View Full Version : Nintendo delays Wii expansion plans - Wii shortages prominent until 2008?
According to Digitimes, Nintendo has delayed its plans to expand production of the Wii console as there is currently a very tight supply of standard components such as IC chips and PCBs. The expansion plan was supposedly to kick off during June and this news implies that shortages of the console are unlikely to be relieved during 2007.
Due to the tight supply of components such as IC chips and PCBs, Nintendo's plans to expand production of its Wii games console, originally set for June, have been delayed, according to Taiwan-based component makers.
With the delay of its plans, any easing of the Wii shortages in the worldwide market is unlikely to be seen in the second half of 2007, said the component makers.
Since Nintendo launched Wii in November 2006, the company has only introduced the games console in select regions such as the US, Japan, Europe and Australia. Worldwide accumulated shipments of Wii totaled 9.27 million units by June 2007, according to sources.

Nintendo is playing a dangerous game if it wants to keep its demand In its console,Personally Nintendo should expand & make more wii's why the demand for them is still there,I think next year (2008)with xbox360 & PS3 price cuts & fantatsic range of games for both these consoles lots of customers will lose interest in the wii & either go for the xbox360 or PS3,especially as the Wii seems to churn out the same old game,Me personally theres only a certain amount of party games you can take.
Ninetndo saying theres a shortage of components is why they havent expanded I smell a bit of BS,I reckon Nint dont want to invest just in case the life cycle of the wii & interest suddenly drops off maybe if demand is still the same into 2008 after this xmas holiday period then they may think then about extra production,This is just my personal opinion But I think thet the demand for the Wii has even taken Nintendo by suprise

nintendo is shipping and selling about 1 million wii's every month. if this continues until the end of 2008 then the wii will have shipped and sold around 26 million wii's. what more do you want? in two years it will have done more than the original xbox did its whole life.
wtf are you serious people still can't find Wii's? Walmart is full of them

Wiis are becoming more available here, i managed to buy 2 yesterday and the guy behind the counter said they had "loads", out of curiousity i checked stocks at argos and they also had 16, the same happened the month before. While this isnt really what i would call readily available, its far better than it was 2 months ago.
Nintendo must be stockpiling them anyway, if they are only just meeting demand now, then how on earth do they expect to sell to the consumer at christmas, even the PS2 which hasnt been in short supply for years sells out at xmas.
If they keep the market keen for the next 3 months and stockpile atleast 3 - 4 million for christmas, they will make an absolute killing.

well it appears that ms isn't real interested in very big price drops and sony well who knows what they will do. but the PS3 will never reach the low prices we see with the previous consoles hitting the $150 or lower mark.
and the Wii is getting more solid games its just taking time. and the wii will drop its price and will be hit lower price points than its competition. it will always have price in its corner.
