View Full Version : Sony is making up lost ground, it feels like the proper launch now
Forbes looks at the changing fortunes that Sony is having recently thanks to Stringer's re-shuffle of the organizaton. This has made investors take note with a KBC analyst commenting that Sony is making up lost ground and in around 12 months better titles will turn up and its starting to feel like the proper launch of the PS3 this year.
Sony is 'making up lost ground,' said Hiroshi Kamide, an analyst at KBC Securities.
'Going forward another 12 months or so I'm sure we'll see better titles turning up as well. I wouldn't say Sony's back on form and everything is going to be OK now but it feels like the proper launch (for the PS3) this year,' he said.
Sony put the emphasis on chip power and ultra-realistic graphics for the PS3, but since its release a year ago it has trailed badly behind Nintendo's cheaper, user-friendly Wii machine that aims to appeal to a wider audience.
Analysts said that although the PS3 might not maintain its lead over the Wii in Japan for long, the company should be able to gradually cut its losses in its game division as it sells more consoles and reduces production costs.
'It's certainly a sign that the momentum of the PS3 business is improving,' Macquarie Securities analyst David Gibson said of the recent sales upturn.

I don't think PS3 has no chance of becoming #1.
In fact, I think they have a great chance of becoming number 1.
Maybe not in 2008, but definitely in the future.
I'm a Nintendo guy at heart, and I love their strategy and what their doing with the Wii. And even the new Demo Channel that was released a few days ago makes me love them even more.
However, I think that the gamers of this generation are moving more towards the type of games that we've seen on PS2 and have been expanded on PS3. If Sony plays their cards right, has a steady flow of great games next year, and gets their online network up-stable-and-versatile, I think they'll be really primed for the next holiday season and beyond.
Nintendo's going to do their best to keep the customers they have coming back for more, and I have no doubt that they can and will do it.
I think people, myself included, love to take a break from the conventional controller type games and just try something different. If I want to get some friends involved, the Wii's gonna be the console of choice. (They've also got some killer aps like Metroid Prime, Smash Brothers Brawl, etc.)
360's got some great games, and their Xbox Live system is, hands down, the best in the business right now. But if Sony can even get their system near, or past, the level and versatility of the Live network, I think the 360 will be put into a tough position. Especially now with more developers getting used to the PS3, and others who say that they don't have much more problem programming for the PS3 than the 360.
In my opinion, PS3 has a lot of untapped potential. And if we ever get homebrew running well on that bad boy, watch out.
(I still want XMBC on my 360. :) )
(I'm not putting down any other console, as I have good things to say about all of them. I just thought that since is a PS3 thread, I should say some good things about it.)

What makes a system number one? If and when the ps3 outsells the 360 does that mean all 360 owners will stop playing and developers will stop making games? As long as you like the system(s) that you have then that will always be number one. Enjoy your games, its entertainment, stop focusing on the number of sales.

This is good news for all gamers :D:D:D:D Except for the console fanboys that live to flame.
Now the Sony industry can press the graphics to the limit (like they have done the past 25 yrs), i am personally tired of that but itīs still necesary to get games evolved.
And Nintento can continue to take controlls to the next generation and hopefully we will se a merge of theese two technologyīs

Sorry mio fradelo Italiano!!1
The PS3 is maybe going to be 2nd best 2008 if they work hard stop talking **** and get the games they can pout to us gamers.
2008 is going to be another Wii year as i am sure that Nintendo has a few more tricks up their sleeve and the companies have trouble keeping up so far.
2008 christmas maybe will be PS3īs but probably 2009 will be the PS3 best year and that is all if they keep up the games and keep down the bullshit.

A console is number one when it meets the requirements that you personally have for the console you want.
I for one have been playing since vetrex, vic 20, atari, nes etc.... and i am really tired of the only advancements made in the consoles life cycles the past 25 to 30 yrs have been concetrated on graphics and thatīs why I think that the Wii is the Number one console out there.
PS 3 is probably the No 1 console when it comes to power and graphics but thatīs been done to death, I hope Nintendo wins this battle so the next generation we will have a combination with improved "wii motes" and graphics at the same time.

Ps3 needs to be on top it's obvious from all the quality issues and developer dropouts. I will always love my 360 and still pray for crimson skies 2 but it already has it's good games it is also lacking a japanese market which is important to me.

