View Full Version : HD-DVD group: Few PS3 owners watch movies on consoles, just 13%
Olivier Van Wynendaele from the HD DVD promotion group has slammed reports that millions of PS3 owners are watching movies on their consoles. Wynendaele also commented the vast majority of PS3 owners didn't know their system could play movies and are buying consoles to play games and not to watch movies. However, he also had harsh words for the Xbox 360 by stating that internal research has shown that console owners play a game for around 400 hours but only spend 3 hours watching movies.
"Even among the remaining 40 per cent... 13 per cent are actually using their games console as a player, and the rest are not. People are buying their consoles to play games, not to watch movies."
For further evidence, Van Wynendaele turned to Microsoft's record with the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360:
"The attach rate is less than two digits. So [Microsoft has] sold a lot, but it's an expensive accessory for a games console. It was the cheapest HD DVD player in the market, but still less than 10 per cent of [Xbox 360] games console owners have purchased it."

If only 13% of PS3 owners are playing Blu-Ray movies and blu-ray is beating HD-DVD 2:1 then is that really a good reflection of HD-DVD's performance? And how did they manage to get the 13% figure , from Sony ?, every single PS3 owner ? I think not, they'd need a very huge sample of PS3 owners for any credible result.
Maybe the Blu-Ray:HD-DVD sales ratio has changed since.

Agree I spend more time watching movies than playing games on my PS3, My Dad bought it specifically as a Bluray player.... He doesn't even own a game for it.
This guy is talking out of his A$$
Plus Look at this source, the guy making the statement is the head of a HD-DVD promotion company. If you have ever taken statistics math courses you know it is easy to manipulate numbers to get results that favor your case...
I would say his claims are totally invalid.
Plus the first batch of PS3's shipped with a free Bluray moviethen there was the 5 free bluray offer and now spiderman 3 bluray PS3 package... Dont try and tell me that PS3 owers dont know they can play movies on the PS3...

In fact the Ps3 like dvd player is very difficult to integrate in a home theatre plan, having regard to the design not to versatile in rack mount, I doubt that any person who is passionate in professional home theater thinking about buying, it wreck also aesthetics.

I've been renting Blu-rays from Netflix since the first week I bought my PS3 in March. It's one of the better Blu-ray players out there right now.
And why should we believe the biased viewpoint of someone from the HD-DVD group?

Promotion Groups ALWAYS slam competition Because that their Job description!
It is common sense that all PS3 Owners will be more likly to watch a High Definition Video for Blu Ray over an HD-Dvd Disc as they dont have to go out and drop $500.00 on an HD-DVD Player!
This is a dumb argument

I never use gameing systems to watch movies. Dont wanna put strain on the laser if i dont have to. Id rather just have a dedicated movie player.
by the way the cheap hd-dvd player was at walmart for $99.00 but the upgrade
In a somewhat surprising move, Best Buy and Circuit City have begun offering Toshiba's 1080i HD-A3 HD DVD player for $199 USD, a $100 cut off the original price. lthough Sears announced they would have the player for $169 USD on Black Friday,
is now very affordable and priced fairly. Looks like the hd group is pulling out all the stops this holiday season.

an old friend came by yesterday (who has always hated xbox) who is a big movie buff (400-500 DVD's). he isn't very good with pc's or technology. he is more of a motor guy, but he was excited to tell me he bought a ps3. he definatley knew it was a blu-ray player and talked about how the movies are so much better than DVD (I let him know it will upscale his old ones too, and he was like whats that) but he also made sure to tell me it was just a bonus and he bought it for the games.
so that experiance tells me movie buffs that buy ps3 are buying it for the games but are aware of it's movie capability's. the article seems to be talking about how gamers in general are a bad demographic for selling movies, and that anyone who buys a ps3 for games (ala my friend) will not be watching as many movies. Which may or may not be true. I find my friend is more of a movie person though even if he bought it for games. he has 3 ps2 games for instance, tony hawk, guitar heroes 2, and GTA Vice city. so I have a feeling in his case, he'll be buying more movies than games. I'm not gonna pick any side to this argument, just stating the summary of a conversation i had 2 days ago.
P.S oh yeah, like I mentioned, he hates XBOX (his own words) but told me his roomate had xbox 360 and has halo 3, I asked him "oh yeah, so is it any good?" and he said "its the ****, and you know I'm not an xbox guy, but halo 3 is awesome". so that's my experiance with a good friend who is a sony fan.

