View Full Version : A Tale of eleven broken Xbox 360's

One could be forgiven that the root of this story is a PS3 fanboy with a desire to spread nasty rumors about Xbox. But this is not the case. Justin Lowe is a typical hardcore gamer who owns just about every console known to man, although there is one thing unique about him, he is currently on his TWELTH Xbox 360, due to the fact that the eleven Xbox 360's purchased before this one have indeed broken.

Justin Lowe is your average hardcore gamer. He's fully embraced the HD era, owning both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and loves his Nintendo DS and PSP for gaming on-the-go. He even helps run Aggravated Gamers, an indie gaming podcast. What's special about Justin, though, is he's currently on his twelfth Xbox 360.

"I'm no fanboy," he says, but there's no doubt he's a 360 fan. He purchased his first machine a month after the console launch, but, since then, Justin has not had a working system for longer than a month or two. The list of problems is almost comically large: three red lights of death, two with disc read errors, two dead on arrival, several with random audio and video-related issues and one that actually exploded.

the new saying is: You pay tax's, your 360 will break, and you will die ! Thats life. Is gonna happen. The 360 is a poorly manufactured system. Great games, great graphics but just a poorly manufactured system.

i can't help but believe this is a slight exaggeration. unless he's getting angry and booting them when he loses, i find that a little hard to believe. 1, 2 or even 3, yeah, **** happens, but come on. i guess the new saying is fool me 12 times, shame on me!

i'm still using the same 360 i bought at launch and have never had a single ring of death or disc read error.

If this person actually had 11 xbox's break on him, then the user is obviously doing something wrong. The moron probably put his 360 in front of a heater vent or some **** for that to happen that many times.

Im on my 4th 360. The 1st froze alot but no red lights. The two replacements ms sent me have both fell victim to the three red lights. Im also very shocked that a major lawsuit hasnt arisen also. My broken 360's where all manufactured between dec05 to april 06.

I feel like suing Microsoft for this even tho I still don't own a 360.

How about a totally DIFFERENT person who is up to #9 with total documentation and an appointment with Microsoft in Redmond??? Read more about it HERE (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/508999) and stop trying to play this problem down....

"My story is better than yours because I had 7 break."

"uh uh mine is better I had 8 break", etc and so on.

the thing about it is that M$ refused to do anything about the scratched disks, but they do actually replace your 360 if it gets the RROD, thats probably why they are avoiding legal action, within warrentee (and outside in some cases) they are doing alot to replace problem machines.
Its just a shame that the replacements seem to be no better and break even sooner.

If the customer isn't happy with the situation, then the best thing they can do about it is to not buy the machine (or atleast sell their replacement).
I am tempted to get one myself since i have a HDTV now, just to play Pinata, but i refuse to support a company that continues to sell faulty goods, almost 2 years after the fault became apparent. I am always paranoid about my PS2 laser burning out again (god bless HD loader) but the 360 is so much worse in that sense.

I'm on #3 and only one died, I exchanged my destined to be banned 360 for my current one.

MS needs to do something visible here. The heatsinks should be made "official". They should announce some new components. If this really is a vocal minority, then even a placebo would help calm the nerves of the majority.

I love how MS tries to deflect the importance of releasing a decent product, and says the focus should be on their customer support. Do they realize that most people would prefer to NEVER contact customer support in the first place? Your customer service can be fantastic if it only has to focus on a few hundred calls per month instead of thousands+.

IMO:
product quality > customer service

Well how can you expect him to know that? The 360 doesn't have the clear warnings on acceptable usage, like the Wii. Well, the Japanese Wii.

Maybe he's just had the bad luck of the draw. But I agree with some people in that this guy must be doing something wrong. I have two 360's(not two times in repair, but two units) and I've had no problems with them. And one of them is an original launch 360 to boot.

As long as you have breathing room and don't kick it. It's should work just fine. However I understand that sh*t happens and they break down. But after 12 replacements, I'd become suspicious of how he's keeping it, breathing room and so on.

