View Full Version : Ubisoft: We don't know what is causing Assassin's Creed PS3 issues
Ubisoft Spokesperson Michael Beadle has commented that Ubisoft doesn't know what exactly is causing the freezing problems on Assassin's Creed for the PS3. Ubisoft is investigating the matter but noted a drop in complaints from PS3 gamers who turned off the automated loging feature of PSN.
We spoke with Michael Beadle, Ubisoft’s senior public-relations manager, about the freezing problems. He says Ubisoft is investigating the matter and is not exactly sure what’s causing the glitches. The company noted a drop in complaints once PS3 gamers noticed that turning off the automated login feature on the PlayStation Network, or PSN, reduced the number of crashes. We tried this, but the game still crashed. Ubisoft is working on a patch for the problems using feedback from gamers and blogs, Beadle says.

If they don't know the problem, maybe they can't replicate it, therefore they didn't know of the issues before releasing the game. I am sure they have debuggers that can test step by step any line of code, but on the other hand, this is sony sdk :o.
Score another bad one for PS3 users :(

See we here at ubisoft love our gamers so much. We give you rootkits and games that don't work and we cannot even bugfix our own products.
P.S Buy our game now on ps3 its really great and its on shelf now. :p
Did i translate that right? Those people with errors should return the game or call for a recall.

The problem does seem infrequent so it could be hard to pinpoint. Also, I can't help feeling that recent FW updates (hello message bar) could easily upset game code with their nature.
I've never had a problem since patch (1 freeze before) and know many who have had zero problems.
I don't feel this was shoved out with knowledge of bugs (yes, I'm looking at you PES) and with such an erratic problem it could be tough to pin down. Look at how long some PC patches take due to the amount of changable variables that can affect each PC trying to run the game.
Console's ain't PCs, but when they have background processes, maybe different FW versions and different features than could be active/inactive they are getting closer to the PC scenario, which is good in some ways but bad for ensuring 100% compatibility.

Well, on my 60 gb system, when my HD have more than 40gb of content, not only ACreed freezes, but other games like warhawk and resistance freezes too. When this happens i have to delete some content from the HD and it solves the problem without having to put the "auto login" option disable. The trick is to never go beyond the 40 gb, and i think that this is the problem thats is happening to all the people experiencing this problem.

Interesting that they dont know what it is...
Especially looking at how i reported exactly the same issue with Enchanted. Arms months ago, which has yet to be resolved tbh.
I work for a different game company btw and i believe their "not known" issue has to do with a memory leak caused by the programming of the game.
Which would explain why the freezes occur more often while using the PSN at the same time as playing (especially increased freeze chance with a download being active in the background)

Ehh Wrong! Try SNES, for Donkey Kong, or anything Mario. Hell, n64 was king of the platformer market.

If I'd have to make a conclusion, I would say guys at Ubisoft developed with a SKD that had an old frmw version in it. But what Sony has been doing lately is to change the way PS3 games run on the console with many frmw, you see this as "Improved compatibility with PlayStation3 titles" in the list of improvements.
So, basically, I think Sony is driving developers mad
But I gotta say I'm sticking with Sony in this gen, maybe not the next, we'll see

new firmwares are always downwards compatible with older titles or you would run into a HUGE issue after a while.
Like i mentioned above this is NOT the first title by Ubisoft that has freeze issues. And the freeze issue does also still exist in the 360 version for the older title i mentioned as well as AC. Which leads me back to my assumption that the freezes are a result of a memory leak issue caused by how they coded the game. Memory Leak based freeze issues are so random that it might not happen to all customers or even never to some (if you are lucky).

well i added to a previous thread about the patch and it seemed to be the ticker and messeneger enabled on ps3s that caused the lag, try disabling them people that have problems...

I'm always signed into PSN while playing the game and it runs fine, I'm on the last assassination now and have had 1 crash so far. The only things I have disabled is the info bar and media servers. Anyone with problems maybe try disabling them if you haven't already

Hey you pay for a lot of things that have bugs, that goes from pencils all the way to cars, so that it's "free" has nothing to do with this. Blame the devs, blame the sdk, blame whatever you like, but the fact that the psn is free has "probably" (You never know) nothing to do with this.
In any case so many people have said to disable the info bar thingy to get rid of these issues, and up to this point I haven't seen anyone saying that this didn't fix their problems, so it seems like as good a lead as any to start looking for answers.

Translation: We did'nt Q & A test the game. OOPS. Instead we elect to Blame Sony's firmware even though the Auto login feature doesnt cause games like COD4 and resistance fall of man and many others to freeze.
No more Games ~Lord Humungus
Stop blaming everybody else and just do it right, Or stop Charging PS3 owners $60 if your going to half ass our copy of the game.

The bottom line is Games Should Work from the moment you buy them. What is with these publishers these days? I have to turn off features of my p3 just so I can play your crappy game. Finish the game completely or don't release it. THis is not fair to us the end users.
this game froze m ps3 so much I had to d a complete format and then I even lost full ps2 upscaling in the process. wtf Ubisoft? thanks for breaking my month and a half old ps3.........

How come a patch been out in Europe 4 days ago ?
Ok, the patch is kicking ps3's framerate in the balls, but yet it seems to solve most of the freeze issues.

I guess you are not a programmer? First of all the tools that are out there can find memory leaks, errors in loops and other simple errors. You also sue code reviews were someone manually read you code to try to find problems. The you do old school testing to try to find other bugs. But you will never find all bugs in a complex problem.
All the tools a stand a lone from Sonys SDK (it still sucks) but you can not blame it for bad code.

Must have something to do with your console. I have a launch 60 GB and I don't have any problems at all.

That is why I think people shouldn't throw a hissyfit everytime a game gets delayed. I rather wait a month and have a game that works well; if not well, at least that works better than a super rushed game.

The crash issues are somewhat random so it has nothing to do with the actual console.
It depends on multiple factors. Playing behavior, what is running in the background (PSN, info bar, downloads) as well as how long you play the game without a break (shutting it down)
Generally i would suggest people with a lot of crash issues to turn off all the background stuff, especially downloads. That should reduce the chance of a crash due to the memory leak.