Who are you to decide ? Wich studies did you pull out of nowhere ( i had another word in mind) . I invested in the ps3 precisely with the prospect of blue-ray movies and games .
Its basically the same crap displayed ... main differences will be the durability of the ps3 and the looks .
Duh... oh course one would hope a 2000$ player would be more resistant than a 400$ console ....
As for looks , well its a matter of taste . I dont see anything jarring about my ps3 standing in the living room among my Pioneer Elite PRO-940HD 42" plasma tv , my Denon AVR-4306 av receiver and the Emotiva MPS-1 amplifier, my set of RBH Sound Signature Series speaker and a RBH Sound 1010-SEP subwoofer ... or is it too children's room for your taste and not "pro hifi" enough ?

This guy has no idea how many people use the PS3 as a Blu-ray player or not, He CAN'T nobodie knows this information, unless Sony were to put trackers on the system, which is not the case.
This whole thread is pointless, and laughable that HDDVD fanboys take this as the end of blu-ray.
Since PS3 Blu-ray outsold HDDVD movies 2:1. Now they embarass themselves by trying to say PS3 isnt selling the movies. So Blu-rays expensive Standalone players are whos beating you? LOL. HDDVD makes themselves look weaker with this whole statement.
Toshiba is so desperate they are giving away the technology. Im still laughing that they had to Cut 7.1 Audio out of Transformers, way to show off inferior technology. Before its even standardised.. The future, if controlled by HDDVD is just like DVD9 "no space"... So lets take one format, that isnt good enough, and replace it with another format, that still isnt good enough. Just because we want to be cheap on the Player, which price would come down on anyway.
Wow the cheap ass consumer sure knows there stuff.. NOT.

Just wanted to make a stupid point. As of not too long ago (a few weeks maybe). Blu-ray total disk sales in the US were just under 2 million. If I remember right it was 1.9 million total. Last time I heard the PS3 sales were just over two million. That means that there have been more PS3's sold then Blu-ray disks. Plus how many stand alone players are out there? For every person who has purchased 5 disks there has to be at least 4 people who did not purchase any.
I have no idea where the statistics came from but its very possible that it is correct.

Gotta admit its funny to see ps3 owners try and hide behind ps2 sales to cover up why the ps3 is a flop.
As far as market share goes the ps3 sucks at around 17% (life support range).

Same could be said about sony and the ps3 :) The ps3 has had some steep price cuts over the last 11 month. Could sony be getting nervous as well (they should be since they are loosing 3rd party dev faith).
You dont see microsoft using transformers to sell the xbox 360, but you gotta love sony trying to use spiderman 3 blu-ray since they dont have any good games to combat the xbox 360.

The freebies do not count as a sale. Even if they do count in some of the sale stats, it doesn't matter, because the HD-DVD camp have the same deal going.
On topic:
This guy contradicts himself a lot. He have stated more than one time that the HD-DVD standalone players are outselling the Blu-Ray ones by a large margin, and now he's trying to tell us that just 13% of the ps3 owners care to buy Blu-Ray movies. So according to these two statements the HD-DVD movie sales should outsell Blu-Ray by a large margin, because less people own Blu-Ray players, and 87% of the ps3 owners choose to not use the player.
But that's not the case, Blu-Ray are outselling HD-DVD by nearly 2-1 (http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSN2352882020071024) in the US and about the same in the rest of the world. So unless every Blu-Ray owner have rebought their whole DVD collection in Blu-Ray format, hes comments are just pure crap talk.

