My sisters friend at her work is getting a nintendo wii for christmas and wants me to install a modchip in it for her. I installed a modchip in my wii which was bought almost a full year ago now. I used a wiikey which was easy to install. Well I looked on this forum and it appears that nintendo has made some new revisions to the wii to make it harder to mod. My question is there anyway for my sisters friend to tell if she got one of the d2c kinds without having to crack open the case. Also if it is a d2c do i have to you a d2ckey chip because i looked at the instructions and it looks a lot more difficult to install than the wiikey i installed. Also when i installed the wiikey that was my first time ever soldering anything so this d2ckey chip looks like its out of my league.

If it's a new console it's going to be a D2C. Somewhere there is a site where you can input the serial number and find out (but I can't find the link right now).
That being the case, only working option I know of is the D2Ckey, and it's a right pain to install unless you're in the business and have experience. I just fit one to my Wii tonight, took 5 hours! (mainly cos I have never done it before and it took a while to get the hang of it). The D2Ckey works fine and 'backups' are recognised and play OK (burned a no-name DVD at 16x and it still seems happy with it even tho that's not recommended). I'm not in a rush to do the soldering job again any time soon...

Flex PCB is an "easier" solder method for the 31 wire D2Ckey. Instead of soldering wires it's a soft PCB that lays around the drive chip on one side, and the D2Ckey on the other, and you solder directly to it instead of dealing with 31 wires. If you don't know what a PCB is, then wikipedia it.

Like the man said... but beware - it makes installation easier and quicker for an experienced installer, but if you screw up (like make a messy solder bridge between pins on the chip) it's then much more difficult to clean up. With wires you can just remove a couple and wick up the excess solder, you can't do that with the flexpcb.
