View Full Version : Sony on PS3: The first year is important but it's the first of a nine-inning baseball game
Sony's Jack Tretton has shrugged off reports of the PS3's poor start by commenting that while the first year is important, it is just the first inning of a nine-inning baseball game. He states that you will not win many baseball games if you panic when you're 1-0 down after the first inning. Tretton also rubbishes reports that consumers brand Sony to be arrongant by stating that these claims most likely came from bloggers and pressers more than their true consumers.
Sony was charged with being arrogant toward its fans. Would you say that “here it is, plug it in” could be construed as such?
I don’t know that we were ever considered arrogant by consumers. … I think the arrogant claims came from the press and bloggers more than true consumers. … I think the arrogance claim comes with a leadership position and being unwilling to admit that you’re failing. And anybody who’s been through media training or been with the press isn’t going to get on a soapbox and talk about their failures. If that gets construed as arrogance, then I guess that’s a risk you have to take.
So, if next-gen was Internet-connected consoles and high-def, how long do you see this generation lasting?
I think it should last for 10 years. I think we’ve got more technology under the hood and more growth potential in terms of what developers can do with the software than we’ve had in previous generations.
If you summed up the mission statement for PS3, it’s short-term sacrifices for long-term gains. There was clearly an easier route to go, but we think the route we’re taking is the one that’s going to pay dividends for years to come.

If in the fifth inning though, if Nintendo releases a Wii2 more powerful than a PS3.. then Sony's fu**ed in the arse, the 10 year theory is out the window and they would think they should have focused on lowering the costs from the beginning (like remove PS2 compatibility from the beginning if you're going to remove it later) than wasting time coming up with one stupid excuse after another like this baseball analogy...

I don't know what it is about this tretton guy but I would like the PS3 far more if he kept his trap shut. One of the main reasons Sony get the claim to be considered arrogant by consumers is because of people like him Kaz and Ken's comments to the press. Fair enough those comments have become more restrained in the past few months but it was the pre and after release comments that really instilled an air of arrogance in my view.
In my view they should all keep quiet except to say what they are doing software wise and in reference to peripherals and hardware revisions, as when they start spewing blatant spin they seem to do more damage than good. Let the console speak fo it's self like the competition for the most part do. The PS3 has no more negatives than the competition, but the continuous spin which never lives up to the claims just does more harm than it helps.

hmm maybe saying " the next gen doesnt start till ps3 launches" or "people will happily work an extra job to pay for it" or "people will want to buy it even if it had no games" or "rumble is so last generation"
and of course no one wants to forget the classic " its important to note that the ps3 is almost fully backwards compatable with our previous consoles and not just partialy like microsofts".
arrogant, no, of course you arent.
fu*king arrogant bastards, i still dont know which would put people off buying a ps3 more, the sony execs ot the ps3 fanboys, if both had been got rid off the ps3 would have had a much better chance.

yeah right. nintendo will milk the wii and when the fad dies out they will release just another console that is a little bit more powerful than the wii.

The funny thing about analogies is that no matter how dire your state, you can always find an analogy to make your condition appear much better than it is.
Sure this could be a 9 inning game, but sony is down 3:7 after the first inning, and they were lucky to have scored at all because they are unable to get a single hit and all their scores were off walks. They have an overpaid bullpen and not a single one can find the strike zone.

Is it just me or are they saying the same thing over and over again?

Why is this guy Tretton still in a job?
Has he not totally humiliated Sony enough in this campaign? Other Sony suits must have their heads in their hands whenever he opens his mouth.

Game companies only care about sales. If there are not enough consoles out there to sell games then companies will stop making games for the console unless they are paid by Sony to do so. Its useless to argue that a console will suddenly start to succeed in the future its current success that creates the opportunity for future success. Make the console a success now and it will continue to do so. Every year in a console life is important because it takes 1 to 2 years to make a game.

can you even imagine getting involved in a killzone 2 multiplayer with satel, majin and nimbus, it would be like playing a game at a chimps tea party (*apologies to chimps).
i do try but everytime one of them spews more fecal matter it just makes my blood boil, after all the ps3 isnt that bad (or wasnt untill the 40gb) just too expensive for most people.

What are you talking about, you act like Microsoft is the Boston Red Socks and Josh Beckett is piching every inning..
PS3 is at 6 million, 360 is at 13 million.
the score is 2:1 and remember the 360 is a year older atm. PS3 is in infant stage, and should not have been expected to destroy all until it can walk on its own. Once PS3 is on its legs, then the age argument wont matter anymore.
As the difference between a 1 year old and a 2 year old is DRASTIC, but the difference between a 23 year old and a 26 year old isnt quite as drastic.

I'm sorry I just thought that was funny. the ratio is 2:1, not the score. In baseball, if the score is 4 to 8, or 5 to 10, that is not the same as 2 to 1.
same in any sport. in basketball, a score of 80 to 40 is not the same as 2 to 1.

By 2012 and the ps3 will be ancient the xbox 720 and the wii HD will be alot more powerfull. The gap between generations is shrinking only from this statement it appears Sony haven't realised it yet. Nine years. They have had one that leaves eight more. Do they really think we will still be playing on 360, wii and ps3 in 2015. Get Real.

yea but considering the xbox 360 last year at this time with the ps3 and wii out managed to sell 9-10 million consoles and the ps3 in the same amount of time is still at 6 that doesnt sound very impressive considering its a playstation brand product. if i was the ps2 i would be very ashamed of my younger sibling being that bad.

Hey fanboy, I never mentioned the 360? For all you know, I may have been talking about the wii. After all the Wii has been out just as long as the PS3, and you know what, it has been able to outsell the 360. So you cant blame the poor sales on the consoles age, if you do you are in denial.

The Sony PR 's most famous Drag-queen is still helping to damage the already dented Sony's image..
