View Full Version : Wii Zapper a test of mass market gullibility?
A journalist from Future Publishing has claimed that the Wii Zapper from Nintendo is nothing more than a test of mass market gullibility claiming that in actual fact Nintend are taking the 'p**s'. He states that you don't need the peripheral to get your Wii remote and Nunchuk in the 'gun' positon and if you're really that desparate you can just make one yourself with a coat-hanger, tape and white paint. So is this true or a secret Xbox fanboy trying to let rip on the Wii on anything he can find?

Sorry Nintendo, but this is a step too far. The reality is the Wii Zapper is a white plastic frame to hold your Nunchuk and Wii-mote in a gun-shaped formation. And that's all.
We tried simply holding our Wii-mote and Nunchuk in this fashion this morning and you know what? It works fine. We didn't need the frame to assist us. Our hands were up to the job.
It's not out of the question you could construct a similar frame out a coat hanger, a bit of tape and some white paint. In fact, there's plenty of time for you to do a bit of DIY before the Wii games that will benefit a gun are released. We're thinking Ghost Squad and Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, of course.

At least this looks functional. Sure you can hold your Wii mote and numchuck like a gun but to do so for hours on end would eventually hurt. At least with the holder you dont have to physical concentrate on keeping it in position.
It comes with a free game also... so who gives a ****. Either you're going to buy it or your not. Lots of things are gimmicks at the end of the day its up to the consumer. And im pretty sure these will sell like hotcakes...

I would have to say yes to this, and is probably why they are bundling a franchised mini game that who knows if it will be any good with it to sell even more pieces of plastic. If this plastic mount for the wii-mote does happen to come in some sort of RE Chronicles bundle then I will get it, elsewise that bow game better be the next tetris or something because $20 just isn't worth wasting on this thing.

It's a bummer it's not closer to the original design they presented at E3- that was beautiful! I can see why they went with this-- that previous design looked like it had an integrated nunchuck, basically. And who knows where the 2 nunchuck buttons were on that one.
Then again, the whole "perfect controller for FPSs" didn't pan out either (until metroid I guess.. god that's fun to control.)
I'd gladly shell out 50 bucks if they released a zapper similar to that one-- with a "built in" nunchuck and one hell of a nice rumble/kick to it, but I probably won't buy this 20 dollar shell thing.

Man what a drama queen again.
Sure its just a piece of plastic (something similar has been on the market by third party for a while) , but $20 is kind of ok considering it has this game coming with it. Without the game it would prob be a rip off...But millions pay $60 for a Wiimote and nunchuck kit, 50 for a xbox joypad, 50 for a ps3 joypad, the prices for all ACC are going overboard, for ALL consoles. Back then a SNES pad was like a third of the price...

Err, well we all knew that and as far as I am aware - most Nintendo gamers are fine with it too.
It's just a peripheral that comes free with a game for god sakes!

It's $20 for a game and some piece of plastic that holds the wii remote and nunchuk so you don't have to physically hold them in that spot in the picture. I don't see why it's such a bad deal. To hold the nunchuk and wii remote in that position for more than 10 minutes would be a pain. And you probably could make something on your own for a much lower price... and if you can.. then do it.
Just because it's a gun doesn't mean nintendo is going to hold a real gun to your head and make you buy this.

This guy is just so jealous and really it's hard for me to believe he doesn't have a grudge against Nintendo. Yeah it's a piece of plastic, which is bundle for an expected price of 19.99. Ubisoft gave a pointless wheel with a CRAPPY game for what, 49.99?
How is that? I mean which company doesn't sell peripheral that are unneccessary? Got a problem with it, that guy should ***** at the cellphone companies before getting at Nintendo.
Nintendo doesn't force anyone but on the other hand Nintendo gives freebies and i like that. So many freebies throughout the years that Nintendo gives us, i wish every company would do that! And if you don't believe me, just ask me to name a few i will happily do so.

I cant speak for everyone else but for me time is money, holding the two the way its shown in the picture would get really uncomfortable after a while...so your going to need something to stablize it, I'd love to see his coat hanger, tape and white paint solution though  If it takes longer than 15 minutes to build, and more than 20 seconds to break down so they can be used separately again its not worth my time compared to the $20 cost of the "piece of plastic" and mini-game. I think we already know this console generations test of mass market gulliblity anyway...and it was alot more than $20.

Yeah I think what people seem to lose site of is the fact that nintendo's goal is NOT to make the best looking, most feature rich gun attacment out there. They have some upcoming games that would benefit from a gun-like attachment for aiming so they wanted to make a nice, generic, extremely cheap attachment that consumers can get ahold of easily and thus these games don't fall into the niche they did in the past, thus ensuring that more than just a handfull of lightgun games are released for the wii.
In other words they are making the add-on cheap and generic enough so that it falls into the "must have" category like the nunchuck attachment and not the "silly and useless" category like the old super-scope did. It's so cheap that game companies making these types of games can throw it in for free, thus ensuring that even if you don't buy it out-right you'll get one when a good zapper game comes out.
There are certainly better/more realistic attachments out there, but you'll pay 30 bucks or more for them and they don't come with a game. The thing is some of these third-party ones might not work on stranger games in the future as the wii zapper allows access to all buttons and a few of these don't. Again, I think the open design of the wii-zapper is to accomidate not only current "zapper enabled" games, but anything the fuure might throw at us.

OH THE HUMANITY! So thats what Zapper is, another mystery solved.
We tried simply holding our Wii-mote and Nunchuk in this fashion this morning and you know what? It works fine. We didn't need the frame to assist us. Our hands were up to the job.
Know what else is not needed? Chairs! I tried sitting on the floor this morning and you know what? It works fine. Why would you need some artificial construct to sit on if your house has a perfectly flat surface steady enough to support your body weight?
Well you get the idea, don't like it? feel its unnecessary? don't buy it noone is shoving it down your throat.
A real example of mass market gullibility would be sony including blur-ay drive in the ps3, if you want the console you can't escape it, basically "eat it or no Final Fantasy for you".

Is this some sort of make-up test?
It's already obivious the mass market is guilibul, guillicalf even.

Well that is what I thought. Only advantage would be if Nintendo somehow uses the motion sensing data of the nunchuck and the wiimote COMBINED. If they are fixed in the zapper they'd be able to do that, right? Could be more precise, i dunno

sounds more like the kind of thing a ps3 fanboy would say not an xbox fanboy.

I was under impression precise aiming on Wii relies on IR receiver and sensor bar not on motion sensors, not that I know for sure.
