View Full Version : Pandora's Battery: The resurrection of the deads
Dark_AleX
08-22-2007, 08:43 PM
Yeah, the "Service Mode".
This has been the work of the alliance of a lot of developers externally known as "C+D": Nem, joek, Fanjita, Chris, jim, psp250, ditlew, Skylark, Dark_AleX (Me), mathieulh, tyranid, adrahil and Booster.
The battery lets to downgrade any firmware version (including those that Sony releases in the future), and to unbrick bricked psp's (whatever bricked by software psp, not only the ones bricked by that retard of Serafin), in all current hardware. Of course, we cannot be sure about future hardware, but the Firmware Update game has finally come to the end for all current psp's.
Spread the word: DIGG THIS (http://digg.com/gaming_news/Pandora_s_Battery_Software_to_un_brick_downgrade_E VERY_PSP)
USAGE
- Insert Memory Stick into the PSP
- Remove power cord and insert the JigKick Battery into the PSP.
- A menu appears when the PSP boots. Follow the onscreen information
and instructions.
NOTES AND RESTRICTIONS
- The firmware in the Memory Stick is not a full 1.50, but a minimal
subset. Therefore, not all applications (such as flashers, or
recovery apps) will load.
- Only Memory Stick Pro Duo are compatible. Memory Stick Duo
(e.g. 32MB sticks) are not supported.
- The IDStorage cannot be totally restored, as there is no known way
to regenerate it properly.
- It is strongly RECOMMENDED to make a flash dump of the PSP before
any downgrading operation.
- There might be a BSOD at the end of the downgrade. This is normal,
and happens on the standard downgraders.
- All hardware revisions known at this day are supported.
- This release contains no Sony-copyrighted material. All required
Sony data is generated from the v1.50 update files.

From the readme....
NOTES AND RESTRICTIONS
- The firmware in the Memory Stick is not a full 1.50, but a minimal
subset. Therefore, not all applications (such as flashers, or
recovery apps) will load.
Can custom firmwares be installed once you have downgraded/unbricked then? And if yes, are they fully operational?
That refers to the memory stick recovery firmware (developers could replace some of the files of recovery firmware to exeucte their applications, and we just warn them that the subset of prx's for the recovery firmware is limited). But the one flashed back is a full 1.50, so you can install whatever cfw later.

08-22-2007, 09:29 PM
Great work to all the people involved. Many thanks.
Reading on the noobs website, they had no choice to release it now before the slim psp because of some leak. So they thought about that already and they would have loved it to be that way...but it still don't matter, it's still one awesome job they did.

08-22-2007, 09:32 PM
You do NOT need a bricked PSP! This will work just FINE on a normal PSP that you want to downgrade!
And you don't need a new battery. You can use the one you have, then convert it back. It's just a little tricky to convert it back, because if you plug in a pandora battery while the PSP Is off, it will automatically go into recovery mode. Basically you just need to plug in the wall adapter first, then the pandora battery second, then you can run the program to change it back.
Try it out!

It works on 4 GB. It won't work in +4GB one because of the recovery firmware being 1.50 kernel based... however that's a matter of luck, it actually "could" work with a 8 GB, but not warranty of that.

I hope D_A, n00bz, et all know what they're doing because otherwise this is WAY too important to release now! What if the PSP "slim" batteries and consoles were to launch and be perfectly "jig-able" and yet now Sony has time to block this *hardware* backdoor? I sure hope that they confirmed that the "slim" can't use this before letting the cat out of the bag!
TOTALLY APPRECIATED regardless! You guys are awesome.
msipl has to be actually in same directory as msinst. you have to move it.
P.S: damn, not my day, instead of pressing quote i press edit xD

yes something like , PANIC: Error formating flash0 .
And nand-dump.bin from other PSP backup not works , it say cant found file but file is there.
Try it out!
Is it safe to put the battery in when the PSP is turned on?
And can the Memory Stick be used for copying again?

I would love to hear the technical details of how this worked, if anyone knows them.

yes as you might of known we were using the unbricking kit for the past while and what is released does work. So like everything eventually it will get released, but this is not just a little bump in the scene this is a huge deal.
This team opened up alot of stuff here. It will be interesting on how many people will donate now to them, because some people will use it for their business and they didn't pay a dime but won't donate either.
Yes, we paid for it, a while ago, from whom, well it doesn't matter, but we did finally pay the units off. We didnt know the real story about it, an opportunity was shown and well we took the leap. but even if we took a loss on it, atleast it was an alternative service instead of sending the unit into MFG at paying over $100.00. No regrets since there would of been alot of broken PSP lying around and now look, they got fixed...
Restoring and correcting the IDKeys manually is fun learning curve as well its possible to do it, but again its a learning process.
start the donations since this is the largest scene release.

