View Full Version : NPD U.S. July Figures - Wii outsells ALL, including DS, PS3 almosts beats 360
At long last sales data for the U.S. market have been released by research group NPD for the month of July. The Wii came top with 420,000 units sold, beating the 405k sold by the DS. Unfortunately for Sony, the PS3 failed to outsell the Xbox 360 but it was quite close, just 11k units separate the 170k sold by the Xbox 360 and 159k by the PS3. However, Sony's other platforms put in accomplished performances, with the PS2 selling 220,000 and the PSP 214,000. The top selling title was NCAA Football 08 for the Xbox 360, selling just shy of 400k units. Want to find out how the Nintendo crew have been celebrating their triumphant victory? Hardware sales in particular saw much growth, rising 77.4 percent to $380.8 million. Of that total, console hardware dominated with $286 million in sales (a 140 percent jump), while portable hardware actually dipped one percent.
That said, the DS still fared quite well with 405K units sold. But it was the Wii, not the DS, that took top honors with 425K units. The news is encouraging for Sony as well, as the PS3 finally got over the 100K hump with 159K units sold, hot on the heels of the 360 which sold just 170K. Meanwhile, Sony's other platforms continued to put up respectable numbers – the PS2 sold another 222K and the PSP sold 214K. At the bottom of the list, the old GBA sold 87K units.
On the software side, total sales were up 11 percent to $419.2 million. Console software, as with hardware, made up the bulk of that with $313.2 million (a 15.9 percent bump). Portable software fell 1.5 percent. Year-to-date, software sales are at $3.3 billion, up 22.4 percent over 2006.
The big winner for July was clearly EA Sports' NCAA Football 08, whose total on the 360, PS2 and PS3 combined for 789K unit sales. As expected, Activision's Guitar Hero games and Nintendo's Wii Play, Mario Party 8 and Pokemon Diamond were all well represented too.

Nobody thought it was possible 2 years ago ... We thought that the best case scenario for nintendo was to win the second place ... Do you remember ? :p

so the PS3 went from 98.5k in june to 159k in july. but id still didn't outsell the 360. i figured it would outsell the 360 after a price drop. the wii's numbers at 420k is just amazing though. after this long at it outsold the previous month by almost 40k. and 360 was down almost 30k over the previous month.
pretty interesting stuff.

Are months that the classification is always the same, believes always we will see a passing Ps3, only after a clean cut of the price.

Nintendo will always have competitors. They always have and always will. You don't like Nintendo's systems or games? Then go buy a 360 or PS3. They may not be #1 (for long), but they're not going anywhere.

Doesn't matter as long as there are no interesting games for me ( and the majority of hardcore gamers) .
I don't simply want a console which has 90% games for kiddies.

Ummm, the Xbox360 Has been out a year longer. So It's only natural that the 360 system sales are going to slow down, due to a large amount of people already owning them. These month to month comparisons are inaccurate. If they had released all the systems in the same year and month. Then yes, the comparisons would be more accurate.
However, the WII is still kicking ass. Now only if they'd get more good games out for it.

meh.. look at the total sales then. 360 had almost a year head start, the wii hasn't even been out for a year and caught the 360 in sales.

What the hell are you talking about???
So the 360's sales have slowed down because so many people already own it? But the Wii has caught and over-took the 360 so that means that more people have Nintendo Wii's.
The fact that the 360 has been out a year longer just makes it all that much more pathetic for the 360.

I wonder how the 360 price drops will effect sales next month? Also, I hear that M$ will do a second price drop near to Xmas. Elite @ US$399.99, Preium/Pro @ $299.99, and Core @ US$ 249.99. Once we see the Core come in at the same price as the Wii it will be very interesting. I am getting worried that $ony is getting marginalized and hope they pull out something big to contend with all this. Having a three way dance is GREAT!!!
Later,
Alex
