View Full Version : PS3 RSX Access through Linux videos - step closer to homebrew
Here are 2 video recorded attempts of accessing the PS3's nvidia RSX through Linux to hopefully give users the joy of playing homebrew. The videos show how close hackers have come to opening up the PS3 and the RSX was accessed via a loophole in the PS3's hypervisor which allows small code to be processed.

This isn't really a step closer to homebrew, it's a step closer to using the RSX fully through Linux.

I envy you PS3 people if this was done without opening your PS3. Half of the reason I bought a psp was because it was modifiable via software, maybe I'll get a PS3 once it reaches $200. Damn you 360!!!!

I think you might be right because you have to be at the dashboard to play PS3 games.... But if we got around the hypervisor maybe we could edit the Bios file.... I am probably wrong though..

OMG I knew this would give pirates hopes for warez on the PS3 :')

You're missing the big picture. Under linux you'll get emulators, games, media players, everything you could need out of homebrew, and with GPU access would work just as well. What more could you want? Remembering, of course, that homebrew and piracy are two very different things.

heh
360s hypervisor has been hacked for like what a year now? see much homebrew? nope
this isnt even a full hypervisor hack. all this is letting you do is put 3d graphics on ur ps3
i wonder how many of these videos we'll see now on youtube or something.
seems to me ps3 owners have nothing better to do then to mess around with linux and draw 2d/3d graphics.
ill bet this is still in a sandbox mode of some sort

Don't be so dumb.
This will when completed allow full 3d access in linux enabling the ps3 to run a range of graphics intensive emulators and media players including xbmclinux.
as well as other apps any homebrewer might need.
So yes, much better than xbox linux without hardware mods.

All I want is the ability to store and run my games off the PS3 hard drive. I'm not talking about pirating them as I'm not going to download a 25gb game and I sure a heck can't burn a Blu-Ray game. I just want to store the ones I buy on the hard drive so it's easier to play them in my truck. Granted I will need a huge drive but I am willing to pick up a 500gb or 750gb one I'm sure that will store them nicely.

Can someone with some real world knowledge of the subject to comment on this? Instead of these stupid fanboyes.

first of all that two videos aren't that new. only the one with rectangles is newer and shows 3d graphics under linux.
it is only a big step into full working 3d support under linux. so there's no hack for the hv to play games.

You can already play homebrew on the ps3 , SNES emulator through linux works decent and its playable.
This could turn out to be good in the long run

this isnt linux. it doesnt take a genius to realize its directly under hypervisor.

Hmm, now that is some achievement... When to think that I can do the same on my PSP ;)

yea these videos are old, as more and more people are working on this and they are gaining more ground everyday. Also once this is fully unlocked i doubt you would have to have linux installed, someone would likely make a program similar to xbmc to allow media and apps to run from a simple dashboard

Old linux distro software is not homebrew dude !!
Snes9x is an old app and you just have to compile it under the right arch if you wanna get it running.
It is not a ps3 oriented work -> not homebrew... just an old app compiled for a new kind of cpu. (ppu ? spu ? lol)
I do not want to flame but please choose the right word for the right thing, thank you !
And for the rsx access it's good, really good. Hopefully we will have compiz-fusion running on our beloved ps3 at full throttle.