Starting to look like the ~real~ Lauch?!
Umm yeah ok whatever!
and in Six Months from now S0NY will release yet another SKU this time with a 2Gib HDD and no Wireless (only Two Wired Controlers w/future option of Game Tap latter), needless to say there be no USB (see above!), and Wi-Fi Lulz let's not even go there!
There will still how ever be plenty of Billy-Ray for you, with plenty of Pipe Dreams of MGS 4 & FFXIII in Fanboi's Heads!
The Price?! I'm guessing about $250.00(USD) **AND THATS BEFORE TAX!** so expect it to be more like ca. ~$300.00UUSD)-ish.
Untill this BS ends and we start to have *ONE* version (ok perhaps Two BUT THAT's IT!), of the PS3 with all features locked in ~lets just say Backwards Compatablity for an example~ I wouln't touch this System if it were given to me for free!
There needs to be stablitiy first and formost, don't go off shooting your Mouth off about how great your System will be and the nuter it at Lauch to just shave off what liitle might have remaind!
Secondly WHERE ARE THE GAMES!!
This is soposed to be the ~PLAY-Station~ right?! Or is this the Billy-Ray Play[Movie]-Station?!?
If I wanted Billy-Ray that badly I'd have bought One by now!
There only like what about $400/$500(USD), right now?! and the USD is nearly 1.50(EUR) to the US Dollar right now!
Thing is I don't, I'd rather have the $99.00(USD) Wallmart HDDVD Player 'cause it beats the snot out of Billyray by about $400.00(USD)!
In any case WHEREARE THE F*CKIN GAMES!! Ya know besides the ones with buggy lagy Framerates? 'Cause the Dev's are just to dence to use the all mighty Cell!!
Hell S0NY could only be thankfull to get to the Second Spot, perhaps they may even overtake Nintendo in sales someday.
...But then I trully beleve that Nintendo are keeing the Wii avalibilty artifically low too. Ok las year was One thing.
Anybody stupid enough to spend tha kind of Dosh it'll take to get a Wii is just asking to get taken!!

PS 3 is probably the No 1 console when it comes to power and graphics
Well, I disagree, its GPU pales in comparison to X360's one, while CELL is better for professional tasks than gaming.
Anyway, I don't think that PS3 will come back on top - it may come out 2nd if Micro$oft won't introduce a real consistent fix for the RRoD problem, but it will never topple Wii... Well, maybe it will if Wii's games will continue to contain few marvellous titles and shovels of cr@pware :3

jbondsr that was a great post:)
The only consoles that should be in the top 2 are the 360 and ps3. why?
1.Great online play on both consoles
2.Amazing system software(the 360 dashboard, PS3 XMB)
3.Beautiful graphics in HD
All i see on the wii are the same games that were on the Gamecube. I'm sorry Nintendo but im tired of Mario, Zelda, and Metroid as the system sellers.

Well ps3 or sony going to end it's life soon.
If sony going to become no1 in next 3 year. Likely thay have to sale "nearly every thing" in sony crop.
But in next 3 year. I think nintendo going to make a new console cheaper, faster and more tactics. Force microsoft to make new console too. and make sony unable to get profit form game. And start new console in poor state.

That is some of the most incoherent babble I have ever read. I lost all train of thought you were trying to formulate. First off, why should Nintendo making another console force either Sony or Microsoft to do anything? Nintendo can make another console 3 years from now and just might have to as the hardware is last gen...and as history serves...their system specs belong in the last if not last 2 generations ago. Yeah the Wii is selling and I bought into its enormous hype just like everyone else did. But the fact of the matter is, where are the games? Not the same ol' same ol' Nintendo titles. I want 3rd party games. MH 3 is the ONLY forecast game on the Wii that I want to play and will get my Wii going again...if it makes it to the US that is. But, if it's ported to PSP, my Wii will remain the way it is now...collecting the dust that my 360 and PS3 don't have right now because I use them. Even SMG couldn't hold my attention long enough to play for a few days. I haven't picked it up since. I thought Mario 64 was leagues better than Galaxy. Truth be told. They are really going to have to do a lot more than just sell a cheap console. The games need to be there and right now they just aren't there.

You get the #1 selling system because it will have the best games and more of them, but the shovel ware makers target the #1 selling system for the sheeple that buy it because its the #1 selling system... its a horid cycle lol

I think that's the one that was at that price before, but I could be wrong. Anyways I suggested to a friend to buy this one he asked me about HD movies and the fact that it's 1080i didn't sit well with him. He just bought a new 1080p 46" samsung and said that if he's going to do something, he rather do it right. He went on to give me a little speach and basically said that he doesn't want a crippled player, and that if he wanted 1080i he would have spent over $700 less on his TV. The guy isn't even a gamer and his considering to get a ps3, and the reason why he told me is because he wants me to sweet talk his wife, I'm like the tech consultant for some of my friends, into letting him buy it.

