Master Chief rings the closing bell at NASDAQ, MS up by 1.65%

Microsoft's Major Nelson uploaded some new pictures of Shane Kim, the Bungie crew and Master Chief ringing the closing bell at NASDAQ. After the ceremony Master Chief and MS went out into Times Square for some photos with large NASDAQ signs in the background. Also of interest is that Microsoft went up 1.65% today according to Yahoo Finance. I honestly don't understand the popularity of Master Chief. Halo games range from pretty good to excellent, depending on your tastes and inclinations, but Master Chief as a character is as bland and generic as they come. It's bad enough that his face is always covered, but then he really has no personality either. It's not like Hugo Weaving's face being covered all the time in V for Vendetta, where there was plenty of personality to go around (except for Natalie, as usual)..

I understand where ur coming from, and partially agree. (i was never a holo fan, but I gotta admit all this hype is making it hard to resist).

I didn't think of it before, but I think maybe what ur saying is part of the reason its so popular. with no personality, its harder to hate him. (like the sienfield where gorge never says a word, and his life gets better and better)

I think its easier for ppl to assume the role of master chief, and immerse themselves in the game, as anyone can just place themselves inside the suit.
master chief is essentially whoever you want him to be.

Reset, I'm not upset he rang the bell at all. If that was the only place he popped up, I wouldn't have thought anything of it, but MS seems to be sticking him everywhere.

Grape, I think the lack of personality is fine, Gordon Freeman was exactly the same way. However, when they are promoting HL2, you don't always see Gordon's face (even though he does, in fact, have a face!). You'll just as often see an alien, or one of the Vance's or some other character.

They can do what they want, the game itself is going to be what matters. I'm just wondering what they are thinking...and if they're allowing themselves to get too caught up with the character so much that they might not explore new possibilities.

I dunno I guess im just different from most...I find it pretty darn easy to ignore advertising. It could be worse I guess, they could have Master chief and a platoon of grunts marching in the Macy's parade along with the Sonic balloon :) You wanna talk over saturation try avoiding that damned High School the Musical...my daughters are driving me batty with that stuff...they even managed to tie it into Halo 3 today by showing me a story about how one of the actors went to buy Halo 3 at the midnight launch and nearly caused a riot.

I guess I just mean, that I don't know how it is that Master Chief is somehow considered so amazing and awesome, that he's the sole representative of the game, in real life.

Why not Cortana, some convenant dude, other soliders in uniform, or one of those cute goofy covenant guys?

Starwars conventions don't have just one starwars person walking around, yet I suspect a Halo convention would probably only have Master Chief.

Um, not that I know who walks around such things. This is all speculation.
