Despite gaining momentum towards the latter part of 2007, the DS still managed to sell almost as many units as the PS3 did all year in just the month of December. In terms of total lifetime sales, the Xbox 360 is still comfortably beating the Wii in the U.S. market as the following chart compiled by IGN shows.

What did they expect? PS3 no games and cost 3-4 time as much as the Ninitendo DS Lite and its handheld is to carry around to play. If PS3 is priced the same as the DS Lite I would buy 2 PS3, 1 for the living room and 1 for the bedroom to run ubuntu on it.:D

Exactly, the PS3 came out in Europe in March. Last year they also had price reductions and cheap models for the consumer.

It will defenetly have a better year this year. Sony have got the console sorted, improving on its free services and getting the games it needs so I am looking forward to the PS3 this year!

It's a US only comparison of sales.

despite the useless console vs handheld comparison its still nice to see this. the DS while a handheld is a handheld that is basically hackable outside the box, several years old and ancient by handheld standards, and yet still outsells anything in the video game market several times over. Now here is the funnier part, the DS alone outsold both the ps3 and psp's combined monthly and lifetime sales by a nice lead. and it almost took out all 3 playstation brand systems in dec. Sony is very lucky they have the Ps2 to save their arses from even more numerical disasters.

Given 360 LTD sales in US (and the time taken to get them) vs the Wii LTD sales in US (and the time taken to get them) I can only conclude that the poster doesn't understand the word 'comfortably'... unless he meant to say the Wii is comfortably closing that gap and will exceed 360 sales by the end of 2008 in US.

Nintendo pretty much has the winning strategy, they took their DS and made it into a console (Wii) and just like the DS its sales will be huge and soon everyone will own 2, colors will be relased and those will be purchased aswell. Nintendo will always go down in history as being able to sell their systems despite crappy 3rd party games several times to each gamer and always make money, all they needed was a little inovative feature in each to make them stand out. and touch scheme/motion sensing is the best control scheme around, so easy and common sense that ANYONE can play it.

I second that statement... what is the point of comparing handheld sales to nextgen console sales?

try comparing the PSP to DS.. duh! and we know that Nintendo has owned the handheld market for many years so this is not even news anyway.. Sony is the only company that has ever put a dent is Nintendos handheld market...
and MS cant make a hand held cuz it would be too many lawsuits for burned hands due to it overheating.. heehee !

Love the way MC always skews the info to show US sales where the 360 is concerned.

Last time i checked the consoles were also on sale in the rest of the world.

By any standards, comparing DS sales to the PS3 is flawed:)

he hasnt skewed anything the chart and his own statement planely mention in black and white that this is US sales. to skew you have to practically lie. well if you want to be fair the DS is kicking the pants left and right out of the psp and BOTH are handheld systems.

DS is playable by anyone anywhere out of the 2000 games there is 1 game ATLEAST probably 100 games atleast that someone would like... it's like saying you don't like a game on the NES, SNES or PS2... it's impossible.... what's amazing is that the DS is still selling.... I don't see how it sold this good for the last year or two... it's amazing...
