During the Sony keynote at TGS, Kaz Hirai talked how many units each of the Playstation platforms have moved. The PS2 has sold over 120 million units, the PSP has sold 26 million units with this figure expected to rise rapidly to 30 million following the launch of the Slim, while Kaz stated that the PS3 has sold anywhere between 5-6 but more skewed towards the 5 end.

so vgcharts and nexgenwars numbers are so wrong

They're both biased, and wrong, yes. But by sales, this means shipments from the warehouses to the stores, about 2 months ago, a sales analyst said that the PS3 had actually sold (to consumers) around 2.5 million consoles. So about now, it'd be around 3 or 3.5 mill and that's being generous since 2.5 mill in 9 months and 1-1.5 in 2.

Well too me this sounds like actual sold to consumer figures as we know many months back that they had shipped 6m units so by now unless they have actually stopped or slowed production they probably have shipped 8-9m or more units.

But this also means that the figures for wii and 360 quoted on these chart websities might actually be lower than real sales by a fair number too.

Yeah, Sony and Microsoft both love to spin their numbers. By 6 Million consoles shipped, that probably just means shipped to the warehouses from factories, since Sony uses consoles shipped as "Consoles shipped" when they're quoting numbers.

sony's sale alway mean sony sale to store (sony's store) not to people
to day's total sale (to people, not store) is about 11M for xbox360 and 11.5M for Wii

even sony can manage to sale ps3 up to 6M by price drop and 7 free movie. it is still a really horrible news for any sony fanboy.

sold between 5-6 million, but more toward the 5 million? he's trying to put an extra million freaking consoles in his statement, that have more than likely not been sold.

sony could just have said they sold 4-5 million, but more toward the 5 million mark, sounds a little better to me and more truthful to the actual numbers.

why not just say we sold 5 M? If you're rounding down you're rounding down.

Are we seriously going to go through this again? nexgenwars is not even biased, they are just plain wrong.

VGchartz is bang on the money!

Recently the sales figures for every console is Japan was released by whatever group covers that and what a shock VGchartz got every single console correct, EVERYONE OFF THEM!

Look through the wii section to find the thread and you will see.

it doesnt sound very trustworthy when the president of Sony himself doesnt know what he actually sold and has to estimate so roughly when companies llike NPD can practically narrow it down to a few thousand off. this is also the first time ive seen any exec from any of the console companies ever give a estimated range sold.

although the reported figures had not been corroborated by any of the big three console manufacturers at the time.

How VG Chartz comes up with its figures

1. Sales figures are determined through two important methods
1. Data Sampling – VG Chartz gathers random data from a sample of the total number of retailers.
2. Shipment information – VG Chartz has contacts with publishers who give their best estimates on number of products shipped.
2. Because the number of retailers selling videogames is quite large, it is possible to attain statistically valid results from a small sample.
3. It then becomes a matter of working backwards by having:
1. The approximate number of retailers.
2. Historical sales figures.
3. Data from sales tracking agencies as reference points in accuracy.
4. There are obvious limiting factors as well – few games have above a 40% attach rate, a game will never sell more than the console user base, publishers do not ship significantly more or less than they expect to be sold

all thought their figures may be farly accurate the are not "bang on the money".

it seems there off by 610,000 for the Xbox 360 according to current news from next-gen.biz (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7224&Itemid=59)

The figure makes for interesting reading. As of June, the platform holder said it had had shipped (not sold) 11.6 million Xbox 360s, but seemingly that batch has now been completely snapped up.

Everyone knows that a comment like 5-6 million is defiantly a juke of the stats though.

Expect your remembering the wrong figures. The 6 million a while ago was PRODUCTION. They had not even sold all of them to stores yet at that point. At the time they also gave a sales figure to stores which was somewhere around 4 to 4.5 million. This was around the time the 60GB model was discontinued so thats why Sony was confident that they had plenty of stock to handle demand for some time to come.

The 360 has not sold 11.6 million consoles, they are close but they aint sold that many, they have broke through the 11 million mark i believe but MS likes to lie ALOT to make them sound better.

And maybe Bang on the money was the wrong thing to say, but they are extremely accurate.

So if the number on Kaz's little stickynote said "PS3 sales: 5.2 million units" how would that be 4-5, closer to 5 instead of 5-6, closer to 5?

I think Kaz is implying it's sold MORE than 5 million units, and thus our other sources are either incorrect, and simply lacking his rosy interpretation.
