View Full Version : Evidence to suggest Wii demand is being played by Nintendo

A few short posts ago, we reported on a story by 'thisislondon' which is part of the Part of the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, Evening Standard & Metro Media Group that said that families were paying up to £500 for the Wii. To our suprise we also found the exact same article posted by The Sun who are part of the News Group Newspapers Limited. Word for word the story was exactly the same (with a different title) which suggests that someone has been distributing a press release on the matter, could that someone be Nintendo? Perhaps...

Exactly why im not getting one yet i aint paying £500 for a £179 package..At the end of the day ninty are to blame ramp up production you tight arse bastards.Nintendo are to blame by not suppling enough goods to fill the demand thus artificially inflating the price of the trickle that is available..Ninty was meant to be shifting production to a plant in china to try to meet the demand once again they drag thier heels..

I think it is irrelevant of who posted/planted what. All I can go by is my eyes. Every store around me doesn't have Wii's available, and when they do receive them, they are in horribly small numbers. If Nintendo is trying to create hype, they are only shooting themselves in the foot. They should of opened more manufacturing centers and tried to flood the market with units. The demand was already there. This xmas was a great opportunity to blow away the ps3 and 360 with units. This would also entice more software development by third parties. I do think it's silly to pay so much for a Wii when the same money could buy a Wii and a 360/PS3. I know parents try to do things for their kids, but a little common sense goes a long way. A good life lesson for children is teaching patience and the value of money. Even if a family wouldn't want another system, $500 dollars can buy a Wii and quite a few games and accessories. I didn't mind spending a reasonable amount of time waiting for my game systems in line, but I see my personal time as valuable too. People that were waiting in line days before black-friday were just nuts. Have a little dignity.

I wouldn't be suprised if it's all BS, I haven't met anyone who isn't already bored of the Wii ... I sold mine at a loss on ebay a few months back, I guess there was no shortage then.

Here is a surprise: Wii Sports and Wii Play aren't the only gaes for the Wii. Ad it isn't just minigame collections either. Wii games re jus much less hyped than the other consoles, so the really good games might be a little under the radar.

These are 2 massive newspapers that go to print at the same time. Nobody has chance to steal an article VERBATIM word for word. Journo's might get a whiff of the same story and bash out a cobbled together article bit to have the same words on a publication is practically unheard of. It's not like the internet where you can quickly copy/paste breaking news onto your site. If you waited to see what your competitors had story wise before going to print you'd never get your paper on the stands.
If an article is reproduced in this way (and I haven't read it to verify) then it's obviously a press release.
The Wii has been out for a year now and if they can't keep up with production I'm afraid something is amiss.

Problem is the MUGS are paying the prices :-(

If you cant get hold of 1 then get your kids something decent for the money or get you kids LOADS of toys for the money, im sure they wont be dissapointed at not getting a wii.

Its unfortunate but true if crazy people pay crazy prices nothings gonna change. Look at celebs, they pay £500 for a bag which was made in china for £5 ;-)

The wii demans is fake. If you guys are paying 500 euros for the wii, message me and send me 300 euros and i will go to the store and get you a wii and send it to you since they have been sitting on the shelf here collecting dust for months now.

Uhh, the article was probably word-for-word "teh same" because it was probably syndicated from AP or Reuters.

Stop seeing conspiracies where there aren't any. This is terrible reporting. Sheesh.

Nintendo probably have been feeding PR's to the media.

One thing to remember though is that The Sun is a NewsCorp newspaper (It's owned by rupert murdoch, the slime who owns fox) and more than once they've copied stories that have been featured in local newspapers (evening standard/thisislondon, the metro and the Manchester Evening News).

The sun is about the lowest newspaper in the UK (along with the star).

These are 2 massive newspapers that go to print at the same time.
The evening standard/thisislondon is a massive newspaper? It's a local, free newspaper and a trashy website. the sun is a national paper. They aren't even close in size.

again though, I still believe that this is clearly the work of nintendo's marketing agency.

Ummmmmmm.. companies such as Reuters write news stories which others (such as numerous newspapers, channel 4 and Yahoo) all pay for already packaged to save costs. It isn't uncommon.

Complete BS those news...
It is totally normal that news articles in different newspapers are sometimes the same.
There is something called "press/news agency" in the background of nearly every newspaper. The newspapers "buy" their articles sometimes from them, do you think your local newspaper has some reporters in Irak when there is an article about that? No... they simply bought that article from a press angency.

the irony, MC of all people should know its very common to copy paste a story that can sell with a new title, it doesnt mean nintendo is behind it.

Most. Retarded. Newspost. EVAR.

Ever hear of the Associated Press? Reuters? Syndication? I guess not. Considering the unprofessionalism and lack of journalistic integrity around here, of course you wouldn't recognize standard journalistic practices and names. "OMG! Garfield is the exact same in two newspapers today! TOTALY BUSTED! 'Jim Davis is caught red-handed feeding press-releases to the funny papers!'"

How often do you find a news headline that conflicts with the story in a real newspaper? Nearly NEVER. How often do you see this on MaxConsole? Almost daily.

