View Full Version : Pro Evolution Soccer on PS3 locks online play to registered user
Something which many of us missed from Gamespot's review on PES 2008 for the PS3 is that the online registration process locks your copy of the game to your Konami account. So therefore, if you ever wish to sell your copy of the game, then the buyer will have to have your registration details in order to go online.
It's also worth noting the online registration process, which locks your copy of the game to your Konami account for online play. This means that if you ever want to sell your copy of the game, the next person will be unable to play online unless he or she has your registration details.

Does it do the same on the 360? I haven't played over live yet so I don't know, but if it doesn't lock it on the 360 then it DOES make it seem like it's because of sony.

do you ever played any pc online game?
most of them require yor mail details, if you wanna sell your account you have to provide those details in most chases.
Anyway, selling one online account breaks the eula of most games.

Isn't that part of the appeal of console gaming over pc gaming? Being able to just plug and play.

I could understand them doing something like this on the 360 (since pirating is a factor), but why the hell would they do this for the PS3 version?
Does it provide ANY benefit to anyone?

How the **** does it do that, do they use a serial code system or something ?

Thats a bit tough. I imagine it will be a grind for some people who have inadvertently brought a returned to shop copy. Lets face it, it's such a pile of shite there are going to be a LOT of them.
Could it be a move from sony so theyer attach rate gets higher ;)........:D

Sounds like it's because of Konami to me. It would be too expensive to make each disc unique, so they must include some kind of printed code in the box that you have to enter. The code gets locked to your account....thus if you sell the game, and the buyer wants to play online, he would have to use that code, but it would already be locked to your account.
I highly doubt Sony mandates that companies print out a little code and stick it into their game cases and that people enter it online. I think this is Konami trying to protect against piracy on their own initiative.
Anyway, if it's like WoW or other MMORPGs, if you sell the game, you just have to change your billing info. I'm not sure if you can change the account it's associated with or what, though. My guess is that they don't really care about the legitimate used game aftermarket (although maybe they do), but they're mainly trying to stop traditional piracy.

could be attach rate..
in any case, its a horrible move on either companies part whether it be sony or konami. sales will be fine at first, until the general public hears about the fact its gonna be a pain in the ass to sell their copy when they dont want it.
somehow i think this may be sonys part though, anyone else remember the rumour of all ps3 games having this technology?

It's a result of having free online service.

I don't know about that. If it was Konami then the 360 version would be the same. Like I said, I haven't tried my PES2008 online yet so I'm not sure but if it lets me on without having to register or something similar then it's clearly not a Konami thing. Why would they only do it with PS3 games?
The only reason for only doing it with PS3 games I can think of is if Sony asked them. That or Konami hate Sony  ;)

Now that sucks!
For those who were asking, no the XBOX360 version doesn't lock the disk to your live account.
The reason for this "PS3 discrimination" is because Sony hasn't set any coherent online strategy which ensures proper universal and unique account identification with a set of rules for online game deployment.
Both Konami and Sony are to blame.. Konami ought to have thought about their costumers long before choosing this path (I could have said before releasing the game, and anyone who has played it nows why) and Sony should establish the rules to which a game has to obey in order to be PSN enabled, so that things like this would never happen (hint: look @XBL).

On the PS3 the online service is paid for by Konami. On the 360 the service is paid for by the live subscriptions. Its also possible Microsoft just does not allow a company to have registration codes like this.

for once i'll actualy agree with you, this is a konami thing, however .... ;) its worth pointing out that the ps3 and blu-ray movies both have the ability to do exactly this kind of thing within their drm system in fact they can go one better and lock it to 1 machine let alone 1 account, konami just let the cat out of the bag a bit too soon.
welcome to the future of blu-ray.

just a thought but wtf about rental shops, i've just called my local blockbuster and i can rent it so i'm going to rent it tomorrow, fire up the ps3 wifi and register a pes account (the rentals one) so if i pick up a copy later once its fixed i can use it with that account and still have a spare account to sell it with when pes2009 comes out.

I would love to see where you got this information because everything I have read says that the code is in the box. I have not read a thing that says the disks are unique in any way.

From a post on the Playstation forums.... They said it was on the back of a booklet in the case.
EDIT: I guess I should point out that the post on the PS forums was from some one who purchased the game and was asking why they needed to register because the same was not true of the 360 version.

The solution to this is simple and is a killer for the companies, People will just stop buying games if they cannot trade them after playing.
When I was a kid half of the greatest games I played were thanks to my local game trade shop or I would never have been able to afford to buy them.
This sort of thing will backfire spectacularly.

It does make sense what you say [code in a booklet inside the box], we have seen that solution for many many years in PC games. Not that I agree with the solution, in fact I would question the convenience of such in a console game..
What makes one wonder is why PES2008 can play with multiple accounts on a single or multiple XBOX360s while PS3 gets a lockdown to one account. Sure, XBL has a fee which you have to pay to play the game online, but isn't it cheaper than buying various copies of the disk if you want to play it online with different accounts? This scenario is more frequent than any would believe, just picture a common household with 2 brothers.. But then, thank god PSN doesn't have achievements or gamer rankings, otherwise I just couldn't picture how would they share the gamer account..

I'm calling for an International BOYCOTT of Konami products until the launch a patch that releases control to the public. This is the GHEYEST **** I've ever seen:mad::mad::mad:

I can confirm it is on the back of the manual. It makes you wonder if konami are going to offer a buy a code option or are just trying to put a dampner on the second hand games market that they do not profit from.

i didnt say the discs were unique btw
my second post directly underneath made it clear i planned to get a rental and use its code.
the locking of a game or film to an individual player is part of blu-ray's drm just not activated yet, as i said what konami have done is to simply provide a small taste of what is to come.
@Evolution i couldnt agree more, sadly too many people will simply ignore that obvious idea just as they ignore the idea of not buying ea's crap every year untill ea actualy make a decent title thats worth buying (and complete)

The irony of all this is, PES2008 was supposed to be the game that really showed a PS3 supremacy in Europe. There were even early reports on how better the game would be on PS3 thanks to Bluray.
Now the picture unfolds, not only it suffers from slowdowns in a way never seen even on the crappiest EA ports it also redefines the concept of free online play by locking the game to one account. It's still free.. but loses resell value and is likely to cause disputes in households with more than one gamer..
All this ranting about a boycott is just a pinch of salt, next week or even who knows tomorrow everyone will be up and praising MGS4 and how great Konami is.. It's not like there is much choice in PS3 world..