I look at your post, then I look at the rest. It shows that your brain cells are dying because you're still on the "There are no games" arguement. Maybe there's no games that you like *hmm* but I have over 10. None of them have framerate issues (assassins creed is multi, PES is crap and I don't play soccer-football (not american football) games.
Second, why do you want HD-DVD. What made you jump ship from regular DVD? Blu-ray is for those who want it and those who have it aren't complaining.
And your whole Sony releasing another sku point, 360 has what, THREE SKU's while sony has 2 actively produced models. With the 40Gb & 80GB models REPLACING the 20GB & 60GB. The 60GB is considered the best model while the 20GB is legendary. X360 has Arcade, Premium, and Elite. What's your point???
What I'm saying is take your non-sensical babbling bullshit fanboy posts and grow up.

I would rather buy a xbox360 then a wii, and i'm a sony fanboy. The wii is exactly like Halo 3. Both were bought just based on hype. The wii won't last more then 1 more year. The wii has bad hardware and no games. It can't last aganist the ps3 and 360. Althought the xbox has hardware as reliable as a goldfish, it still has good games and a good warranty. The ps3 on the other hand ver reliable hardware but not a good games. Also to anyone that says the ps3 has no good games, you have no say in this because obviously you hate gaming in general to say such a stupid thing.

Maybe Not to play PS2 games, ore only 2 USB?? I don't think he 40gb has more built features. I find it unfair from Sony, the promised you could play PS2 and PSX games on the PS3, but if you buy a 40gb version you can't play them, Sony broke promises they made whit holding back on the backward compatibility on the 40GB version.
that is my opinion, I am happy I have 60gb version, but unhappy I it is EU, the hardware for PS2 games is not in that system, its only software emulation

Hmmm sorry but most ppl I get in the store I work, don't even know that the 40gb version can't play PS2 games, so they didn't really make it clear it seams,
I payt 100 euro more for 60gb version whit 2 games + a 2the controller, if you buy the 40gb + those 2 games and 2the controller you have to pay more,
I both myn to play games myself, but not really any game I like for it right now I use it to play my ps2 games and PSX games, and the most PS3's over here are the 40 gb version, I can't even pre order the 60gb version at my dealer's anymore, so my opinion is that Sony is making the "normal ppl" buy a PS3, that they think they can play PS2 games on it, I always need to point out to the ppl that they can't play them, and then they say, you sure?? I heard the PS3 can play PS2 games. so I don't really see how they made a Good announcement to everybody it properly. I know its on the back off the box, but not allot off ppl read the back off the Box. I am just talking about my own expiations I have had whit ppl buying a PS3, and trying to get 60gb versions to sell.
And I don't use the blue-ray Playback, so I don't need that really, Maby Sony will take that out aswel in next SKU they going to make.
Just trying to say Sony taking stuff out off the PS3, and now the PS3 can't do stuff theme Promised at the first announcements off what the PS3 could do.
it already started whit the EU launch taking out BC Hardware and making software emulator (for the ppl that play PS2 games on PS3), and we hat to pay 600 euro for the first, and in USA it was 600 dollar, 1 dollar is less then Euro, so EU ppl have to pay more and get less in my opinion.

As the local tech shouldn't you inform your friend that as he purchased a proper 80p set that having a 80i source is completely negligible?
I didn't make up his mind in anyway. He wanted his TV (actually it was a sharp not a samsung), and asked for my advice and I limited myself to telling him that for the price it was ok, not a drop everything kinda deal, but good nonetheless. The fact that they ask for my opinion doesn't mean I know all there is to know about this stuff either, and as it is I hear a lot of mixed reports on whether this matters or not (1080p set with a 1080i source), and I'm not going to start explaining something to the guy if I'm not 100% sure what I'm talking about.
Besides I told him that for movies unless he had a bigger screen he wasn't really going to notice much, if any, difference at all. Since he's big on sports, I also told him that there's no broadcasts in 1080p, they're either 720p or 1080i. Unless I'm missing something there, but in any case he didn't really care much for that and told me, and I quote, "stop hating on my crap bro".
As long as I don't see a problem with what they're buying I'll just say what they want to hear "Yeah that's cool". You see most people claim they want your opinion, but what they really want is for you to agree with them, so if he doesn't mind spending the extra $$$, if it won't burn down his house, break on him in 3 months, and it'll make him happy I'll just follow his lead. Even in the scenario that I was all knowing about the differences in 1080i/p the effort of explaining why the difference between sources on a 1080p set vs a 1080i set is "negligible", it would have probably been in vain because he simply didn't want the HD-DVD player.
On the matter of changing skus, I doubt it we'll see another sku. The ps3 is already at the point where it'll get revised hardware, until they can do a ps3 slim or something, and I doubt that will happen in the next 1 - 2 years. I really think they should keep producing a version that has ps2 B/C; even though, in all honesty I think it's true that people don't really use it that much, and as soon as there are more games for the ps3 this will not matter at all. That said every once in a while we get an urge to whoop out our old games for another whirl. Personally I think I beat more SNES/PSX games last year than PS2 ones, so I realize that for some having an extra ps2 laying around, and unplugging their ps3 and reconnecting their ps2s would be a chore. That has as much meaning to me as people saying that switching disc on a 360 (whenever we get to that) is so tedious. True we would rather not do either thing, but it's really not the end of the world when/if we have to.

