A quick glance at Google Trends reveals that there is virtually zero search interest for the Xbox 360 in Japan, while the Wii and PS3 are riding high. However, its not all bad news where searches are concerned, the Xbox 360 comes out in top UK, USA, Sweden, Australia and is pretty much level-pegging with the other consoles in a few other major regions.

What can you see? Xbox 360 is red remember. It is the lowest of all in Japan, and we’re not talking about a tiny difference. Not for any other console or region there is such low demand. Pretty interesting ha! Guess Japanese hate this thing to heart. The other interesting thing I noticed is that United States come at # 8 in ranking for PS3 demand, and does not exceed # 6 for the other two consoles. I didn’t think France, Canada and Spain would be topping the US in video game demand.

It's too bad. The 360 will never be successful in Japan. Guess Microsoft will have to try again with the Xbox 720. Third time's the charm, right?

I'd recommend not even launch a console in Japan, in fact I wouldnt even launch falcon there. The stats have shown the tide is shifting again, japan is all about handhelds now and is rapidly becomming irrelevant in the console world, were starting to see storied japanese franchises sell better overseas. European and American development studios are getting better and better, japan isnt nearly as necessary as it used to be.

The Japanese are xenophobic bigots. We should stop buying one of there game consoles.... oh.. I forgot we don't buy the PS3.

That's a pretty misleading chart. First off, where are the range value? I mean, no numbers for the y axis. I can see that C is way higher than A, but is C equal 15 and A like 3? I generate charts on sites I've built (thanks jfreechart) and it's kind of important to have numbers to add some perspective. I expect more from google.

OK, next, everyone has dropped off big time. No surprise here, instead of searching for console people are actually playing them. So it's unclear how this relates to actual sales.

Finally, I decided to do a little more probing at google's trend page and saw that the search was for "xbox 360". Well, that's not the only thing people put in when searching for a 360. It may have been in the beginning when people needed to differentiate from the original xbox but now "xbox" pretty much means 360 on the internet.

So I tried both xbox and 360 (I think my OR'ing is correct):
http://www.google.com/trends?q=ps3%2Cxbox%7C360%2Cwii&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0
Now this isn't correct either because xbox can refer to two systems and 360 can refer to many other things, but you see the point.

In fact, throw the 360 results out completely and you get a completely different picture (and a must more accurate one in my opinion) than the original post:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=ps3%2Cxbox%2Cwii&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

Of course, most of the latest spike for the xbox are are all about the reliability problems so I'm not sure that's exactly the searching MS is looking for. Wow the Swedish love the 360...or possible recalls.

Anyway, what's the old quote about damn lies and statistics?

Not sure. We should check google trends on that.
