View Full Version : NPD 2007 console sales in nice easy to read graph format
Gaming website 'Next-Gen' has gone to the trouble of uploading the NPD 2007 monthly game console sales totals in a nice easy to read graph format as denoted below. As you can see the Wii only 'lost' one month narrowly to the Xbox 360.

so basically the wii is selling around 1/3 more than the 360 most months and the 360 is selling roughly 1/3 more than the PS3, except for the 5 months leading to christmas when it is more like double - which is weird as it was lower in price then. According to this sales charts.
Strange as most people on this forum talk of the PS3 "catching the 360 up" - it would seem that in sales figures that the gap is getting bigger. To be honest once you have millions of console out there then your market is established - the great ps3 vs 360 debate isnt like blue ray vs HD - there doesnt actually have to be a market "winner" that destroys the other format and removes it from existance. There are certain games makers who will only produce for sony so its good to have both doing well. The onyl down side to competion is the flame wars that exist on the forums....erm atari 2600 ROXXXX.

It's amazing to see how Nintendo and Microsoft managed to ramp up manufacturing capacity for the holiday season. If Nintendo has the same manufacturing capacity in September that they had in November, there's no way the XBOX 360 would have outsold it that month (when Halo 3 was released).
I wouldn't say that Sony ramped up manufacturing, because there are still 80GB and 60GB models in stores, and Sony no longer manufactures them (though there are millions in the distribution system).

You have to remember when talking about the ps3 catching up these numbers only show us sales so its easy to see that the 360 is kicking ass here. This is microsofts bread and butter area. Though the ps3 did leaps and bounds at the end of the year which is nice to see. THe article is pretty good, even says that for the month of april the gba outsold the ps3.
Oh and damn the ps2 sold 4 million systems in 07 crazy sony crazy. All in all a huge year for video games. Be interesting to see what happens this year with more price cuts its gonna be a fierce year. 08 is the year sony has to prove themselves and microsfot needs to do just enough to show they are still in it.

Its numbers like those that suggest sony wont have a choice and will have to drop price again. Microsoft is expected to and sony wont have any choice. If sony cant get out of third place or at least rival the xbox 360 for second, we can flush that 10 year plan stuff and start expecting ps4 talks.

i'm gettign abit fed up of all the xbox360 sales showing USA results only. PS3 outsold the 360 in its 1st year, PS3 outside of USA is selling more per month in most countires than the 360. Xbox360 has sold less in 2nd year than its launch year. PS3 doing well seeing it hasn't even got one single game of its major inhouse games out yet whilst we have already seen the 360 with its Halo3 done and dusted. 360may have the lead on SOny but you'd be a fool to think they will stay that way when the competition is doing fairly well with nothing much to speak of yet!

Im not sure about worldwide 360 sales but if you read the article it shows that 360 in america more then doubled last year. I agree with you that the ps3 is doing well overall worldwide and is gaining ground. THough the sony brand name(video game wise not getting into the overall bs) is stronger then 360. The fan base for sony is huge and it was expected even without strong games they would do fairly well. I would find it hard to beleive that anyone doesnt think that sony will take 2nd place its a matter of will they eventually crush the 360 and soar past it or just take a couple million lead. If the ps3 doesnt soar past 360 this generation, even for getting 3rd Microsoft will have done a great job of taking part of the 100+million ps2 generation away from sony. Especially with the attachment rate the 360 obtains.
Either way sony will more then likly release a few big games this year even if some of them get delayed so 08 is their year. They stumbled at first but have a strong lineup this year. Still they need to do better in america, they have the games this year that should attract more gamers in the states. Japan is theirs if you dont count nintendo and europe is a mess with ps3 dominating some and 360 doing well in others. In the end guys who cares your gonna see great games on all platforms this gen because its not dominated by just one system(debatable about the wii, Im a big wii suporter but large install base of people that dont buy games) means greater competition for your dollar and in the end the consumer should win. Think about it pricecuts have come faster then they normally do and if things are right another batch shouldnt be to far off.
So fanboys all around step off and enjoy a very competive and interesting generation.

Prove it with documented facts, or stop being delusional. The PS3 is getting slaughtered out there, and rightly so.
And I think that the most telling thing is not number of consoles sold, rather, the attach rate is most important. A vast number of people are buying PS3 simply as a cheap(er) Blu-ray player, not as a console. So look at attach rates for PS3, 360 and Wii. My understanding is that the 360 is demolishing both other consoles.

Once again you aint got a clue, and your understanding in software is wrong too as for the past 2 months Nintendo has been top dog in software for the home console.
But give me a little while and i will start pulling up numbers for you.
Damnit i have to do this again...

