View Full Version : Disney boss: Studios not supporting Blu-ray are greedy
The CEO of Disney Iger has branded those movie studios who are not supporting Blu-ray as greedy and shortsighted. He didn't mention any names but he's obviously seething about Paramount and Dreamworks being paid off to exclusively support HD-DVD.
Iger said Blu-ray's eventual victory over rival platform HD DVD is a "no-brainer," given that the former is outselling the latter by 2-to-1.
That, though, didn't stop Viacom's Paramount and DreamWorks from dumping Blu-ray last month in favor of HD DVD.
"Those studios are largely taking easy money, and it will cost them in the future," Iger said Tuesday at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference in New York.
Earlier at the confab, News Corp.'s Rupert Murdoch said that Paramount essentially accepted money from Toshiba to go exclusively HD DVD. He even put a price on the payment: $150 million.
Disney and News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox, along with Sony and MGM, are exclusive to Blu-ray, while Universal is with HD DVD only and Warner Bros. backs both formats.

Supporting anything exclusively is selfish. I hope they both go bankrupt for screwing over the consumer.

Well it does have alot to do with greed but not in the way he suggests...the reason Disney is Blu-Ray exclusive is the same reason why George Lucas initially spurned DVD...copy protection and content control through BD+ that supports their agenda.
Disney/ABC are big in the HDMI arena primarily because of the Broadcast Flag, which is a standard feature of HDMI, they would really prefer that component just go away since it cant be "controlled". What it all boils down to is their notion that if you cant record a show you will buy it, or if you can record it but can only watch it once you wont be able to keep it to watch again so you will buy it. Disney's goal in digital media is to take away fair use from consumers. Just as their philosophy has been in regards to trademarks and copyright, what's Disney's is Disney's whats your's they would prefer to be Disney's too.

Michael Eisner is not the ceo anymore, and i think he has very little influences. I would think Steve jobs has more of an influences then any other.

Dont you all love to copy your own DVD's right now and watch the movie on another device?

Yeah. OR, maybe it means that HD DVD is selling better -> studios get more profit from that -> they are greedy because they support HD DVD to get more profit :O
Nah, just wishful thinking.
But I'd still like to have HD DVD win because it's better for the consumer (lesser protections), but BD is win for data storage. Only if it were a lot cheaper though :p

for cartoons very much so but for digital animation like the incredibles and whatnot is very much needed. Pixar has some great titles that could shine in hd but with the way disney is announcing movies i dont see them coming out for a while

This from the same a-holes that release their back catalog once every 14 years at stupidly high prices 'for a limited time' before sealing them back in 'the vault'? This from the same a-holes that had copyright law, originally designed to encourage innovation and creation, altered to protect their century-old mascot? This from the same a-holes that charge exorbitant sums for children to come play in their parks and give priority and special treatment for those willing to pay more?
Disney has done more to hurt content creation in the past decade than any other company on the planet. They're the Microsoft of the movie industry.

Nail on head mate. This post should be required reading as part of the T&Cs when you join this site.
The idiots who go on about HD-DVD and Blu-Ray really dont have a clue what they are doing. They are basically playing into the hands of the studios and devs who want to control every aspect of our lives with increasingly draconian DRM tools.
We are being DRM'd to death.
They want us to PAY but they dont want us to OWN.
They want us to WATCH but they dont want us to let someone else watch for FREE once we have watched.
They want to know what WE are doing on our hardware but dont want us know what THEY are doing to our hardware to watch us.
Bioshock for me, should have been a watershed moment in PC Gaming. 2K should have been battered into oblivion for their conduct in the whole matter but instead they got away with it. A few people biatch and moan on a few forums, big deal.
Bioshock is just the beginning of a long road, some of which we have been down before with various degrees of mostly failure on the part of the big corporations due to Anti-Trust laws.
All companies ask us to TRUST them but they by their actions prove themselves to not trust US and therefore by default are untrustworthy of our business.
The next gen of video entertainment has absolutely nothing to do with quality, it is merely a biproduct of a bigger picture and that picture is all about CONTROL.
It used to be you bought something and you owned it, you could copy it but you knew that was wrong and you wanted the original anyway.
You buy something now and its yours only as far as the company has allowed it to be yours. So why buy? It plays right into the hands of those who would pirate and steal because they consider you a pirate anyway whether you pay your hard earned or not so why should you bother?