"Nintendo caught red handed feeding media Wii demand stories?" - Headline
"...could that someone be Nintendo?" - Content

I guess they weren't caught red-handed then, ya think?! Way to drum up sensationalism there MaxieC. At least real news outlets don't contradict themselves when they spin news to sensationalize. Even the new headline found in the thread is totally stupid:
"Evidence to suggest Wii demand is being played by Nintendo"
NO! This is evidence to suggest that the story came from a newswire (note: "By ONLINE REPORTER")

Its called a wire service. Almost every newspaper and news program uses them to an extent. The articles are already pre-written so that the only thing needed is a simple cut and paste job. If it does not fit there are guidelines when they are written on which paragraphs can be cut to shorten the article even so the editors don't even have to worry about it.

What is interesting to me is that neither really credits the source of the articles. Which with a little use of Google turns out to be Sean Poulter of the Daily Mail (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/technology/technology.html?in_article_id=496336&in_page_id=1965).

Your accusation lacks motive. Nintendo doesn't make more money when the gray-market price goes up. In fact, they make less because buyers have less to spend on games and accessories and the seller pockets the rest. Also, though the PS2 sold an average of 1.5 million a month throughout its lifetime, Nintendo is selling every one of the 1.8 million a month that they can make. Just like the PS2 had spikes in its demand over the years selling far more in Christmas seasons and at launch, so does the Wii. Once it levels out, 1.8million will be just right.

As for the new plant... they said that they decided against it because demand would drop off. It hasn't yet, but there is clearly a cost/benefit analysis here that they have done and you haven't. Do you have any idea how much it cost to build, maintain, and run a second factory that will not be able to sell as well as the first alone?

thats right, moan about the way this post made it onto the website. not the content of it. its come to the point where i am becoming continually stunned by the idiocy of people. hairs at the back of my neck are standing imagining someone shelling out 500 pounds sterling for a filthy gamecube.

jesus christ.

its a wretched disgrace, simply a DISGRACE. and poor people are starving this xmas. but then again uk is the one nation more morally bankrupt than america. this is a nation where one second you see an add for giving 1 pound a month to abused kids or kids in africa. and then the next second you see one wheer you have to pay 3 to support a fukking dog. (and where according to the law you are punished less for molesting a child than you are if you kick a dog).

im sorry but this is simply a disgrace.

a hideous shameful unfortunate horrible disgrace.

The big N have form for this sort of behaviour in the past and are notoriously underhanded in they way the push sales..... so suspect things from the N to be done to maximise demand and drive up sales..... I mean come on how do you make something more desirable? Simple, tell them they can't have it for any amount of money.......Rarity drives desire.

Also be wary of things you're told by the press anyway as their truth and real truth hold no resemblance to each other to begin with.

It's been obvious for a while that the administrators of Max Console do not like the Wii but, with this news post, they've proven themselves nothing short of idiotic. As was mentioned previously, news stories get picked up by the major "press pools" (AP, Reuters, etc.) and turn up all over the place. Sort of like how this site uses Digg, IGN, and other sites to gather (some say copy) it's news stories. Apparently you should just stick to "borrowing" the news from other places and not try to put your own spin on it because it's now painfully obvious that you have no idea how the REAL media works. It's alarming that your users had to point this out to you. Your bias is transparent. We get it. You don't like the Wii.

It is hilarious, too, that you think a little website like this could really make a difference in discrediting the reputation of the #1 console of this generation. I'm sure once real news sites catch wind of your Digg link they'll be laughing at you just like your users are now.

Pathetic.

I played mine all weekend.. Super Mario Galaxy, Geometry Wars, GH3... All fun! I'm not bored of the Wii at this time.

If you sold it for a loss that probably means you don't know how to sell stuff.

I HAVE read that book. The only similar practice you could point to was the engineered shortage of specific game titles during the holidays so that parents would just buy another game for their kids' Christmas presents and then buy them the game they wanted all along when it comes back in stock later. This is entirely different in that it has a motive/benefit for Nintendo. Nintendo doesn't benefit when someone buys an XBOX 360, PS3, or PS2 instead even if thye make their eventual sale anyway. They couldn't even do this with games today if they wanted to due to no longer having a monopoly on the games market and having less vested interest in 3rd party sales unlike back when they took most of the profits for licensed NES games.

This makes me so fucking angry...

Are you all forgetting that MaxConsole put out a DIVINEO PRESS RELEASE stating they had the cheapest OVERPRICED Wii out of all the competitors. DIVINEO OWN MAXCONSOLE... and MAXCONSOLE have the cheek to put this **** on their front page and pretend like Nintendo are misleading consumers, when in fact MAXCONSOLE did the same thing just a few days ago.

Has MaxConole never heard of a news wire? Does "Reuters" or "Associated Press" ring a bell? Nearly all news outlets buy their selected articles from a wire service.

How can the Maxconsole "journalists", who operate a web blog, not understand this BASIC journalistic concept?

The daily mail & thisislondon/the evening express are owned by DGMT.

Completely seperate companies.
