View Full Version : Developer: Mags will go out of business if they diss Wii
The president of Factor 5 who is responsible for the release of Lair on the PS3 has warned that if the Wii was to take over the world, any magazines out there which slightly diss in any way will be forced to change their opinions or face going out of business.
During the Best Selling Games panel at this week's GCDC, developers sounded off on Wii, the role of journalism in games, and the segmentation of gamers due to increased interest in casual gaming.
"Let's say the Wii takes over the world. Just naturally, the traditional magazines -- if they stick to their current position of slightly dissing it -- will simply go out of business," said Julian Eggebrecht, presdient of Factor 5's who is most recently responsible for the release of Lair on PS3.

the average wii game gets a 5-6 out of ten

No magazines or websites have put the wii down that I have read , in fact the other way and mentioned bad controls in the game that do not respond several times but taken that as the norm and not appropriately marked it down in the final score.
But I understand what he is trying to get at as you need reviewers who are a able to look at what others want and not there own tastes and that is becoming ovious with sites like IGN that they are unable too.
super rub a dub got 2.9 on IGN as an example but only cost a few pounds or dollars and all little kids and relatives who have never tried gaming real love it and say it plays well, so surely it should have got higher if not the reviewer on IGN had thought of those people rather than themselves. Sorry about the psn example but its one I could easily explain.
Well the same issue will come up with wii games time and again unless magazines employ staff specifically for the more casual gamer to review.
the average wii game gets a 5-6 out of ten
What you basically just said is "the average wii game gets average-above average scores".
Which... an average (i.e. not "good", but not "bad" either) game should do.

It's a bit strange that this comes from Factor 5, who used to be firmly in the Nintendo camp in the Gamecube days.
It's also kind of rubbish. Magazines will always have the core audience of people who, you know, OWN the console they write about. Many single-format magazines have also always enjoyed a bit of fun at the expense of other formats.
In short, why would people stop buying a PS3 magazine because it disses the Wii?

Its also a bit strange given Factor 5's initial response to the Wii given in a magazine
Factor 5, currently developing Lair for the PS3, deemed the Wii a "GameCube 1.5" in reference to its relatively similar technical specifications, also describing the console's audio ability as "relatively mediocre".

Like Factor 5 has any influence with games like Rogue Squandren and Lair! LOLOL!
BTW: Wii has already taken over the world as it outsold the 360 in less than a year. I am still awaiting much needed competition in the motion controll genre as Nintendo has yet to really serve the hardcore gamer.

IMO Wii isn't all that great. It was fun for the first few months but the novelty has worn off :( I could've wasted 270 euros in a better way :P

You can't write a review in a way you THINK it might attract others but totally pisses you off, that's nearly impossible. If Rub a Dub or whatever is that bad you gotta give it a low rating. You gotta write a review in a personal, subjective way and as a gamer who is interested in buying a game he has to look around the internet for other reviews to get different personal, subjective opinions.

I haven't came across any magazine that I can say "bashes" the Wii. I know the hardware limitations have been discussed in several publications, but nothing that wasn't true. I think Wii games are generally treated fairly, sometimes the graphics ratings are rated harshly. I'm kind of stuck on the graphics issue. It would be nice to compare it exclusively within the Wii's compacity, but the reality is that the system is up against two powerhouses, and therefore needs to be treated as next-gen. Graphics shouldn't be an issue, but the other reality is that graphics is a major part of forwarding consoles. If it wasn't, there wouldn't be a point for upgrading from our PS2, Xboxes, Cubes. Heck, we would still be playing on our Sega Genesis' and Super Nintendos. I really enjoyed my Wii for a month, but like someone mentioned in an earlier post, the novelty has worn off. I am looking forward to Mario Galaxy and Metroid, but I can see myself easily diverted to a 360 game,(or even a PS3 game-currently a longshot), if a good title is out at the time. My kids even have lost interest in the Wii, although we do play bowling once in a blue moon. By the way, despite the different views, I am blown away by Bio-Shock. Any of you Sony Fans really should try it out on a 360. Despite any fanboyism or MS bias, it is an incredible game, very different. Hopefully you might get a port someday.

who cares the Wii is a joke of a console, I bought one a few months back, found one good game (Super Paper Mario) and then it hasn't been touched since. Even the Wii Sports novelty quickly stopped with my younger cousins.
If the rest of this years titles continue to dissapoint then it's getting sold, I'm not making the same mistake I did with the GC.

Wow... What a rather rude comment, almost along the lines of blind bigotry, unfounded in reality, if such a concept can be said to extend to the gaming world...
Very disappointing to see someone who *should* be acting like a professional make such unfounded and ridiculous comments, because of his own dislike for something...

The guy is a retard. No mag will go out of business if they take the piss out of wii. It is called journalistic license. Honesty in reviews is what is needed and if it's the opinion of the reviewer that the wii sucks so be it. Games mags are dying fast anyway gamecube 1.5 won't make the slightest change to the situation.
Wii is a garbage platform with the only decent key titles coming from nintendo.

Ummm, Why is this guy talking like he's a big influence on the gaming industry.
We haven't heard krap from this guy and all the sudden he is talking about putting sex in video games and "don't be dissing the Wii."
Next he will predict that all the web sites that don't give Lair a 100%. Will go out of business and the world will be put into complete apocolypse. LOL:D

It is funny how people bash the wii. But guess what, you are the few hundred out of the 10-11 million who own a nintendo wii. Wii has gone world wide in 8 months, not even a whole year. What the hell does that tell you? The so called limitations of it's hardware has grabbed the attention of every age group and gaming class. And for those people who sold it, this holiday season i feel sorry for you.

I guess I agree with him somewhat. I'm under the impression that nintendo fans are the more emotional of the bunch, and are more likely to take a diss on nintendo personally, so there's probably a lot of them who would stop buying this or that magazine for putting down the wii. However, I don't think there's all that many "real" nintendo fans; it's not like everyone that has a ds or a wii is like that, most people simply find both consoles appropriate for their needs. Hey I play a lot of bejeweled and solitare on my mobile, but that doesn't mean I'm a hardcore fan of either game.

I'm not saying they're the worst or anything, ms and sony fans tend to get..... irrational when they defend they're oh so perfect companies, but nintendo fans get furious. All I'm saying is that while a ms/sony fan is likely to say that your full of it, a nintendo fan is likely to threaten to kill you if you go against their opinion too much.

That the console is selling pretty well. So?
The so called limitations of it's hardware has grabbed the attention of every age group and gaming class.
Well for starters i knew pretty well the limitations of the console itself. I wanted it anyway. The problem is the wiimote itself and it's use by developers. Slow response times, idiotic decisions by devs using wiimote motions instead of button presses and, the most important of all, lack of wiimote calibration. Some people can live with it, i can't. Too bad, there are loads of other games to play, don't care. Move along.
And for those people who sold it, this holiday season i feel sorry for you.
Don't be, i won't miss that voting machine at all. ;)