Dont bother, because people fxck numbers allt he time so save your fingers and your time.
I dont understand how poeple are seeing the facts here. 360 isnt getting slaughtered worldwide. Though it is getting slughtered in Japan, Spain and I beleive Germany oh yeah France(with Australia ps3 being sold faster). The 360 is just doing fantastic in america and real good in the uk while doing modest elsewhere outside of japan. The ps3 has started the trend of closing the gap, but not at breakneck speeds like some fanboys would like you to beleive. Though on the other side IMO I doubt it will take the ps3 that long into 09 for it to beat out the 360. So the other fanboys better get a new argument unless we find out that the ps3 will become self aware and start launching nukes I doubt the 360 will continue to be the 2nd place champ that it currently is.
The guy was right witht he attach rate of the 360 being higher on average but with a ton of nintendo everything scattering the list. In fact in DEC NPD numebrs 20 wii games in top 100(5 being from nintendo) and 18 360 games being in the top 100. That is a fact I dont have the source but go Fxck yourself if you doubt me(read it on a site but Matt Cass. from wii ign said it in his podcast) Im jsut having fun. I have no interest in what console wins just happy that nintendo is being shown in a more favorable light this gen.
360 fanboys can use any argument you want, (Im a big fan of the system) but you have to be stupid if you thing Sony cant take second based on the fact that it will sell like crazy in japan specifically when say GT5, FFXIII or MGS4 comes out. It would be differnt if say ps3 would never sell in america but with the format war basicly over people will liekly buy ps3. While its true that they use them for blueray players you have no proof really that its all they use it for.
Besides a sale is a sale. If we were to nitpick over every little detail of every system you would find many things along the way that bloat a systems numbers.

Not sure how that translates to English, but I'll try and respond anyway:
Which part of the chart in the article do you not understand? Here's a tip - if a console X is outselling console Y, month after month after month all the way through 2007, then console X has sold more consoles in that 12 month period than console Y.
The Xbox 360, in 2007, has consistently sold above the PS3.
And again, attach rates on the PS3 are absolutely appalling. I recall the attach rate on the 360 AT LAUNCH was somewhere around the 3-4 games mark - incredible really (the Wii and the PS3 did not match this, not even close).
People buy the Wii as a casual console for party games (I own one).
People buy the 360 for more serious gaming and HD material (I own one).
People buy the PS3 for Blu-Ray ability and out of sheer, blind fanboyism. (I'd buy one if they'd release a backwards compatible one, with Dualshock, in Australia).

Still claiming the 360 is winning ? Still using the US only figures to show it?
Yes and Yes.
We all know the PS3 is getting beaten in the US. The rest of the world and overall...................lately the ps3 is outselling the 360.
Simple fact of the matter is Microsofts lead, which by all accounts is not a lead as the Wii is pummeling both, is slowly being eroded by the PS3.
Globally current sales indicate the following
1st WII
2nd PS3
3rd Xbox 360
I wonder how many of the units sales from MS are actually still functioning ?
You can take 20% off the 360 hardware sales figures as they have probably all bloody packed up.

Please please PLEASE try and understand what i am saying, i get ALL the charts every month, i pay to actually get them so i know what the hell im talking about!
Yes it IS true that the 360 beat the PS3 in December thanks to there massive number in America, but for a few months running before that the PS3 was beating the 360 in sales CONSTANTLY WORLDWIDE, not in America alone, you see thats what people dont seem to understand, they look at Americas numbers and use them as the gospal, but people who know what they are doing know that you have to look Worldwide to see the REAL numbers.
Also the attach rate for games, the 360 was running away with this but just like the PS2 last gen the Wii has now taken the lead from the 360 and is now beating the 360 in software sales, and as i checked over the current sales so far from January then the wii is b1tch-slapping the 360 this month worldwide again, but i wont know fully until feburary but it looks like the wii is now number 1 in the home console business and in attach rates too, hard to take 360 fans but thats the way it goes.

utter crap, i have both and it doesn't make me a fanboy
also i suggest seeing your from Australia and you seem to be quoting USA figures rather than worldwide that you read this
http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=24295
and its not just Australia - Spain, France also have PS3 ahead or gaining very rapidly on xbox360. As the games come this year for the PS3 i will see this becomming more and more a trend. I salute MS for what they have done so don't get me wrong but can they substain the momentum now that their major franchise has come and gone?. No doubt other games like GOW2,ect,ect but hardware sales are slowing for sure whilst PS3 still has even really started.
Also the noise of the damm console and hardware reliability is slowly taking its toll on MS, 3yr warrenty or not. Ms have done no favours here but i sure hope they have learnt a valuable lesson
