have recently upgraded my psp to 3.71 m33-2, the problem was that when I originally tried to upgrade the firemware from 3.71 there was a problem with some files on the memory disk. I backed up the original firmware but I don't think it was done properly as one of the file on the memory disk was damaged. My PSP was bricked, I had to unbrick using the undamaged files disk.

I manged to upgrade to 3.71 m33-2 now but I was wondering whether I should have bakced up the original firmware again as the first attemp was failed. It would be nice to have the original firmware, just in case.

you can always download any firmware whenever you like, but you cant always backup the crucial parts of the psp.
Do a backup now as its all working and if you need to install the original firmware later just use DCv3 and a pandora battery.

If I backup now will it backup the current 3.71 M33-2 or the orginal 3.71? As far I can understand, it appears to me that the original firmware is gone.

I'm not quite sure why you want to backup the firmware? You can always download the different official versions from 3.80 back to 1.0 from sites like QJ or PSP-Hacks.

Way more important would be to backup the NAND of your PSP with DCv3 and maybe additional (just to be on the safe side) the keys of your PSP with IDStorageManager.

I thought firmware and NAND were the same thing:o

Where do I get DCv3 and IDStorageManager? I dumped the NAND on the memory disk with the datel tool battery, I guess this is not enough.

IIRC the Datel battery has Pandora on it, so that NAND backup should be good.

The only thing you should not forget is to backup the NAND from time to time, a good opportunity is to make a backup always before installing a new CFW.

Can someone please explain what NAND is?

NAND Flash memory - The kind of technology employed on the PSP flashrom and memory sticks. Here it refers to a RAW dump of the contents of the PSP internal flash memory. It contains the boot loader, the ID storage and all flashX partitions on a single dumped file.

Flash0 - One of the segments of the internal PSP flashrom, where the OS files are installed.
Flash1 - Another segment, used to store settings and user data (themes, wallpaper and system settings/network connections)
Flash2/Flash3 - Store certificate files for DRM protections (PS3 Remote play, PS Store PS1 and PSP games)

ID Storage - Stores hardware information and physical settings for the UMD drive, PSP region and system defaults. It is never modified by OFW and it's the major reason why you should backup you PSP data. You can take them out of the full backed up "NAND" image or from the Chilly Wily ID Storage manager keys backup.

While the Chilly Willy IDSMNGR method is useful, just saving a working dump of the PSP NAND Flashrom as it is now is enough to keep a snapshot of how your PSP is right now. Every setting will be preserved, as they are in the instant you took the backup. Think of it as a emulator savestate and you will understand what it is.
