View Full Version : Homebrew Pong running in Wii mode
Just a few days ago, we caught whiff of the Zelda: Twilight Princess exploit for Wii which opened up the possibility to boot homebrew in Wii mode through a buffer overflow method. Now homebrew developer Auby has extended this hack to load an ELF version of his PONG game which runs in Wii mode.

that's pretty cool
hopefully in the future it won't take so long to load such a small (i'm assuming...since the controls don't even work...) program

I wonder if they can unlock 720p once the firmware is hacked.

Video only loads half way...
Does someone have a youtube link (or can upload it to youtube)?
Does he have the ELF file available to download?

you can get the exploit in the previous thread, and why would you want to run pong w/o controls?

The video that wouldnt load had a better framerate than that :mad:And the original video that I uploaded had better framerate than that. I blame YouTube. I will try to get a better quality version up

No, this is Wii homebrew, and the wii has an SD card slot

There you go, much better quality.

Actually, that's not true. If you look at Auby's blog he states:
Current work in progress have made it possible to run ELF files from an SD card inserted in the GC card slot, and this is the result:
(before mentioned video)
It's just my old Pong demo written for GameCube a long time ago. Controls doesn't work yet, and there are more to fix before a release, but at least things are moving forward.
At least this is another way to load Gamecube homebrew in Wii Mode but it makes you wonder if he's still using the old firmware with this hack or if the newer hacks have any affect to what he's doing.

You can't. The exploited file goes on the Wii SD, but it loads files from the GC slot.

You copy the Wii gamesave from your PC and upload it your Wii through the built in SD slot.
The actual Pong file in this video resides on an SD card through the SDGecko adapter. You can see at the end of the Twilight hack that it shows "Slot A" and "Slot B" one of which detects a Gecko in the slot A.
I have a Gecko and when you have it in at the time of the hack, it says "detected" like in this video instead of "not detected" like in the original video just showing the hack.

This is excellent progress ;)
Roll on all those emulators in wii mode

Emulators in GCN mode run well enough and I doubt the extra horsepower of the Wii will have much effect. This is mostly for things that'll make use of the Wiimote. Hopefully, some dumbass won't ruin this by creating an ISO loader.

Its not about the horse power but about the memory the wii have, and whats wrong about a iso loader, you already can boot backups so it can't go any worse then it already is.

When you have a softmod method of running backups, it's nothing but trouble. Just look at the PSP scene, I'm pretty sure they have the highest number of pirates per capita of all the now gens.
Also, soft modders trying to run ISOs flood forums with the dumbest questions IMO (I'll probably get flamed or something for that), but seriously how many of you have never been annoyed by the "What's an ISO? How do I play a .r01 file?, OK, I'm a noob gimme step by step instuctions to do this" type topics. Also, let's face it a lot of 12 year olds own a Wii and have the internet and they're usually the ones that make those kinds of topics.

LOL The best one is "How do I use this file I downloaded, its only 19K I do not think it is the whole DVD file" (When they in fact downloaded some torrent file)

.
I would have to disagree - since the NDS has more worldwide sales and a R4 type card practically comes complete @ $50 it would have to be NDS.
Aswell as the game roms being a fraction of the size of psp game roms. Even dial up users can get them:D
However i do agree on the point you made with the post. Softmods may work with portable game systems to increase unit sales, home consoles suffer from lack of interest from developers to provide quality games, if sales are bad. ps3 perfect example - too many supposed exclusives are now multiplatform.