Technically it means that custom firmwares that boot without using 1.50 kernel before (e.g. using directly 3.XX ipl), can be created, as now executing code at same time as sony is possible.
The only code they can execute before developers now... is apparently read only, they cannot reprogram it, the "pre-ipl", a little program of 1024 bytes, with a mini nand driver and a mini memory stick driver.

Yeah, son of a *****. This vexes me more than anything. I'm really getting tired of leakers trying to impress a few at the expense of the legitimate benefit of thousands.
The PSP Slim will allow PSP Phat batteries to work and it obviously uses Memory Stick PRO DUO's so this, or a variation of this could have maybe given major homebrew hope for the PSP Slim.
With the rate of speed that SONY tries to fix exploits, hope is all but lost now.

The only code they can execute before developers now... is apparently read only, they cannot reprogram it, the "pre-ipl", a little program of 1024 bytes, with a mini nand driver and a mini memory stick driver. So possibly a dev-created custom kernel (highly doubtful). Also, I see potential for a new "recovery" in the IPL that would allow loading of a kernel off the ms0 and execution of homebrew? In other words, brick-proofing your PSP.
Sheer speculation, I am only a power user, not a dev. Obviously.
Another note: I guarantee that unless Sony has already started production of the Slims, they will be changing the method of the JigKick so that a new method is required.
Making a custom IPL, IMO, is the biggest achievement here.
Oh, and are there any potential consequences of not having a full key set?

Although my psp can autostart during put in the battery, however, my memory stick do not flash. also, during making the magic memory stick process, I cannot use mspformat. This is because it said FAT 12 is not supported. Except this problems, can follow the procedure.

Reposted in case anyone has answers.
Apologies, but this topic is going by extremely fast.

Definitely the biggest psp homebrewer news ever... unfortunately maybe Sony will get smart and modify the PSPSlim's battery so this will not work. But either way, they're obviously going to try to implement a new mobo to block out lower FWs so this probably wouldn't have worked either way :(
Hmm... wonder how long before PSP**** tries to take credit for creating this?

yup the battery modifier app has 4 option, 2nd option is the changing of
the battery to normal mode. boot psp with ac plugged in, no battery, insert
mem stick with battery modifier app, insert modified battery then launch the
battery modifier app.

I'd be careful though, and buy a cheap MS Pro Duo.

Lol, I wonder how fast the price of old Lumines will drop... I'm so glad I sold mine right away when the DG came out... I've been very lucky in my purchasing of games... First 2 games I bought were GTA: LCS and Lumines and beat em both and ended up selling them for almost the price I payed new :)

the downgrader of the recovery firmware already has the patch to patch only the key 5.
The recovery firmware itself, despite being 1.50 kernel based, can boot into ta-082+ without any keys patched (not even key 5), because it is patched directly at ipl level.

ok i got the mspformat.exe to work, how do i get the msinst.exe to work?? do what i said about the Run but make sure msinst.exe and the msipl.bin are in the same place
Example: use Run, type cmd, on the black screen type cd c:\ and hit enter, type msinst.exe DriveLetter msipl.bin (space in between these three)

In the readme it said that:
- The firmware in the Memory Stick is not a full 1.50, but a minimal
subset. Therefore, not all applications (such as flashers, or
recovery apps) will load.
Will i be able to go to a cfw after this?
Thanks.

Is it means that I can downgrade to 1.5 directly on TA082/86 MB?
After That, I can upgrade to any custom firmware?
lawl02
08-22-2007, 11:32 PM
I'm a bit confused tho, if you can't run flashers, updates, etc, then how do you get to a cfw? And if you use the memory stick and battery you have now, how can you get them back to normal. I heard its possible on a battery but not sure about the memory stick. If you can do it on the ms, how?
Nick255
08-22-2007, 11:33 PM
Sony could easily prevent downgrading by putting idstorage on masked rom (traditional rom chips that are actually read only). If you can't modify idstorage then you can't run firmware version 1.5.
