2 modchips to play around with to try and get it working. Good idea?

Yeah must be something 1.9G does differently, but we don't know what.. perhaps it puts more strain on the solder quality? who knows.. good luck!
I'm not sure about your problem, but does the type of disc affect the Wii laser? I may be talking rubbish but I've read a few posts regarding the Wii not playing backup's after a certain period of time. Could the type of media put a strain on the laser? I know a few years ago on my old Xbox, it stopped reading backup discs and would only play originals.

Well, that is a worry, but what can you do? I've ordered a wiinja deluxe, and I'll see how I go from there. If it the laser then I've waste some money, and I guess I'll need to read up on how to replace the laser, if indeed you can!
