Can anyone tell me what size adaptor I need for the Hitachi TSOP, and what chip type it is.

Thanks.

The chip in the hitachi drive should be an SST 39VF020 (I got a willem not so long ago for dumping the contents of a pesky 040 chip I have here.)

Cheers guys...I fancied getting one just to have a play....Ive not messed around with eproms since the ps1 days with a pic chip programmer.

Does the Willem software simply pull off a hex file just like toolbox etc does ?

By "just like", I mean is it the exact same file that gets extracted, or is there more to it ?

it will just extract the orig.bin like it would be done when say hascking another type of hitachi drive.the only difference is that if you look in the buffer you will see that the orig.bin is all opened up like it had been opened with hexworkshop.

all you do is save it.

then you got your .bin, the same as the orig.bin would look like for say a hitachi78 after extracting with fw toolbox.

then use fw toolbox to do all the other work.

just be carefull when you pull the chip,so you dont break any legs on the chip.

Cheers, yer a good un.

I've not yet got one to do, but I thought I might take a punt on buying a bricked one off ebay some time. Ideally a 79, as I want to have another go at the epoxy removal...my first attempt wasnt that successful.

then buy a pyropen.

the hot air attachment works a treat.this is realy a top notch piece of kit for desolderinmg these chips and excellent for epoxy removal.buy a hobby knife set off ebay just a few quid and your away.

solutions and stuff are messy as hell to work with.

Ive got one of these
http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/level5/module.jsp?moduleId=cpc/440010.xml
Which does a similar job.

Problem is, I was spooked with applying so much heat to the board so didnt use it directly. Instead I used it to heat up the knife itself and cut off small pieces of epoxy at a time. Problem was, it was leaving small amounts behind, which would have made soldering very difficult, and when I actualy watched a video of someone using a heat gun, and I saw just how surprisingly resiliant the board is, it was too late for me. I probably could have done it, but I figured it was prudent to return it in a fully working state and put it down to experience.