the 40gb PS3 is the most advanced system out there & has more built features than all of them.

yet more bs about sony.
the only way it resembles a ps3 relaunch (or the original launch) is that after 2 weeks sales dropped back, its gaining absolutely nothing against the wii and little against the faulty 360, the very fact that it cant even outsell a product which everyone knows is faulty should be ringing alarm bells around the globe, but instead we get idiots like this (and of course the sony execs) attemting to feed an ever more cynical public more and more bullshit.
oh yes of course the fanboys will scream with joy at every pronouncement and make bigger and bigger prats of themselves with every thread they reply to.
as to all the games out on ps3 now i agree there are more than there were but can anyone name any of the supposedly "AAA" titles yet released that actualy deserve that rating? is there even one that actualy works properly for everyone right out of the box? i cant recall a single big ps3 game that doesnt need a patch of some kind to address issues.
then of course we get onto the "great" 40gb ps3, yeah its wonderful to have a cut down, nuts chopped off machine as your only choice, ok, it boosted sales for a couple of weeks whilst those who wouldnt pay for the overpriced original, but everyone reports that customers are not aware that its missing stuff, not only are sales falling again but word of mouth (away from the fanboys) is always "get the 60gb", the 60gb will soon be gone, along with the 80gb (and 20gb) so how can anyone with any honesty actualy recommend a 40gb ps3.

Its always the way of the dominant system, that the crapware out numbers the golden classics... :(
You get the #1 selling system because it will have the best games and more of them, but the shovel ware makers target the #1 selling system for the sheeple that buy it because its the #1 selling system... its a horid cycle lol
Frankly, that's the annoying truth. It can get unpleasant with time to hang onto few scarce jewels while standing waist-deep in cr@p...

Good post.
today i went to walmart and had a lady talk to one of the floor people asking why her gamecube system she just bought for her son did not accept nintendo wii discs.
my mouth was wide open in amazement that really made my day. to top that off she was in an angry mood lolol.
if people cant get simple things like that they wont understand differences with ps3's. sony's just confusing everyone.

I agree with your post but the last part, Sony is not confusing everyone we are aware of the differences but the casualgamer mostly isnīt aware and as the history of consoles show the most important demographic for a console is the casualgamer and they are confusing their most important customers and maybe that along with itīs price point at launch has put Sony in the position it is now.

2008 is the Ps3's year.
well if you go by what this guy says its 2009-10 that will be the ps3's year. sad considering the console was released in 2006...

Itīs typical for Sony fanboys to be dreaming like that, sony wonīt have itīs own year untill the end of this console lifecycle if the console survives that long.

It will survive for sure, but won't see the same success like the Ps2, or even Psone.

are you entirely sure its going to survive its full 10 years (till 2016) by 2010 we will already be looking down the barrel of a $250-300 hd wii replacement that outperforms the ps3, assuming that ms carry on there will be an approaching new super hd xbox (probabaly on par with the new nintendo as nintendo now have the funds to create a realy upto date machine) and so sony will have a still expensive 5-6 year old machine thats effectively worst of the bunch.
sales of the wii and 360 will tail off as the new machines approach as will ps3 sales but sony wont have a replacement ready to compete and if they do then the ps3's survival is realy in doubt.

.. (probabaly on par with the new nintendo as nintendo now have the funds to create a realy upto date machine) ...
I don't think nintendo has ever been short in the funds department. Their strategy with the wii isn't anything new; in other words, they always make profits right off the bat on hardware sales. I would go as far as to say that with the crappy gamecube sales they had they managed to make something surprisingly not that distant from sony's ps2 profits, or at the very least not as distant as we would assume.
They built the wii as they did not because they couldn't afford to develop a more powerful machine, but because it would have put the wii's price in 360/ps3 territory which they were smart enough to evade. Now they have a console that is cheaper to make, gives then instant profits, and thanks to the lower entry price (if you can find it on a retail store that is) it sells better than the rest. I may not like the wii for myself, but you gotta admire nintendo; it's quite clear why they've been in the business for as long as they have.
That said if the wii keeps selling well, and does so for the entirety of its life I highly doubt that nintendo is going to change their strategy and develop a console whose price would put it out of the reach of a lot of people. If anything, ms/sony will probably want to change their own strategies to one more similar to nintendo's.

That has the msot probability to happen, when you look at a product that need to sell on mass market. $ony got too cocky thinking a brand made over a decade would be enough to overprice a new hightech product, overlooking the lack of access from the mass market.

I donīt think you will see a new console from Nintendo before 2012, no way they are going to release a new console earlier.