oh dear, so few words, so many mistakes.
1) yes i've been paying attention to the ps2 sales figures in fact i've contributed to them 7 times now like many people who have a big collection of ps2 games they want to continue to play.
2) i doubt any last gen systems were sold by m$ or nintendo because they have moved on to the current generation, in nintendos case ther last gen owners can play all their previous gen games and xbox 360 owners can play many of the more popular last gen titles, wheras sony has to keep selling the ps2 because the ps3 has failed to sell as hoped and now that the ps3 offers no backwards compatability at all previous ps2 owners have no reason at all to stay with sony in fact since most ps2's were sold to more casual gamers its more than likely that ps2 owners who do upgrade are more likely to go to the wii.
3) you are correct that the ps3 is here to stay as is blu-ray however i doubt the ps3 will enjoy anything like the lifespan of the ps2 let alone a 10 year lifespan but blu-ray will survive as a format for ps3 games just like umd is the format for psp games however with the recent price drops on hd-dvd players and the slowly increasing take up of hdtv's its likely that most people who do decide to get an hd player will opt for hd-dvd.

Exactly... game systems should offer games, not movies. ps3 is the number 1 blu ray player in sales but its the #3 console in the gaming market. It just seems funny that sony would use a movie to help sell the ps3, could it be sony is more worried about the format war and not the gaming console war?

Both are very serious issues for sony, no doubt. Losing either of them is not an option. Yet still there are many markets out there apart from the us. If it's bad for the toshiba format in the u.s., it's worse in europe and it's almost dead in asia. It just looks pretty desperate for toshiba in the hd format war. If you chose to forget that dvd still dominates the sales. As long as hd tv's are not the ruling display format, both could still loose.

this is one reason why sony said the price of their standalone blu-ray players will not ever go lower than $399, if they are cheaper than the ps3, then that will also cut into ps3 sales. sony is living off the monies that the ps2 is making, that's why they decided to keep making it.
microsoft wanted to get rid of the original xbox to force buyers only one option, the new generation, that way the old version can't cut into new sales.
i haven't purchased one blu-ray title yet, i only have talladega nights that came with my ps3, i don't intend on purchasing any hd titles any time soon.

This guy can go suck a d-ck! He's just trying to build publicity around himself, but in reality is just making himself look stupid. Every PS3 owner I know loves HD altogether (movies and games) and will never be going back. I recently finished watching the Spiderman Trilogy and thought part 3 looked really well in HD.
Suck a d-ck b-tch!

I thought it was already reported earlyer, that not many people know about the media funcionality in their consoles.

Who even cares about anything these guys say.
There are no games on hd-dvd so what does it matter.
Sounds like they are talking BS anyway just like the other the other camp
who unfortunately have a FEW games going on their media.
DVD still rules and will for a long, long time yet.
They should be more concerned with getting more HDTVs into peoples homes than worrying about the battle of Media for the HDTVs.
They are likely to sell more films that way than worrying about consoles.

For one, this article is a bunch of horseshyt. I mean come'on, everyone knows it plays Movies. Or at least the majority does. I think most people bought their machine from say Bestbuy Target, or Wally World. All the sales people there will use the "It plays movies" pitch to sell it. And it even explicitly says on the box it plays DVD movies.
Also to Video Game Boy, if PS3 is a piece of plastic, that makes XBOX360 a piece of shytty paper. Come'on 10 xbox360s a day on average per UPS depot? That's not good at all. PS3's fail rate is like what? 0.02%.
HD-DVD cut their price too because they weren't getting enough disc sales. It's a pretty common sales strategy. Lower price = more sales (usually). But doesn't the A3 only output 1080i? and not 1080p? So a 1080p HD-DVD Player would probably cost at least double the price. Also remember why they're lowering prices on this one. There's a new HD-DVD format coming out (triple layer discs) and they aren't backward compatible. Oh but what's this? Blu-Ray 100GB discs are backwards compatible and most likely the 200GB Blu-ray discs will be too.
Oh and to add fuel to the 360vsPS3 convos. Microsoft will probably drop 360 in a year or two and come out with their 720 right? lol Because they can't fit all the HD material into the games anymore on a simple 9GB DVD. Gotta have that built-in HD-DVD player sometime.

Really. I thought we were just going to have fat hard drives and only downloadable content next time round.
I guess if you want you can keep your blue shaded glasses on and see
a slow and expensive optical disc future.
But I dont.
