View Full Version : Rein: Sony is going to have a good Christmas, they got a lot going for them
Epic's Mark Rein has remarked that Sony is for sure to have a great Christmas as they have a lot going on for them at the moment. He remarked the PS3 is a great Blu-ray player and they're going to push that fact hard. Elsewhere Rein commented that the 'Trojan Horse' strategy is not a bad thing and the Xbox 360 follows the same approach in trying to be the heart and soul of the living room.
CN: The 40-gig PS3 has been out in Europe for a little while now, and the numbers shot way up.
MR: Well, good for Sony. When I said they were going to have a good Christmas, I didn't necessarily mean because of our game. They've got a lot going for them right now. It's a great Blu-ray player. They're going to push that really hard.
BS: I got Phil Harrison to admit that the PS2 was not the best DVD player in the past, but the PS3 is a great Blu-ray player.
MR: And a great DVD player, too. They did a really good job on that. It really feels like it was designed for that kind of thing.
CN: They do that multimedia thing...
MR: But it can confuse people.
CN: I think it kind of backfired with the PSP to an extent, because people found out that they could do things besides play games with it, and they're not selling much software on it.
MR: Well, I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. I think if you have a large install base, you have an ability to sell software, and if you have a large enough install base, the publishers will, if they feel they have a big title, they will put the money behind marketing it. I think there's nothing wrong with the Trojan Horse strategy of "let's get this device in the living room, and it can play music and DVDs and high-definition movies." The Xbox 360 does that too.

I love Zeus' choice of words:
Xbox 360 follows the same approach in trying to be the heart and soul of the living room.
"Trying" is certainly the best word to describe it, because god knows PS3 is the one that really excels at that, not the xbot-red-ring-60 piece of junk.

No flaming plz.
Sorry I don't play Bluray on my pS3, I use it to play games :/, + I don't give 20+ euros for a movie that I can get for les then 10euro.
The Games consoles are made for gaming, nothing els, all the rest is just to make ppl buy them.

MR: Wii is an enhancement to the Gamecube. Most of the people who are making games for the Wii are using technology they already had for the Gamecube, so it's not like they have to go license a new engine and learn something new, because they didn't have to do that. It's like... think if you had a really old PC, and you're running Unreal Engine 2 on it and it runs great, and you get a little more graphics power but a little more CPU load, you'll keep using Unreal Engine 2, but you'll be able to deliver a little bit better experience because there's a little more horsepower there. I don't see where people need to go changing.
You hear the Gamebryo guys say, "Well, now we run on the Wii!" Well, you always ran on the Gamecube, so it's not like... anything that runs on the Gamecube also runs on the Wii, so they made an announcement out of nothing, I guess. best part of the article

Why not make things easier and just release a Wiimote type peripheral for the Gamecube like they intended?
To get $250 for that peripheral, that's why.
On Topic though... MR is right, if VGChartz are right with current sales numbers, the PS3 just outsold the XBox360 Worldwide. Yeah, maybe by just 410+ units.. but that is still considered outsold. All those people claimed was doomed to failure just got proven wrong.

Oh they're playing the games, they're just not paying for them

Mark Rein is awesome.
Part of that article was bothering me, the stupid interviewer was attacking Mark for the user created content..
That just seemed fanboyish to me. A cheap shot to try and make Live not look bad on this particular subject.
Just very unessary by the reviewer IMO.

pretty funny comments about the wii considering his own latest unreal engine has been licensed by a developer for the wii.

So if a guy isn't impressed with a console he isn't allowed to sell his software to developers to make money?
Look at what you just wrote...

i know what i wrote. its just funny that he bashes the wii and says that devs will just use the old engines the same ones used on the gamecube to keep making games. he even referenced the unreal 2 engine.

so knowing what he knows he still says this. its just kind of funny. especially if he likes money. devs paying for the new unreal engine would bring more in if they used it for the wii. yet he says they should stick with the older engine. you would think he would want to make more money rather than destroy bridges before they are formed.

i thought that sony was pushing ps3 as a game console first and foremost, but oh well.
and
MR: And a great DVD player, too. They did a really good job on that. It really feels like it was designed for that kind of thing.
Again, i'd much rather hear about ps3 games' capabilities instead of how good br/dvd player it is, and how it was designed to do such things

This is getting ridiculous I wonder what are they paying mr.Rein to praise the ps3 so much. People from Epic keep saying that PC is their primary platform and yet he won't shut up about how great ps3 is and what a good job sony does, well buddy how about you praise your "primary platform" more and consoles less? Nothing wrong with Trojan Horse strategy? I think its a rip off and an insult to the customers who want their console for nothing more than playing games.

I'm not sure how they are getting ripped off. Does the Wii claim to be next-gen graphics and sound? No. They just claim to be fun.
I feel the Wii has totally delivered, at least with its good games. Wii Sports, Metroid 3, and RE4 have totally delivered, IMO. They never promised me HD graphics, and I never expected them. What I have gotten are games that are more fun to play than most other games.
I find it interesting that in this same thread, there are people saying "I only use the PS3 for games. I wouldn't pay 20 for a movie when I can get it for 10.." yet another says "Wii is a ripoff [because it doesn't do HD]"..
I like how standard-def movies are totally acceptable, perhaps even preferred. But standard-def games? Even if they're really good? OH NO we cannot accept those.. And that doesn't even touch on the fact that Wii games are cheaper.

nice post. people have double standards. your right nintendo said that high def tv's weren't in enough households yet so they wouldn't focus on hd with the wii. there statement was correct yet people complain about it, something nintendo said the wii wouldn't do, yet its what everyone complains about it. i think its the fact that alot of people don't want the wii to do well so they makes comments about how it sucks.
my opinion is if a game is good you play it regardless. i don't care if its on PS2, PS3, 360, PC, or older consoles dating back to even the nes. i still play old games that are fun. i can have fun playing an adventure game, or a fps, or even a game like tetris. it doesn't matter if its fun to me and i personally enjoy the experience. i don't see how gamers pick one console and bash the othes. its my goal every console generation to own all of them.

There are things I like about all 3 of my consoles but frankly I really think Nintendo is the only one that really gets the average consumer. Sony and MS are both very forward thinking but sometimes I wonder if they are too far forward? Even fans talk about how 3-4 years from now this and that will make whatever bell and whistle an absolute necessity, but 3-4 years from now the tech will be that much more advanced and at the relatively low price point who is to say nintendo doesnt release the Wii2 and trump both of the others...sure Sony and MS could both release their next consoles as well but they have already painted themselves into a corner where they will have to make yet another costly tech leap.