Actually, the reason these stories are happening is because when your 360 breaks, M$ sends you a refurb. Most of the refurbs are just other 360's the had the RROD. It's like a perpetual cycle.

Well theres a random pic thats been on that blog for a while of where his 360 was/is http://www.1up.com/do/imageDisplay?id=3243874

Maybe his PS3's been smothering it at night!!!

Have a look at the story he's even got a recorded phone message with microsoft relaying to him how many support tickets, i.e. how many points of contact with Microsft and then goes through each one!! It's pretty convincing!

Sweet, finally somebody that can actually show some evidence. With all the bandwagon jumpers on the Xbox forums, that provide no shred of evidence about theirs, I couldn't believe this was true.

Still, this isn't all MS's fault. If you have gone through that many, personal fault is in there somewhere.

Sad thing is people like him try and downplay the problem, and people like you try and play the problem up. I've never had a 360 break on me, at least not hardware wise, yet everyone keeps making a big deal about them breaking. Yes, they break because it's poorly manufactured, Microsoft has recently took huge steps in fixing it, time to move on.

On another note, he must be doing something wrong, because like I've said many times...everyone I know that has a 360 has never had a problem with theirs breaking or overheating except 1 person only having his broken since the first day. One is in Afghanistan and his 360 has yet to overheat even when he doesn't have his Intercooler connected. People like this seriously must not know what they're doing.

Man, these stories just sound like people trying to 1up eachother.

"My story is better than yours because I had 7 break."

"uh uh mine is better I had 8 break", etc and so on.

Precisely why I can't believe some of these claims of people saying they've had some odd 360's break on them.

IMO:
product quality > customer service

I suppose you would since Sony basically doesn't have a customer service, so if you had a broken PS3, you better have another 600 bucks. lol. IMO having both is the best thing you could do...Nintendo at least knows this.

Wow you are "doesn't get it guy / won't believe it guy"....simply amazing! There is even a link to a picture of the area he had his 360 and it was TOTALLY well ventilated. But all you have to spew is

"People like this seriously must not know what they're doing"

when there proof EVERYWHERE! You really are a fan boy aren't you, FFS! On top of that you have just proven you are a hypocrite! One minute you say

"everyone keeps making a big deal about them breaking. Yes, they break because it's poorly manufactured, Microsoft has recently took huge steps in fixing it, time to move on."

and yet you try to sh!t on me for in your words

"people like you try and play the problem up"

when you are DOING NOTHING BUT PLAYING IT DOWN YOURSELF! The hypocrisy is phenomenal with you. There is nothing you have EVER said that is believable; you continue to try and twist the truth and it is so blatantly obvious you do not know a damned thing. I mean come on the guy has documented conversations with MS as well as the guy I linked to and yet you won't admit it?

Why is it you continually to try to avert the problem at hand? I don't get it? Are you an employee of theirs or something? Since anything positive you have to say is in MS's favor? But you so are predictable...we'll just watch and see how you try to twist things around as usual.

So...you still haven't gotten used to the idea of posting and not just trying to bash your way through a point then, huh? Eh, oh well. I guess I am a fan boy and I'm down playing the breaks when I said that the 360 is manufactured like cat **** and that the breakdowns can be bad, but not as bad as some people try to say like the guy who has 12 broken 360s. Yeah, I'm a fan boy alright, I guess that makes sense in an ignorant sort of way. But you did raise a cool fact of using the "Are you an employee of theirs?!?!" remark. I love when people do that.

You mentioned hypocracy earlier, right? Well at your last post, you bring another fun topic; irony. And just so you know, who was the one to start flaming and dragged the thread off topic? 'Nuff said. But, I'm done spamming the topic now, if you respond to me, please keep it on topic. :)

To stay on topic, I'll just quote what I said earlier...the 99/100'ths of my post that had nothing to do with you whatsoever.

well I am happy to report I had one of my 360's break on me over the weekend  not a warranty in site  right? :(

I wasn't too thrilled let me tell you.. it wasnt a hard fix, but it was a fix I should never have had to do in the first place.

I am still waiting on a 3rd party solution for that damn poorly designed GPU heatsink...
